  4. It's more complicated than that isnt it, add the Doors, Beatles, Zepp and more and they all get thrown in the mix regularly with contemporary stuff at any fashionable Rock Pop type music pub or venue. So old and new being played in a trendy venue, Rock and Pop has and never will have a problem gaining exposure to the kids in UK. Exposing kids to soul isnt as easy as say back when youth culture was at its height, older relations into; skins, mod, suedes etc would expose younger siblings who looked up to these cool fashion dudes. Usually find playing at a popular pub throwing in some predictable and rarer stuff into a "move on up" type set, gets a few up asking what was that is the best start, tho its a slower process now as many alternative rave ups available. And if you manage to get them trek to a village hall sorta place with all middle aged folk set in their ways reminiscing to the same stuff every time, then maybe they'll give this cutting edge underground scene a miss.

  8. Hmm, you are full of yourself aint ya. Guess that's no bad thing tho just like a few others you sound real patronising on here. So you're wound up bout someone giving dance classes in NORTHERN SOUL. (And more probably some link with RW). What are you complaining about the overuse of the term NS or someone possibly making money in this scene that feeds on failure. Anyone think the words "Northern Soul" are never mis used or just reserved for the upfront cutting edge places. On this site alone we have people happy to dance in shopping centres, sway along to cds cos they don't care what format blah blah. They just choose to dip in now and again or wanna or think it's a reunion scene. So what, is that really gonna infringe on your or mine versions of Northern/Rare/Underplayed/Newies/Banging Upfront whatever you wanna call it scene.. I am confident my NS world will not be overtaken by all that commercialism. What you expect from a term over 35 years old. Fluffy, Stainy Wineblouse, Paul O'Gravely, radio 2, every other tv ad or drama and more have jumped on the NS bandwagon, the term don't mean much these days. If someone craps at my venue no I might get annoyed and have to duffem up. But maybe because I live in a republic I will always defend the right (long as its legal) to freedom of choice. And deffo no longer think I'm back in 75ish. I thought the Mod 79 thing was shi'e and am sure a few Wheelites thought that the Casino was initially pants. And maybe just maybe in some of these commercial exploits a true soulie finds their calling. And no Mike it don't mean we shouldn't discuss but allow 5 minutes for differences. KTF and dance like you wanna
  9. If someone thinks there is a market for a NS dance school has it got to get approval from certain NS folk first? And then the people who decided to go to such lessons, should we deride them? I choose to let people make their own choices, if that means in your opinion I have no integrity so be it. If its good it will work, if its crap more likely it will fail. Thankfully all those records that at sometime some A&R Supremo thought were substandard tosh found a home, huh integrity eh.
  10. Hmm sorry just had a vision, dancing like a jerk with a willy warmer on in a shopping arcade, think there's the start to a film there.
  11. You raise the issue of integrity. I'm not debating whose whose events/productions/tat are best. its about freedom of choice, the right to buy some NS willy warmer or go learn how to dance like a jerk if i want to. The hypocricy shown on this (and other related threads) is funnier than the humour. A dance school gets ridiculed this time, but not before. The oldies brigade get slagged off, yet its its ok for the (Wigans) chosen few to attend/create revival events when it suits and on and on. The artful dodger
  12. It was said with a smiley face and then a few self righteous brothers chump up about how great and perfect this scene is (which for the most part it is): On this perfect scene: Ive never heard deridery comments on here or venues about the overplayed oldies, baggy/beer towel wearing brigade Never noticed events deliberately run on same nights Sellers dont drip feed rare records into the market...... The list goes on The great thing about here is that any hypocrisy is written in print for all to see (less they now go delete those posts) As for the commercialism, seems its ok only for some to attend or create films/plays/dance lessons/Revival reunions/music hall events and stick the word WIGAN in but not for others, end of day its a big menu of choicee you can have your soul rare or well done with all the trimmings. Mike when you saw me leading the Diplomats conga, did you notice the smile on our faces. It was the smile of death, we were celebrating the fact that most northern soul records started as naive attempts by artists at making a buck out of a their musical skills, the fact that they became tragic failures who were completely ignored by mainstream and only known by the appreciated by the knowledgeable few filling us with glee,we could really feel the angst (goes down on one knee, clenched fist to heart whilst remembering to switch off flashing light whirring NS dickie bow)
  13. Maybe some people lack the confidence and feel the need to get a few pointers before they incorporate their own involuntary movements to do their own thing and get laffed at in their own right by the soul dance police
  14. Would it be ok if lessons were free? As far as can see nobodys been forced to partake
  15. Had a few good nights in the Stables, R.I.P. Johnny

  18. Yes like many a "poppy" record I have much affection/memories for but dont want to hear out, too many soulful tunes not enough time

  21. Its "Date with the rain" Eddie Kendricks on Tamla, a popular play over the years in the modern rooms. oh err you meant the next track doh Danny
  22. Depending if there still able for it ;O'Jays, Dells, Detroit Spinners, Tymes (best live ive seen) and of course Little Anthony & Imperials
  23. Surely the lack of Carlsberg Special Brew being served, and a preference for weed over pills have some significance from back in the day
  24. Licensing laws here mean its impossible to have an allniter, no proper weekender but make do with our 2 days anniversary. Personally have always preferred the tunes and craic over the time of day the last record plays, be it 3am or 8, must dash off to our disco
