  1. Couldn't help noticing this has the same tune as the excellent James Gadson 'Got to find my baby' (Cream) posted last week by Mick Sway. Interesting not the same backing or words, just the same melody - wonder if the writing credits are the same?
  2. Didn't know this and loved it first play, thanks - just picked one up on discogs for a couple of quid, proper bargain
  3. Hi Martyn, same to you Best appreciated with headphones and a cold beer - first two minutes essential though, set the scene before it all goes off. Not usually a fan of 'rapping' but when she says 'and my heart got in the way of my mind'......
  4. HNY to all - following on from the earlier Laura Lee post, here's my absolute favourite LL track, Since I fell for you (Hot Wax). A bit left field but man what a tune - 10 out of 10 on the old soul-ometer for me
  5. 'Heartaches' a great tune, soulfully sung. Didn't get the wider acclaim his talents deserved.
  6. I love Val Palmer, turn it up loud and it really rocks
  7. Always liked Frank McComb 'Christmas Day' - had a very enjoyable and cold New York Christmas mid 90's and it was playing in the shops. Remember being amazed at the amount of 'Holiday' music you could buy in the US - seems to be a much bigger thing over there. Anyway Frank McComb avoids the potential schmaltz trap with a superb Donny Hathaway style vocal which I make sure gets a spin every Christmas while I'm peeling the spuds:-
  8. Always such a superb selection of tunes - need to try and get up there in 2017 Hard to pick any out but do love Gene Townsel 'I'm walking away', and Johnny Adams 'It's you baby, it's you' - great stuff
  9. Listening again you are right, the Platters is a great version
  10. I'm with you there, the best version by some distance IMO and one of my absolute favourite 45's Jimmy Radcliffe a bit rushed, Platters a touch lightweight, but everything about the Walter Jackson version - the pace, the production, the dynamics, his totally unhinged vocal, the way he says 'Baby!' going into the last chorus. The ending alone makes me want to kick chairs over or something
  11. Great stuff, thanks Pete. Interested to see Pip Smith, who we used to go to Bradford QH niters with in the early 90's getting a name check for leading the opposing faction i.e. those in favour of more modern sounds - thinking back I remember him telling me about it
  12. Just come across this on the youtube comments from Dave Ward - interesting about Soul Sam not being popular with the Wigan crowd at the time - if so why was that? "I'm sure this was first played by the Cleethorpes DJ Soul Sam in the UK, who for some reason, lost in the amphetamine mists of time, wasn't popular with us Wigan Casino souls. But, this blows the Velvelettes original off the dance floor, shimmering production, careful vocals and more danceable. A cracking atmospheric dance record."
  13. Amazing it has taken so long for someone to point this out - how did you discover it? Wonder who decided to call it Blue Sharks?
  14. Lol when you said 'obviously I need love by Daybreak' I thought you meant two different records i.e. that one as well
  15. Hi Pete, was this a cover up? Never heard it and can't find it listed
  16. That's funny, sounds just like it to me
  17. Meant to say, loved hearing Ian Levine spin 'Temptation' at the 1998 Mecca revival do at the original Highland Room (now demolished of course) - a real buzz and one of my absolute favourite nights
  18. Here's the Janus release - a solid cover of Steely Dan's 'Dirty Work' - certainly sounds fairly black to me
  19. Sad news, apparently he was homeless. Certainly put out some tunes over the years - love this one:-
