  1. Been meaning to post on here - sad news indeed, a truly talented guy with a fabulous voice, very underrated in the overall scheme of things IMO Don't think anyone has posted this yet - never get tired of it
  2. Wow that is amazing - wonder why though? Surely no point in listing for those prices if it's still a £40 - £50 record
  3. Funny I went to Chicago in 1999 and like you say could have had as many 50 cent copies of Chimes as I could have carried - ended up with only about 4-5. Didn't reckon much to it at the time but has grown on me over the years and I can see why folks like it now - would be interested to hear if it is being played out
  4. That ties in with my recent 'Cheap 45, now expensive' thread where I was asking if current demand and increased prices for certain tunes is down to plays out? I mentioned Oscar Perry 'I got what you need', Maxine Brown 'Let me give you my loving', Chimes 'Beginning of my life' - didn't really get any answers as to whether they are getting played out, where the demand has come from etc
  5. Yeah that's what I meant
  6. Sorry Ted 😆
  7. Whoever sold TSU Toronadoes will be disappointed, gone for more than that on here recently
  8. Ha thanks, yes I did
  9. 😆 yeah not easy at all Mal - I'd go for either of the two male versions I think but hard to choose between them - played JJ more over the years so probably edges it over PJ, but very close - PJ a favourite current spin
  10. Not posted on here for ages so thought I'd list what I played on Sat night - outdoors with the fire pit, few ales, bottle of Redbreast Irish Pot Still 15, couple of smokes and a 2am finish - fantastic night, proper across the board selection. Doesn't look loads of tunes but played some three or four times for maximum enjoyment 😁 Jeff Perry - Love don't come no stronger (Arista, early version) The Chimes - Beginning of my life (Down to Earth) Almeta Lattimore - These memories (Mainstream) Jimmey 'Soul' Clark - (I'll be your champion) I'll be your winner (Soul Hawk) Phillip James - Wide awake in a dream (Soul) Merle Spears - I want to know (Whit) T.N.J's - Don't forget about me (Chess) Sandra Feva - Just to be close to you (Venture) Windy City - We party heavy up in heah (Innovation II) Ola Onabule - Soul Town (Disco Soul Gold) Jeffree - Love Loan (Expansion Special Reserve) Boris Gardiner - More than words can say (Bronco) The Supremes - Up the ladder to the roof (Tamla Motown) Clara Ward - The right direction (MGM) Ray Merrell - Tears of joy (Jay Boy boot) Stanley Woodruff - What took you so long (Juldane) Lou Rawls - You'll never find another love like mine (PIR) Gladys Knight & The Pips - Landlord (Columbia) Robert Parker - I caught you in a lie (Nola) For what it's worth, and IMHO Sandra Feva could and should be a huge main room tune (assuming it isn't already and I've missed it) - any thoughts?
  11. I was meaning more current prices of certain records ie Maxine ‘Loving’ or Oscar Perry ‘Need’ that have seen recent hikes - are they getting played out / are they big current records anywhere? I don’t go to many soul nights so just interested, and any other recent examples
  12. Just playing Chimes ‘Beginning of my life’ (Down to Earth 45) and got me thinking about previously cheap and common records that are currently in demand and rising in price - Chimes suddenly £100 or so, Oscar Perry ‘I got what you need’ £160, Maxine ‘Let me give you my loving’ £120 off the top of my head Just wondered are these tunes being played out at venues, hence the demand and price hike? Any other recent examples?
  13. The B&D Shuffle, a Peterborough / Norfolk thing as I understand it, to the Len Boone tune
  14. Love is under control?
  15. Can you give some examples Kev?
  16. Just been listening to Richard Searling's excellent Mecca podcast from a couple of years ago in which he talks about travelling up to Blackpool with Simon Soussan Interestingly he says 'Simon Soussan made Wigan Casino, sent loads of records over, a lot of them exclusives - created Wigan' I was only 3 or 4 years old around 1974 so obviously have no first hand knowledge, but struck me as interesting that he was so clear about Soussan's involvement, influence, etc. I always assumed SS was just a record dealer type who got lucky with few home made versions or backing tracks but no more than that Was it felt at the time by the general crowd i.e. you lot that Soussan was pulling a lot of strings at Wigan?
  17. Surprised JM hasn't written a book by now, tells a good Youth Club story
  18. Lovely, really enjoyed that
  19. Very interesting that, thanks for sharing - could you just go inside and have a wander round?
  20. Tried to get a copy but sold out really quickly - anyone read and wouldn't mind selling it? Or lending 😀
  21. I never asked that in the first place - look back up the thread. Wonder how that happened?
  22. What year? 1992 or so?
  23. I've had Jazz Cafe tickets from pre covid, now end May this year - really looking forward to seeing him, total class and criminally under recognised Got a flyer from 1988 advertising my band at York Arts Centre with him on the next week, when he was Howlin' Wilf 😄
  24. Great stuff, what an interesting project - I'd love to see a Wigan one
