  1. Nice one, forgot all about it, forgot i even knew it, just got it up on u tube and OMG, all came back to me. How good does it feel when that happens!  ( Before you ask  i have been living in a cave in Outer Mongolia for the last 30 years. even so i should get out more i know)  :D

  2. I remember asking the muscly black lad with the blonde hair cut (Wayne Hackett from Leigh when I later was allocated old enough to be allowed to speak to him on a level  ) that used to dance to the left of the stage in M's what this instrumental was that I'd heard each time I had been in M's but had no idea what it was...... "'Scuse me mate but what's this?"

    The reply.....

    "A Ton Of Dynamite!!"

    In fucking one!

I was sold on this life that I have since lived by, right then and right there.

I still miss the intensity of M's.

Anyone used to nick in the Casino round the back through M's btw (creep through M's with the lights on, through the double doors by the staircase and down into the Gents toilets and hide in the bogs)?

If you did you understood that the Casino was built on an incline.

We got in through the roof on more than one occasion (kid you not)

And we also hid in a "cupboard" after the early session until the nighter started!

Young, foolish and happy, eh. :D

  3. Is it just me or do other people after coming across a "new tune" and after listening to it quite a few times and having it spinning around in your head and then thinking it's the greatest northern tune of all time you fight yourself from listening to it (like you can do at the touch of a button in these modern fangeled days) so the freshness/ hairs on the back of your neck/novelty doesn't wear off?

  4. Thinking back to the first time you came across "Northern" be it at your local Youth Club or even a bigger venue did you come away thinking there was some great music played there but tunes A, B , and C where shite?

Probably not, so does it come down to over exposure or to just becoming more educated?

  5. ..a 'big name dj' wouldn't play a record that was in the charts a year earlier in the main room at Wigan.

It's because of stories like this that people think Wigan played whatever was in the charts. They actually played the rarest of the rare Northern Soul. Mr M's might have played it or Evison maybe but don't associate it with the real Wigan.

    Top sounds from 75

FRANKIE CROCKER - TON OF DYNAMITE

    SKULLSNAPS - I'M YOUR PIMP

LARRY SANTOS - YOU GOT ME WHERE YOU WANT ME

JEANETTE HARPER - PUT ME IN YOUR POCKET

BILLY WOODS - LET ME MAKE YOU HAPPY

    WILLIE MITCHELL - THE CHAMPION

CAPREEZ - HOW TO MAKE A SAD MAN GLAD

YVONNE BAKER - YOU DIDN'T SAY A WORD

    KING ERRISON - ZOLA

FOUR PERFECTIONS - I'M NOT STRONG ENOUGH

DRIFTERS - YOU GOT TO PAY YOUR DUES

    and

DRIFTERS - SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

    ?????????????

Remember Edwin Starr, Contact, being played in the main room at the Casino early 79 by a big name Dj and it was still rattling about in the lower reaches of the charts.
  6. Just looked at the book price for Leon Haywoods Baby Reconsider "on our favourite on line price guide" and he's got the issue @ £100 and the demo @£175. I'm sure i looked fairly recently and it was up near the £800 mark? Is there a mistake? Did i dream it? Or would that be a regular revaluation?

  7. In the last few days i noticed a record for sale on ebay usa, (book price £150) which sold for around $80, then a day later noticed another copy by the same seller up for auction. (Described in the same condition, M-)

Having looked at his feedback it shows he's sold at least 6 copies in the last 2 months, a quick look at popsike and another record auction info site shows no mention of any of them.

Would there be a innocent explanation for this?

  8. LOL

Yep, some bastrards gonna have to pay mate. :boxing: I know exactly what you mean. We were fed some right shit at times - absolute shit. It's hard to define isn't it - but I like some more down tempo soul that would never have been played back in the day - stuff that if you have a feeling for is much more uptempo than is immmediately obvious. Does that make sense? Stuff that you can feel - and move your head to.

    Peter

It makes me smile when I read quite often how we were "fed some right shit" back in the day, but surely somebody must have been dancing/ listening/showing some sort of appreciation of said shit or it wouldn't have lasted more than a spin or two at the most. Or can the blame be laid at the feet of "the divs" who invaded "the scene" when the genie escaped out of the bottle?
