  1. Shocking news. Even when I was new to the scene not too long ago Tony had time to chat and make me laugh. A great bloke and will be sadly missed. RIP Tony.
  2. Talking of soul in Oz, this is a interesting read. https://www.theguardian.com/music/australia-culture-blog/2014/oct/18/northern-soul-down-under-australia
  3. The expression that springs to mind is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. Thinking up an idea can be the easy bit.
  4. Mark Kermode is about to review it on Radio 5 if you can get to a radio
  5. First night bar 2 tickets has sold out so a second night has been added at Wellingborough this morning and half the tickets have already gone.
  6. Wellingborough Castle theatre is showing the film on Thursday October 23rd at 8pm. 80 tickets available which went on sale at 10 am. Just had a look and over half have sold in a few hours. It was only announced last night that they were showing it! Here's the booking link. https://www.thecastle.org.uk/214/Book-Online/1140
  7. Not too fast for this over, er, 40, it's just bloody awful. In my opinin of course.
  8. I must be the only person on the thread who isn't taken by the Sharpees track so I've ordered the other two along with the Valdons which is the best new tune to me I've heard for ages!
  9. That's my vague recollection as well Win. I remember the revolving stud boot being featured on Blue Peter, then a report that someone had hurt themselves and that was it. I wonder if a revolving sole on my brogues would help me spin better.
  10. Air kid went to Wigan and air dad worked down the mines (the iron ore variety) and we live only 65 miles north of London. They didn't mention that, did they?
  11. Sounds like burn out. It can afflict any of us at any time when we pursue our passions relentlessley, even if they start out as an enjoyable addiction. Never say never and a change is a good as a rest and all that jazz......soul...........
  12. I sometimes have to send heavy packages from the UK to the U.S and the cost charged by the main providers (Royal Mail, UPS etc) is quite frankly bordering on extortionate. After a bit of research I found a company that shipped for a third of the cost and with no reduction in quality of service. You may have similar companies in the States, it's worth checking out before going with the 'main players'.
  13. That's not what they are saying on the Fleetwood Mac and ELO forums............
  14. And a cracking do it was too Win. It was on a bank holiday Sunday if I remember right so not really that much on compared to a Saturday night.
  15. In my case it was a small select number that got in for nowt as I don't have many friends.
  16. I did just that! I wanted to mark rather than have a huge celebration when I turned 50 so I wanted a lively soul night local to where I live and as close to my birthday as possible. This happened to be the Cream Cracker Soul club which at the time held it's nights at Rothwell football ground in Northants. I approached the promoter, Kev Such, and he was more than accomodating. I helped raise some money for Kev's charity on the night, my guests (some non soulies) got in for free, everyone was happy. Best of all, if It had been shite I could then have blamed Kev.
  17. I did Salsa classes with a woman I was seeing about 8 years ago. I stopped doing it for two reasons. Firstly then type of latin music they played didn't particularly inspire me to want to dance and secondly, having to dance in unison with someone else was so stifling. If they had played some decent latin/boogaloo tunes and I could have danced on my own it would have been a top night! I don't suppose there is a right way or wrong way of learning to dance but for me (before I could or dared to dance) it was the pull of a tune so powerful that I couldn't resist getting on the floor to it irrespective of whether I made a tw*t of myself or not.
  18. :D Brilliant Lol!!
  19. Just watched the One Show. and my verdict? Un-fookin-believable!!!!!! I can't believe that Bristol people actually paid more for their meals in the 'pay what you like' scheme. Always found them a bunch of tightwads when trading down there. Oh and the monkeys were amusing too!
  20. I saw her at the Northampton weekender in 2006, alongside The Falcons, Chris Clarke, Bobby Taylor, Tommy Good and Pat Lewis
  21. Of course it was unrepresentitive of the Soul scene. When was the last time you saw a dance floor populated only by young fit females? Anyone who begrudges Levanna and the other young souls their moment in the sun is a curmudgeon in my opinion. We all have different experiences on our respective northern soul journeys. Who is to say what is the right or wrong way to enjoy northern soul?
  22. A good DJ plays all the tunes that you want to hear and dance to. A great DJ plays all the tune I want to hear and dance to.
  23. I prefer the underplayed cheapies that are masquerading as Northampton Town FC.
  24. I hear what you are saying Tezza.......this thread took me back to when I was a teen and I heard The snake, Cochise and a few others that put me off Northern soul for about 25 years! Had I heard a different set of NS 'classics, ( Del-larks/Eddie Parker for instance) my soul history may well have been very different. To use your analogy, the N.S musical synopsis that I had at 17 didn't do it for me..........or perhaps I just wasn't ready...........who knows! I know it took me a couple of attempts to read LOTR but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down and have read it about 4 times and it's the same with soul.
  25. But surely you are allowed not to like them because they don't do it for you? I've never particularly liked 'The Snake' or 'Do I love you'. That's not to dismiss them, it's just a matter of taste. I would much rather hear 'Fox in a mini skirt' to use Lincsyoungsoul's example so before people start telling him he has to serve some sort of Northern Soul apprenticeship, how about letting him get on with liking what he likes eh?
