have always thought doin an instrumental kept costs down ; studio time, royalties and so on, added to the fact that instrumentals were more popular in many genres back then am thinking: Albatross, telstar, walk in the black forest, soul coaxing, jb all star's, classical gas, booker T, crusaders, ramsey lewis, herb albert, acker bilk.....(if you discount techno, trance and unsoulful house) funny how the instrumental has died off, good old fashioned death songs too what happened to them..BG's "New York mining disaster", "Leader of the pack", "Seasons in the sun" used to have a right ol singsong round the fire in days of yore.

my brains gone, some of this and other current related threads/polls is getting me confused (thats easy eh) Yes unearthing danceable fresh or forgotten should be what djn is about, and those clubs and dj's who do this best usually get noticed most and keep driving this scene. havin the money to buy a recognised "big ticket" isnt always that inventive. I've seen on this site a distinction between playing/hearing UK as not as good as US original! why? sometimes the UK is alot harder. Some wont play/hear lp only tracks at a venue, again why? Apparently some will walk out of a room if they see non original on the turntable (if you can determine a counterfeit from a real one in a darkened room at 5 paces, well more power to you), tho its allright for them or others when dj'n if you have the original; be it completely knackered sitting cosily somewhere nearby, can now understand the growth in demand for unplayable "big ticket" records. Its also ok to cut a dub of something you've once owned, tho if its the original knackered one you'd be better off going to vinyl carvers with a cd copy, better still create a label for that boot. If a dj plays a boot its an admission he aint got (a playable at least) copy, maybe he caters for requests (unfortunately for some theres many regular punters who just want to hear the known classics). If its only the 1 or maybe 2 harder tunes and he makes up for it with a set that overall is original and offers fresh food for thought, no major harm done imo. If you Play the odd boot be it for request only (and now add the fact you never use a mic like Fluff Freeman) you probably dont mind you aint gonna be on the Northern Soul Dj career ladder. If you pay in to hear originals, you should know prior to entering from the dj list/reputation what to expect (and a good promoter should make this clear. If for some reason you are dissapointed head straight to the door via the promoter for a refund explaining your distress. If at a supposed call it "grade A" OVO night, and you notice a dj doing something underhand, ideally especially if your a fellow dj you should question him there and then, if you aint got the balls or are a pacifist you should go straight to the promoter asking what the story was, naming and shaming if not satisfied with outcome. So should I skip my albums and uk 45's, track down some knackered vinyl ashtray's (with matching boots), and get some dj lessons from Mike Smash & Dave Nice

John Bowie - At the end of the day, class tune

Its the same record, think my label credits say Bobby & Sylvia too , its possibly Sylvia Robinson co founder of Sugar Hill & All Platinum records who normally dueted with Mickey Baker

why cant all dj's, arrive on time, avoid playin someone elses current spin, stop lookin down at their feet, keep hands outa pockets, wear a funny nose and flashin lights, dance the can-can whilst reciting poetry and be able to perform all this without feckin the decks up for the next Jimmy Saville.

I only recently purchased the volume 3 (quick eh) of JM's price guide dunno if been said before... Interesting to see all the changes since vol1, once printed in a useful guide prices were sure to go one way. Like all JM stuff its professionally presented, a very useful reference tool. One thing slightly bugging me now is where an auction winning price (alway's a high one) is used instead of a set price. Does this mean these said records are so in demand, that they should only be auctioned from now on = variable pricing. Taking this further if more were price indicated in this way, the guide could become more of a "best of popsike" thingy, as all items sell for higher (or lower) if auctioned. So have price guides been benefictial, knowledge v inflation ? And how best to resolve the problem's of pricing in demand records? With the ability of modern day scoundrels, must by the bootleggers guide #3 soon, how long before label pictures and matrix numbers (scratched or stamped) are essential info for all records listed over say £ 30.

havnt dismissed anybody, just stated imo with that guys track record and attitude to punters/artists etc, why is anybody suprised that he may pull a fast one now and again. (Many promoters have had too at some time) Why start whinging about these little problems and the fact that his friendly customer service dept threaten anyone who badmouth his product. (This is not an uncommon retort for many big money machines) Am sure the KRL steamroller will not be sidetracked by this latest indiscretion, the fact that some people didnt fully enjoy the latest big event is a mere blip, and I'm sure you and many other like minded souls will continue to support and enjoy Stoke and other such wonderful "best in the country" events.

with my biting wit i was attempting to highlight the irony in all of us finding andy's postfunny. In that lampooning those who attend his events are all beer towels/chunky liver stained legs etc... obviously failed to register with you and your "Original Mr Northern Soul" comment. In that if you went your possibly a chunky liver stained flary skirt wearing beer bellied regular at such events (who also lacks irony) IMO anyone who goes to his events in the first place get what they deserve, danny

Very funny but does this mean Mag's is also a bit err chunky. Why hasnt she been ridiculed for going to his night in the first place by the Soul Police?????? Ive never knowingly bought or attended KRL stuff. It wont make much difference tho, most who attend his events probably aint on here, aint interested in the politics and wouldnt attend many other do's as they'd feel it a little daunting attending venues where everyone dresses correctly, knows all the tunes, shuffles real cool and dont welcome "outsiders" pigeon holeing them as sad returnees or young upstarts who know nowt. As I see it he caters for the less serious, either other promoters dont want them or have been unable to attract them. Just like the rumours about djs playing non originals, we were told "the sh*ts gonna hit the fan" "names were gonna be named" ..as usual nothing happened and it all quitened down either it was true or someone was telling porkies in first place. As for askin the dj's to stop djn, whose gonna compensate them, their not guilty. As said am not one of his fans, he's made yet another unsouly error but its not the first time is it. danny

in a lighter moment, had a chuckle at the 3 adds that feature at bottom of this thread. customised wristbands, silicon wristbands and 24 hr ticket printers
-
seems the wristbands were originally issued out of USA and then legally reissued in UK (possibly under license) heard there was a complimentary record, the Proto Jays or is someone pullin my plonker (again)
