  1. Sad news - had a great voice. Reminded me of this clip, which doesn't really do him justice but interesting all the same:-
  2. Great thanks, like that a lot. Funny it sounds like such an oldies set, stuffed full of classics but at the time presumably most of them were fairly new on the decks
  3. Fantastic post - anyone be able to post up the track listing? Don't know the first two
  4. Great clip - any idea what it was used for at the time? Love the guy with the Byrds style shades smoking in the middle of the dancefloor
  5. Hi Fred, in case you haven't seen it there's one on here:- https://www.rarenorthernsoul.com/?utm_source=BenchmarkEmail&utm_campaign=Jan_27_2017_Email&utm_medium=email
  6. Hi Pete, Great article on CJ - any idea how the backing track to 'Since there's no doubt' ended up in the UK? Presumably a US recording as the Total Eclipses version says written by J R Bailey and Kenny Williams - did Chris Jackson bring it with him or did Dave Godin licence it? Also how come it ended up a year later on the US Total Eclipses 45? Presumably a Dave Godin connection again judging by the Right-On label? Any other releases on US Right-On? Who had the STND acetate throughout the 70's, and if it is a one-off why isn't it more talked about a la Frank Wilson. Didn't Searling play it late 70's? An old SS article says John Pugh has it now Cheers, Chris.
  7. Fond memories of Sandy Golden as a Searling spin early-mid 90's - sounded amazing at Cleethorpes upstairs in the old modern room
  8. The Exits 'Another sundown in Watts' also on the later solo James Conwell LP on Guiness, but is it the same version? Long time since I've heard the LP
  9. Happy to oblige Another nice one:-
  10. Great choice, love this:-
  11. For all the house heads, Alison Limerick 'Where love lives', pure magic:-
  12. Evening Mate Does it get much better? Not sure it does. Sam knows his music - its a beautiful record. Pete Hi Pete, spot on - doesn't get much better for me
  13. Really sad news - one of my favourite singers too - many happy hours with TT tunes. Love 'The end of the world' (Sundance), the 'Hold On' LP of course, plus many more. Remember when Sam was hammering 'If you got to love somebody' around 1998 I thought it was one of the most soulful records I had ever heard, and still never get tired of it:-
  14. Hi Mick, just for the record it wasn't me that posted it initially, I just copied and commented. James Gadson for me too I think, remember buying it years ago and couldn't believe it was so cheap and apparently unknown. Charles Wright still a classy bit of crossover though and a grower I think. 'Going out of my head' just one of those tunes, love it. I even like Gloria Gaynor's version on the 'I Will Survive' LP but best keep that quiet Gail Wynters a touch of the Cilla's but none the worse for it - can't beat a kitchen sink production. Love GW's shimmering 'You don't have to be in love' on Hickory too - mid tempo magic
  15. Seeing Charles Wright above described as gorgeous reminded me of this one. Vocal side here shades it for me but love the instrumental flip too - Gorgeous George 'Strange Book' (Homark):-
  16. Couldn't help noticing this has the same tune as the excellent James Gadson 'Got to find my baby' (Cream) posted last week by Mick Sway. Interesting not the same backing or words, just the same melody - wonder if the writing credits are the same?
  17. Didn't know this and loved it first play, thanks - just picked one up on discogs for a couple of quid, proper bargain
  18. Hi Martyn, same to you Best appreciated with headphones and a cold beer - first two minutes essential though, set the scene before it all goes off. Not usually a fan of 'rapping' but when she says 'and my heart got in the way of my mind'......
  19. HNY to all - following on from the earlier Laura Lee post, here's my absolute favourite LL track, Since I fell for you (Hot Wax). A bit left field but man what a tune - 10 out of 10 on the old soul-ometer for me
  20. 'Heartaches' a great tune, soulfully sung. Didn't get the wider acclaim his talents deserved.
  21. I love Val Palmer, turn it up loud and it really rocks
  22. Always liked Frank McComb 'Christmas Day' - had a very enjoyable and cold New York Christmas mid 90's and it was playing in the shops. Remember being amazed at the amount of 'Holiday' music you could buy in the US - seems to be a much bigger thing over there. Anyway Frank McComb avoids the potential schmaltz trap with a superb Donny Hathaway style vocal which I make sure gets a spin every Christmas while I'm peeling the spuds:-
  23. Always such a superb selection of tunes - need to try and get up there in 2017 Hard to pick any out but do love Gene Townsel 'I'm walking away', and Johnny Adams 'It's you baby, it's you' - great stuff
  24. Listening again you are right, the Platters is a great version
