For serious floor detonation drop Martha Reeves & Vandella's One Way Out. Maybe Tune Up Junior Walker, Walk In My Shoes Gladys Knight, Barbera Randolph I've Got A Feeling, what about the Spinners I'll Always Love You. The Contours Just A Little Misunderstanding gotta be a surefire winner one of the essential Motown sides for any beginer.

Good old Millwall, the only team with 4 l's in it's name and they can't pronounce one of them.....awww bless.

Sherlie Mathews who wrote My Little Girl was also a pivotal figure at Mirwood BB a very interesting lady, wrote My Sugar Baby as well and a chit load of others. Produced, wrote, arranged and probably changed that flat tyre for you if it was raining lol.

At only 62 I'm also one of the younger members too.

Almost certain it was listed as a new release in an issue of B&S at the time. Although anyone's guess which issue.

You mention Fred Smith in one of the posts. Seem to recall an 'urban legend' on the scene way back when that said person was Barry White, well yyetknow what urban legends are like. First heard BMMTP at the Mecca courtesy of Levine/Curtis and it created quite a stir, just the kind of tune to get you hooked. Was it played at the Cats before that. A few I thought were Mecca firsts had actually broken at the Cats.

Lou Pride was being played at the Mecca before August '73 'cos that's when I left for the Army. Sam's would have been later surely?

Having not had any vinyl for years, having got by with tapes and for the past while t'internet, I've started throwing a few cheapies I didn't know and a few memories together. So rediscovering the pleasure of listening to records is something I'm looking forward to with anticipation. Waiting till I get a few more then I'll be on here searching for advice about decks and connecting to my pc.

Just have to agree with this. -

Just pulled this off a list. I remember reading somewhere years ago, Blues and Soul perhaps, about The Platters 65 so when I saw this gave it a listen then bought. Can't find any info about the label. I pull my info from the Web but can find nothing on the label and a brief look has not yielded any info about a recording industry in Las Vegas at the time. So owt yer knows would be welcome. -
Well that's just trashed my youtube favourites list.

Still digging through the bargains. Nice mid-paced and sweet. -
Is it the drink I've had or do the drums on This Won't change have been recorded to sound like African hollowed out tree trunk drums. Love hypothesising at times about the roots. Like the Fyfe Fifer I've always liked but when I saw a BBC programme about the African roots of the Blues where the pipe was an early part of a Blues tradition it made sense of Brian Jackson teamed with GSH's poetry and insight. Think I've mentioned the programme before but it's name escapes me.

Northern Soul records that should have been hits?
jam66 replied to Jem Britttin's topic in All About the SOUL
Always thought Jackie Lee's Oh My Darling is a tune missing from the general public's life. A mate of mine's mum used to love Toby Legend so perhaps that could have made a stir at the time. Things like Walk With A Winner perhaps fit in with the mood of that time as it contains elements of a generation before's formative musical experiences and a look at the charts at the time would confirm this. So many of the 'Big City Sounds' could perhaps have been hits with the generation with disposable income. Bill Bush is another that springs to mind as the pop buyers are as much a sucker for the quirky as we are. Sad Girl comes to mind for similar reasons. What about the Charades Key To My Happiness is another piece of perfection that perhaps should have shifted a few copies. One thing I noticed when I used to be at a rock fan's house having a couple of beers and what have you was the absolute full on sound if I could get him to play some Otis Redding etc. The lushness of the tunes in the sense of how textured they were could have something to do with why so many were ignored although Tamla got away with it they tended not to steamroller the aural senses in such a manner and without digging through lists of '60's charts weren't the lyrics of many Northern Tunes (Soul in general really), a little on the mature and insightful level in comparison? Could be quite a list of what the public missed out on at the time. One that I would have loved to have been a hit rather than could have as I'm not sure, was To Win Your Heart, always as close to a classical operatic aria and production as pop has ever got in my humble opinion. -

Nice UK demo of this through the door this morning. -
Is the white label one pukka, and what's the difference from the blue if it is. Cheers.

Hadn't come across this Fred Hughes one before but when I saw it on a list as a nice condition demo for £6 thought it well worth a punt. Ever get any plays? -
I'm a bit of a dyed in the wool 60"s(ish) styles but love looking around stuff. Listened To Esther Phillips Going Out Of My Head with new ears today and thought what a tune to play out. Modern Soul at one of it's finest moments but with what a nice Chugging piece of Northern underneath that. I'll post it if you don't mind just as a reminder to give it a listen.

Is it just me or does any one else find Sinatra absolutely appalling? What a horrible flat, toneless, tuneless voice that man had. Kudos to Nelson Riddle though. The two gentlemen over there with the violin cases and broken noses...he went that way >>>>>>>>>>>>>fast.

Mystery 45? Johnny Cameron - People Are Changing on Sanfris
jam66 replied to soulfulsevens's topic in Look At Your Box
I was going to comment that it had to be a knock out track but didn't dare. -
Apparently, though I've not had word back yet, the Blendells Huggies Bunnies could have been written in some form of celebration of the aforementioned Huggy's groupies.

Thought I'd sling up a touch of Summer Sax.

Listened to some of the clips on the Ace website, I only really stream/youtube oldies don't get into pinching the newer issues. Definitely worth a listen there's quite a few I've enjoyed, I've still a few to listen to still. I really like The Larks harmonies which is what piqued my interest really tight I feel. I do not underestimate what you've done and continue to do to bring as full and exhaustive overview of the music we love Ady. Couldn't resist a little dig though.

No Robb not exactly. I've seen you post elsewhere that you've worked for Disney, it must get hot in those costumes so perhaps it's a little heat fatigue? There was method in my madness for as you can see in the following photo which the poster is at pains to point out has a 'Live' notice in the window but it looks more like the second store judging by the other photos hence the question. Here's hoping you get better at the "English as it is wrote" for as Churchill famously said 'Up with this we will not put.' With all due respect Ady I don't wish to spend nearly £40 for CD's I won't play I stream all my music now. I know what fantastic booklets you put out as when I did buy CD's I bought some of yours. I also posted as a talking point to see what other people knew. I swear sometimes it's like a dank corner of the ancient Library Of Alexandria with a gaggle of grave robbers squabbling over the deceased's effects. Still a pastime for me and I've hardly been anywhere for years so I've lots of thing I'm finding out that the rest of you take for granted. Plenty of sounds I've not heard and plenty to re-activate for me personally thanks to the wonderful WWW. Rationing myself too wouldn't want to become jaded. Sorry for putting up the full article Mike went full retard for some reason I know the rules I post elsewhere on the net. Marv suggested putting a snippet up as he's always changing it, another aside Robb I did put a link in. So be a bit gentler with us bungling amateurs. I try and advertise the site wherever I have a comment or an opinion about something as it's such a valuable resource. l'd have warned them a charisma bypass may be a good idea before visiting if I'd have been aware.

Apparently Mr Dolphin was a bit of an operator and took his records out to the stores himself, not because he couldn't get a distributor as is the story behind many of the labels and artists we listen to but simply to cut out the middle man. In the following article the writer informs us that no one was surprised when he called his labels Cash and Money. Perhaps not that much of a surprise him getting shot over royalty payments perhaps. One of the less savoury characters, or at least from what one reads. Also in the following article is a little tid-bit about Herb Reed and the beginnings of the Platters. https://www.uncamarvy.com/Turks/turks.html Cheers Robb, was the original store where they had the DJ in the window then?
