Have you seen it before Pete? Any idea where from?
-
At the risk of starting the whole 'Wigan footage' thing again, where does the film above come from (assuming it is Wigan?) - This England outtakes? Looks less grainy than that footage and don't remember seeing it before
-
Just to say I love this record - his voice, the strings, the backing vocals, the lyrics, the production - one of my absolute faves I offload records all the time to make room for more, but would never part with this one Sorry, no idea who The Phantom is though!
-
Didn't realise this had been booted - how do you tell?
-
Did Kitch also play George Pepp before Butch?
-
Seem to recall there were quite a few around for c. £50 when it first started to get plays - wish I had bought one Butch had it covered up as Little Beaver around 1991
-
Have always loved to hear Butch out and about - somehow (with no disrespect to other DJ's) always the high point of any night Off the top of my head my personal Butch top plays over the years:- Lonette - Blue Jeans (M-S) Liz Verdi - Think it over and be sure (Columbia) Diane Lewis - You ain't got a chance Jesse James - Love is all right Jean Carter - I wanna know (Decca) Paul Thompson - Special kind of woman (Volt) Jean Wells - With my love and what you've got Just Bros - Go on and laugh Patrinell Staten - Little love affair (Sepia) George Pepp - The feeling is real (Coleman) Timmie Williams - Competition (Mala) Jimmy Bo Horne - Just can't speak (Dade) For me as per above list he has always played a great mix of exclusives (Just Bros, Jean Wells, Diane Lewis, etc) and other known rarities that have become 'Butch' records over time (Patrinell Staten, Paul Thompson, Timmie Williams, etc). Also love the way he sometimes throws in an Al Gardner 'Sweet Baby' or a Joe Hicks 'Don't it make you feel funky' just for the hell of it NB. anyone know much about Diane Lewis c/u? Have heard it on the internet and always seems much slower than Butch played it i.e. must have had it pitched up a few notches

Excellent interview with Butch from Manifesto Issue 25 (Dec 1999) answers a lot of questions - have tried to upload here as a PDF - hope it works. Butch Manifesto Article.pdf

Sandra Wright - Midnight Affair / Wounded Woman (Truth)
Chris Turnbull replied to Chris Turnbull's topic in Record Sales
In fact can't find any evidence that there has even been a lookalike reissue of this! NB. there is one on Ebay at £250, same as mine but M-. 14 days left and 10 watchers - now making me think I have underpriced!! If anyone wants to offer more than £120 feel free!! -
Sandra Wright - Midnight Affair / Wounded Woman (Truth)
Chris Turnbull replied to Chris Turnbull's topic in Record Sales
Thanks for that - I did offer it but he wanted a minter so I thought I'd put it on here instead I have just been asked if it is a 100% original - I certainly thought it was and bought it as an original but how do you tell - anyone know? It looks like one to me - I have had it since the early 1990's when it was first popular and don't remember there being a lookalike reissue around that time. NB. in fact I described it incorrectly as a 'black type' issue but in fact it is like the one on the Youtube clip with red writing on a black oval shape. The runout groove says TTS 01504 STXS-0817-1 SS-01462 -L NIX if that means anything. Help appreciated! -

For me First Taste of Hurt sits alongside a number of other high end crossover items that all seemed to take off around the same time c. 1993/4 i.e. George Hughley 'That's why I cry', Richard Caiton 'I like to get near you', Milton Parker 'Women like it harder', Chuck Cockerham 'Have I got a right', Lashawn Collins 'What you gonna do'. IMO I would trace it back to Rod Dearlove Voices / Canal Tavern, then probably 'across the board' venues like Pitches, plus 100 Club where Mick Smith was playing George Hughley for example. Also Richard Searling was playing FTOH plus numerous others of these on his Sunset Radio show around that time plus at early Cleethorpes w/enders so probably had a hand too Got my FTOH from John Powney in 1994 for £40, which was an unheard of sum from JP - worth every penny though!

Funnily enough have just sold Clay Hunt for the other side 'In the City Square' which I don't remember ever playing - almost wishing I'd kept it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAWsZpCt5AM

Love this thread and would really like to see more of these photos, being too young to have gone to Wigan myself NB. surprised no-one has mentioned Francesco Mellina's Wigan photos which were apparently shown at a do at the Wigan cafe / shopping centre (whatever it is) a few years ago - see link below for a few of them https://www.bbc.co.uk/lancashire/content/image_galleries/russ_gallery.shtml?10 I emailed Francesco about them ages ago and he said he has several hundred, including one of the dance comp / piano like the one here - interestingly he said they were all of the Sept '81 Wigan last night so is that what these are too?? Maybe he remembered it wrong. Said happy to publish them if anyone willing to pay but otherwise they are just in storage - fantastic quality though
