  2. Its deffo not Madeline as she's listened to it. I reckon its Sondra Williams (Blinky) been din my head in this has
  3. Percy Sledge does a good version of "Dark end" too. "Stay in my corner" by the Dells for me
  4. Not a good idea, Soul Source would be accussed of being a Soul Police site. So the 100 club, Lifeline, can only be mentioned four times in a year. Your actually encouraging new nights to start by taking advantage on such limitations in the amount of times established regular nights can give a shout out.
  5. Sleepless Nights: Original playlists, original vinyl
  6. Have not gone through every thread but why has the term "Northern Soul" become the domain of oldies rooms, when back in 1973 am assuming most tunes were "new and upfront". From a djn aspect, thought was always about pushing tunes, trying to blend a few in with current biggies. Else a jukebox will do.

  8. Guitarist Marvin has passed away R.I.P. site info From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/a...0#ixzz1ZUD4XYjT Susan Whitall/ Detroit News Music Writer Motown's Marv Tarplin, who as a guitarist and songwriter was a vital part of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles' sound, has died. The Atlanta, Ga. native was 70 and living in Las Vegas at the time of his death. Details of when and how are still sketchy, but Jeanne Sorensen, who books engagements for the Miracles today out of Metro Detroit, said that Tarplin's daughter Talese Tarplin confirmed that her father died in Las Vegas. Marv Tarplin left Michigan, and the Miracles, in 1973. Billy Wilson of the Motown Alumni Association sent out an email alert late Friday afternoon that Tarplin had died, lauding him as the Miracles' "secret weapon." http://en.wikipedia....ki/Marv_Tarplin Referred to as The Miracles' "secret weapon",[1] ,Tarplin began his career accompanying a teenage Detroit, Michigan girl group known as The Primettes (later The Supremes). The Primettes sought an audition with Motown Records, and Tarplin played guitar as they performed for Miracles lead singer Smokey Robinson. Robinson was impressed by Tarplin's guitar playing, and lured him away from the Primettes to join The Miracles. Tarplin joined The Miracles in 1958. In the 2006 Motown DVD release, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles: The Definitive Performances 1963-1987, Robinson and fellow Miracles Pete Moore and Bobby Rogers commented that Tarplin's unique guitar- playing style was reminiscent of the late Curtis Mayfield, and was actually the inspiration behind many of their greatest hits. Whilst Tarplin remained with the Miracles for as long as Robinson was their lead singer, he is only present on the cover of three classic Miracles albums: Cookin' with The Miracles (1962), I'll Try Something New (1962), and The Fabulous Miracles (1963). He is mentioned, though not pictured, on the back cover of the group's very first album, Hi... We're The Miracles (1961), and listed as an original group member. As a songwriter, Tarplin helped co-compose many of the Miracles' hit singles, amongst them the million-selling Grammy Hall of Fame winner "The Tracks of My Tears" for which he received the ASCAP Award Of Merit (1965), "My Girl Has Gone" (1965), "I Like It Like That", (1964), "Going to a Go-Go" (1965), "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" (1967), and Point It Out (1968). In addition, Tarplin co-wrote several Robinson produced hits by Marvin Gaye, including the Top 10 million selling hits, "Ain't That Peculiar" and "I'll Be Doggone". His guitar work is featured prominently on Gaye's Top 40 hit, "One More Heartache", which he also co-wrote,and another of Gaye's chart hits, 1965's "Take This Heart of Mine". He also played on The Four Tops 1970 Top 20 hit, Still Water (Love),co-written by fellow Miracle Smokey Robinson. He also appeared with the group on The Ed Sullivan Show, the 1964 motion picture The T.A.M.I. Show, THE 1965 CBS television special, Murray The K - It's What's Happening, Baby, and virtually all of the group's personal appearance concerts worldwide, including the legendary Motortown Revue shows in the early 1960s.[citation needed] Tarplin left the Miracles in 1973, shortly after Smokey Robinson and his wife Claudette left the group. His replacement in The Miracles was Donald Griffin, brother of Billy Griffin, Robinson's replacement in the group.[citation needed]He died 29th sept 2011 Robinson and Tarplin continued to collaborate as writers on Robinson's solo recordings, including the Top 10 hits "Cruisin'" (1978) and "Being with You" (1981). Tarplin also continued to play guitar on record and in concert for Robinson, and, until 2008, continued to tour with Robinson. In 2007, Milwaukee, Wisconsin musician, Paul Cebar, paid homage to Tarplin with his song "Marv's Fluttering Guitar (For Marv Tarplin)" from the album Tomorrow Sound Now For Yes Music People.[citation needed] Tarplin's phenomenal skills as a guitarist and songwriter were demonstrated on many hits of The Miracles, as well as many studio recordings and concert appearances. He served in The Miracles for well over a decade until joining Smokey Robinson after Smokey departed from The Miracles to pursue a solo career. Tarplin is also pictured on the cover of the 2009 Motown CD release, The Miracles-Depend On Me:The Early Albums (2009) .His guitar riffs at the intro of The Miracles' million-seller "The Tracks of My Tears" , are among the most famous in Pop music history. Tarplin retired from touring in 2008
