  3. We will be spinning all his favourite tunes this Sunday 30 September. Hope to see you there, I’ll give these two-his favourite Motown records-an airing.
  4. Many people will doubtless be aware but for those who hadn't heard, Alf passed away on 26 May. His funeral was attended by many of the countless number of friends he'd made on the scene over the years and his family were comforted by the respect everyone had for him. A fixture at Wigan Casino, Alf also worked in Russ's shop at times and after the Casino closed he was a regular at places like the Saints Club, Lowton Civic, the Orwell, the Monaco, Heywood Civic, Bury Town Hall and Prestwich. He had an eclectic taste in music and not only loved all Soul music but also rock, jazz and blues. He was also an accomplished acoustic guitar player. Alf's top six records were featured by Richard Searling on his BBC Manchester programme as a tribute to one of the stalwarts of the Soul scene not just in Wigan but across the north west and there's an event being held to remember him in Wigan on 30 September with many of his long-standing mates playing across-the-board Soul. Details are on the events page.

  8. Looking for a good copy please PM with price.
  9. Can't find it anywhere. Cheers.
  10. Strange though doing a few Northern/handbag nights around Wigan I've been asked for Shattered Glass. People are convinced it was played at the Casino but I don't recall that. Maybe it was at the short pants sessions? I tell them to go down King Street, there's loads of broken glass there.
  11. Of course a Tamla act and a VIP act would record on Soul wouldn't they?
  12. That's "Shoes" in the background isn't it? Not the real version but a copy like the "Have Love Will Travel" on the insurance advert.

  14. My copy also has the same mis-spelling. Seeing as just about anything seems fair game for booting these days it's not a real surprise that undisputed originals are going to go up in price. This seems a bit steep but someone's obviously prepared to pay it.
  15. It's over £100 now. Unbelievable. I sold my real demo for £20 (a few years back mind!).
  16. Factually wrong but who cares? Light entertainment with some good tunes thrown in. I'd like to know what that Tops tune was too, sounded a belter. And if the lead plod was in the Professionals why didn't they give "That's Why I Love You" a spin?
  17. Great tune, had it for years on a yellow demo. Never heard anyone play it though.
  18. Steve, Aud wants them for a fancy dress. And me and ManU tops? The day after you buy an Abba album mate!
  19. Does anyone know where to get the ladies' bowling-style shirts that they all wore at Wigan? And any other authentic-looking clobber? Thanks.
  20. Fair enough Peter, no worries. Do we know each other?
  21. I was DJ'ing around Wigan at the time playing new stuff. I loved it. If you like funk or modern it doesn't stop you being into Northern you know. I went to the Casino to hear Northern Soul, my real musical love. I saw the banner in the Cross Keys before the nighter and although I knew all about it I wasn't directly involved. I didn't disagree with the sentiment though I would have raised the point in a different way. And I know for certain it wasn't a Saltaire. I know who made it and who hung it up. And Peter99-not sure what you mean about me being a right scally. Scouser who goes everywhere watching Liverpool, yes. Not sure what else you're implying.
  22. Wiganers weren't called Pie Eaters not because they like pies (although they certainly do!) but because after the General Strike in 1926 workers in Wigan were some of the first to cave in and were seen to be eating "humble pie" in front of their employers.
  23. Not that I watch it much but I remember "Lover" by the De-Lites being on at the end of one episode.
