  1. Thanks Arthur - was it big elsewhere at the same time?
  2. Thanks guys - what about when it was first played here - Casino? Who played it? John Anderson find?
  3. Thanks for good info so far folks - much appreciated and v. interesting Anyone help with my other questions? When was it first played here, who did the version with the woman singing along, etc
  4. Larry or L Allen - 'Can't we talk it over' (Green Dolphin) - discuss Banging tune, love it but what a terrible voice really - on a par with Reggie Alexander or Johnny Rodgers - must have been white? Who was Larry Allen? Anyone ever track him down? Did he do anything else? Where was Green Dolphin records - Detroit? Who discovered / played it? Torch? Catacombs? Must be quite a few around - was a box found at some point? Is that weird jump in the instrumental section that throws it completely off the beat a pressing fault? Who did that funny version where a woman sings along with him? Has the same backing track been used elsewhere? How come it came out twice as L. Allen and Larry Allen? Which is more rare? Cheers, Chris.
  5. Love Ronnie Laws - Always There:-
  6. Just played Wilton Felder the other day for the first time in ages, still magical Always loved the sax in this one - really dirty, pitched slightly off key - wonderful
  7. A guy I used to work with put me on to this as a massive Casino spin mid 70's - clearly it was that popular then? Never seems to get much attention now when it has so many of the right ingredients IMO - straight to the point blue-eyed dancer of the highest order - I love it
  8. Another interesting clip From Prestatyn w/ender 2006 I think
  9. International G.T.O's?
  10. Still have it on a tape from the 1991 Yarmouth w/ender when you played it on the radio during your spot with Geoff Whitfield. Loved it ever since
  11. Very sad - remember him really well from Bradford Queens Hall and various other niters around the early 90's - still have a tape he did with some fantastic Stafford era tunes that I hammered at the time - Iris Harvey 'Betrayed', LaBrenda Ben 'Camel Walk', Jimmy Raye 'You must be losing your mind', Leonard Wayne 'That's all I want to do', etc. Used to make me laugh the way he would walk to the dancefloor at normal speed then dance really slowly
  12. I think fantastic in its own right - always need to play again as soon as it's finished "We'll go to Napoli, by cloud so you can see, the world I've created just for you..." wonderful NB. interesting to see both versions used in the recent Nottingham Forest film 'I Believe in Miracles' - Jackson Sisters plays at various points throughout, then Mark Capanni at the end. Didn't think it was that well known - obviously someone had good taste
  13. Also love writer Mark Capanni's blue eyed (original) version on Capitol but I know some people think it's utter shite. There was a thread on here a while back with Ian Dewhirst singing its praises. I've got a warped copy that needs blue tack and a drawing pin to play properly but well worth the effort
  14. Fantastic, thanks Derek - been meaning to do a round up so you have saved me a job Constantly thinking of big hitters that haven't been mentioned - Walter Jackson 'Let me come back', Rita Graham 'My cup runneth over', Linda Jones 'What have I done to make you mad', for example Going back to my original point, in terms of a Top 100 Chart of most played / most loved crossover sounds, what would be No 1? I would probably still say Constellations 'I don't know about you' - any thoughts? Cheers, Chris.
  15. They almost all sound massively pitched up - Phil Orsi, Ron Baxter, Jo An Courcy, Little Stanley, Frank Foster - unless the whole recording runs fast? Great listen though, thanks Chalky
  16. Similarly the Diane Lewis and Ujima tracks I mentioned are much more punchy for being pitched up a bit
  17. A couple that spring to mind for me are old Butch spins Diane Lewis 'you ain't got a chance', and Ujima 'I'm not ready', played somewhat faster by Butch I think than when you hear them normally - Diane Lewis sounds a lot different, and Ujima sluggish in comparison.
  18. Love this one as well. from a couple of years earlier
  19. It isn't a new label, I've been calling it a crossover record since I first heard it 25 years ago - if you were calling it northern soul before that or any other time then good luck to you
  20. Lol even that little list on its own would make a great night
  21. A few more Top 100 contenders for me that I don't think anyone else has mentioned:- Dynells - Call on me / Let me prove that I love you (Atco) Freddie Hughes - I just found out (Janus) Freddie Hughes - I gotta keep my bluff in (Wand) (also love his 'Will you be here' on Janus) Bobby Hutton - Lonely in love (Phillips) L J Reynolds - All I need (Lady) (also his 'Let one hurt do' on Law-Ton) Doris Troy - Face up to the truth (Capitol) Walter Jackson - My one chance to make it (Okeh) J J Barnes - Got to get rid of you (Volt) Paul Thompson - Special kind of woman (Volt) Epsilons - The Echo (Stax) Poor Boy & the Orphans - I know she loves me (Butch's Thang) Cam Cameron - They Say (Capri) Reggie Soul - My world of Ecstacy (Capri) J R Bailey - Love won't wear off (Calla) Rance Allen - I know a man who (Gospel Truth) Ollie Nightingale - I don't know why I love you (Memphis)
  22. Great stuff Ivor, had forgotten this one Didn't know Vibrations, nice tune but too 'modern' to be crossover for me
  23. Was thinking of this one myself - typical of that dreamy, floaty, slightly hippy kind of sound a lot of crossover stuff has. Came home with a bag full from Chicago in the late 90's thinking I'd found some super rarity but as you say only a cheapie That's a really interesting post and I can see where you are coming from
  24. Great stuff Ivor - very Voices of East Harlem