  9. Hi Chrissie, Copying them doesnt mean they are gonna read it or take on board changes. (maybe there email, wifi, laptop is down) its unconfirmed communication. Am not upto speed with events in Beds but I know the Stewartby one has been going a while so out of courtesy before i had even confirmed a date/venue for myself I would ring them directly and run it past them, rather than hope they noticed my plans in a general email. As you agree regular ongoing events have preference. You would surely only have to ring/txt a handful of folk, in my terminology to use Guy is a non sexist remark, I would have said you should have asked the blokes, fellas, males... With 3 other events on, one being the big annual Skank in Park, not on your soul/Ska/mod/RnB mailing list ? I would side with getting all to use SS, tho you never cover all bases Anyway am sure you checked with the Skank crowd for next year Take it easy
  10. James Carr a losing game is a great record for most soulies (if a little on the blues side of Northern) but if she is only 19 hardly a sin she didnt know it or think it was Northern Soul, its not such an "immediate" sound to new ears, but wasnt it great a 19 year old was up asking you? Ive never heard a dj say "It's really rare, so it MUST be good!", Tho i get your drift where guys play rare for the sake of it I thought the great thing about NS is its hard to define, now people want to pigeon hole everything. My little gripe is with comments on SS where people reading to much into the words used to define an event, its becoming a strap line creators nightmare Use NORTHERN SOUL and this infers it oldies night RARE / UNDERPLAYED see up your arse/ chinstrokers convention (its rare coz its shite) UPTEMPO this means songs with angst and heartfelt soul arnt needed here ACROSS THE BOARD, its gonna be Angie Stone, Drizabone, Voices of E Harlem plus hammered oldies all the way SOUL NIGHT lightweights who meet up and gratuitously dj for each other usually at the expense of an Nighter Each venue/dj has their take on NS, surely its alot easier to gauge which one suits ya in these times without having to pigeon hole everything. Agree with Carm's post
  11. Hey Chrissie For your own gig/health think your better emailing or phoning the other promoters directly rather than hoping their gonna read through your mailouts (If they havnt asked to go on list then why would they). In my view regular nights have preference over one offs, all you have to say is im planning a do on x if its a prob let me know soonest. You only need to ask the guys who do regular events. Get everyone to use here to check, apart from Skank in Park, there was another event posted on SS for The Pheasant and Molly had a Modern Soul Night in Russell Park Club too. Your mailouts should be more a "whats on" aimed at dancers. Anyway peace to all in sunny Bedford
  12. Well done Mike, no more of that Monkey Business ?

  16. Hadnt heard any output before but got sent the 45 "Mr Fortune and Fame" a heavy funk track, Canadian/Jamaican MP's vocals are good, link to sample on youtube
  17. worth mentioning..... bonnie blanchard - your the only one cookie scott - i dont.. volumes - i've never been so in love arthur willis - the hurting is over fantastics - where theres a will
  18. Listening to a dj just playin big sounds discovered/broken by somebody elses hardwork isnt everyones idea of top ns dj, or great night out. Prefer to hear someone with the confidence for a few unknowns (underplayed from yesterday or the big sounds of tomorrow maybe) Plus if your trying to fill a big venue, as a promoter how do you convince yourself and folk this unknown guy is gonna pull in the crowd and manage to play these big ticket tunes in the right order. Ah yes maybe MrLoadsamoney can pay for everyone to come in to his own night, right next door to an established outlet
  19. lotsa paranoid people here Hugh but maybe first should have done a search of site, anyways have fun, most of the 7ts a bit hazy for me, but then again so is today
  20. I was carefu,l thats why I credited the TM in my reply, something you have failed to do in any of your posts, you seem to view the accreditation of avatars different to that of obscure, dead, double jobbing soul artists and their small run vinyl work.
  21. Couldnt get the avatar to download properly but you get the idea, so what you paying the "Felix the Cat" cats
  22. As your big into being part of the Self Righteous Brothers, how much did you pay for using the "Felix the Cat"TM avatar
  23. Eh, if its a cover up that usually means the record has been and will probably remain overlooked by everyone apart from the coveruperer , who will now create attention to the track missed for years by everyone else. Cant see that much income being lost, more than likely the artist is brown bread anyway. Its usually a bit of fun/intrigue to get folk guessing
  24. Dont get across much now, but modern room again a great vibe, not all mindblowing and some remixes of records that dont need messin with but peeps up for a good time cheers to all for making the whole weekend happen, not easy in this climate, playlists i need to find
  25. Agree but as there is no Soul Police Poster and trades description approval department disappointment or misconception will arise a problem that isnt just confined to ATB events. Is feedback classed as advertising? ie;....Loads in, great atmosphere, thanks for letting me play these.......... Still think in this age of HYPErspace, dj playlists lists, and deciphering feedback is best bet.
