From the album: Steve Tower's 50th

  2. Yours is very smart!
  3. Spot on Jaco!
  4. After three years of being slated at art school, one gets to learn the difference between objective and subjective criticism. Trevski gave his honest opinion (for that is what it was) and he is entitled to that and no-one can argue with him about if the mid section of the book didn't do it for him, cos that's his sentiment. In the same way that a played out oldie to one person may be fresh and vibrant to new ears Reg's story may be so so to some and a riveting read for others. I would be considered a "returnee" had I been around the first time, so I look forward to reading the book and live through Reg something I didn't experience for myself.
  5. I'm coming up to 50 but in terms of the scene, I'm young (only been on it 6-7 years). That's all I want to do, is listen and dance to great tunes, whether they be R&B , newies, oldies rare, worth five bob or five million. Not interested in collecting, even if I could afford it, I'm happy to own on CD, MP3 or whatever, the tunes I love. When I'm on my death bed I know I won't look back and wished I'd danced more and had more fun cos the last 6 years have been the best of my life. So maybe it's not so much age as attitude!
  6. Love both those tracks posted on this thread. Great energy!! Regarding the new blood, there is another possible scenario. Rather than waiting for the young people to join us (and why should they?) the likes of Liam's Beat Boutique, Brighton Beach, The Buzz and other similar clubs will absorb those with a leaning towards soul, without all the "parents" and rules. When in say 10-15 years the majority of people on the soul scene will be too old and knackered to go out, those that are left will have to join the youth movement. Just a thought!
  7. I enjoyed the CD he did at Christmas time for those that wanted one!
  8. I don't know (but then I don't know alot!) but welcome anyway!
  9. Clacton on Sea then cos that's the driest place in Britain!
  10. Even I like hanging round the door at Rugby!
  11. Read Mr Darcy's posts, that will explain quite alot.
  12. It dries bl**dy fast! You may have to put your prices up if you are planning to live near London! (Being an American, you probably think John O' Groats is near London! )
  13. Great idea and artwork....from one artist to another! What paint do you use?
  14. I have never ever understood the attraction of Tina Turner in the 80's . How did that "caterwailing" (nicely put!) get to be so popular???
  15. I'm glad I read the rest of this thread because, Chris you have hit the nail on the head. it doesn't matter how great the music is, what "young person" would really want to go to a place full of people their parents age? I wouldn't have, any more than i now want to go to a place full of under 30's.
  16. Martha Reeves and the Vandella's in the mid 90's in Swindon. She sounded like a croaky old woman I'm afraid.
  17. The Falcons on their one and only trip to the UK , Northampton 2006. Superb!
  18. Welcome Johnnyboyuno! What a shite first post! (Only joking!)
  19. Blimey, that's what I look like when I'm trying to shuffle! You havn't seen any dancing though until you've seen this.......... https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg
  20. Agree that Ray Charles' I don't need no Doctor is a real toughie to dance to which makes it more of a challenge cos it's one of my favourite soul tunes. One record played at Hemel Hempstead that really caught me out was introduced by Reg (author) as one seperating the men from the boys as a dancer and then proceeded to play 'Seven rooms of gloom' by the Four Tops. Yeah right I thought, it's only a Motown track.......Well, it starts of really slow, barely jiggable, then moves into a good dance able tempo then goes bloody mad ......it's like being on one of those bucking bull things, the increase in speed either throws you off or you hang on for grim death, determined not to give up no matter how much it hurts/how stupid you look.
  21. I remember that thread Kevin and I'm sure it's one and the same. In that thread, the setting fire to feet was mention and I thought "yeah, that would look pretty good if someone was doing a really good shuffle, it would make sense. However, I don't think the flames work as well with acrobatics, especially as one guy's arms are on fire too, which detracts from the "feet of fire" allegory. Still, what do I know, I only have a degree in Graphic design and have been a practicing artist for 24 years!
  22. Well, Liam and Kev are from other countries...... I think you are being well harsh. It's like saying no-one should support a Division 2 football team cos they play much better football in other countries. Surely , at the end of the day, as Doc says, it's how you feel inside yourself when you are dancing that counts? And different people have different ways of expressing themselves. The acrobatics were born out of youthful bursts of energy triggered by the music which needs an outlet. Again as Doc says, stepping from side to side sometimes isn't enough sometimes . For what it's worth, I don't/can't do acrobatics, I wish I could ( just to have it in the armoury, so to speak) and I know damn well if I'd have got into soul 30 years ago, I would have been doing it.
  23. Well, the first time I ever went to the 100 club I saw Trickster doing leg stretches on the stage and I though what the f*ck as I've never seen any soulies doing it before or since! Mind you when I saw him dancin, I could understand why he needed to. Would be quite easy to tear a muscle I would imagine. Anyway, for what it's worth, I enjoyed the vid. Great dancing but it's obvious that for the sake of effect that the acrobatics are going to highlighted, that's just the attention grabbing way the media is. That's not to say that those in the video can't "dance" because they patently can!
  24. I think the the "Dean Parrish" (insert other soul act) story would make a great film! I enjoyed the Ray Charles film which showed how a black blind boy from the poor south could make it to the top, but I think a story about someone who thought his musical career came to nought only to find out years later that his (and other silmilar supposedly no hopers) music has been cherished in a different country would make a good, uplifting screen play?
  25. Trust you to spit your poison on what has been a happy thread..........
