  1. Leroy Hutson at The Jazz Cafe last Friday, third time lucky for us, he cancelled at Manchester Ritz in 2014, and Blackpool last year, but the wait was worthwhile. What a show, too many class tracks to mention, what a man, blew my mind! Tim.
  2. Just acquired a copy of "Strength Of A Woman' - The Phyllis Hyman story, this has been out of print for years, re printed now, just getting stuck into it, absolutely fascinating. Tim
  3. Good, not bashing those dances floors as often, but still wasting money on records!
  4. Shows how much I know!! How are you Kegsy? Tim
  5. Shows how much I know!! How are you Kegsy? Tim
  6. This guy only made the one album, amazes me that three tracks were picked up for dance floor action. His background seems to be in rock music, his sister was married to Frank Zappa. He was due to do a Q&A at Blackpool in June, allegedly to tell tales based on hanging out with Zappa and his cronies, fortunately he didn't turn up.......no loss as far as I was concerned! Tim.
  7. Been thinkin' this over for a couple of days, thought I'd add my thoughts based on the artists I think !, I probably own most most tunes by, here goes- Bobby Womack, Otis Clay, James Carr, OV Wright, Bobby Bland, Walter Jackson, and......Marvin Smith (mostly Artistics of course) Tim.
  8. Hell, what a compilation! The term 'Low Rider Soul' is a new one on me, these are the type of tune I listen to most of the time, wasn't aware I was into 'Low Rider Soul' , I simply try to acquire 'quality' tunes, must of been doing something right for the past 40 years. Will be ordering the CD immediately. Tim.
  9. More..... I recall two tunes from that night, Dynamics on Top Ten, played by Kev Roberts, most of us had not heard it before, the other, oh dear...... Hawaii Five O by The Ventures. Just goes to show that records that have absolutely nothing to do with Soul Music are nothing new!! Tim.
  10. No great memories I'm afraid, I took some pictures, still have them, pretty poor, I was too far from the stage. I also have a flyer, lots of acts mentioned that did not appear. Tim.
  11. Linda by a two miles!! Bought this from a market stall in Soho in the early 70s, always amazed it has never had regular spins. Every time I hear it, I can't help thinking if The Whatnauts, when making the record, knew what was to come after one minute! Ha. Tim.
  12. We were there on Saturday, first visit for a year, we had noticed numbers declining over the previous couple of years, but there didn't seem to be less there than 12 months ago. One other observation, may seem oddball, but over recent years the the 'dancers' seemed to be outnumbered by the 'drinkers' (or those who just sit there). On Saturday, there seemed to be a higher % of attendees dancing, if that makes sense. Maybe the numbers are 'boiling down' to the remaining 'hard core' !! On a more positive note, we enjoyed the night, two big name DJs , who , in our opinion usually disappoint did great sets, avoiding overplayed and nasty pop records in the main. Need to ensure we don't leave it 12 months before we go again. Tim & Christine.
  13. I think the first 'latin' tune I heard was Ricardo Ray's excellent Nitty Gritty. Must have been 1971/72, it was played all over at the time. A nice one to own on UK Roulette. Tim.

    RIP Aretha

Rest in peace Aretha, no one can take your 'throne', no one has come near in the 51 years since the first Atlantic album. Tim.
  15. Cliff Richard, what a joke, why the hell is LD associating with a musical loser like Harry Webb? Gobsmacked. Tim.
  16. " Stay in Detroit". It was recorded in LA wasn't it? Much too much bolox & hot air on this topic for me now. Tim
  17. I was at the Halifax gig, hell, I must have been 14! Regarding what may, or not have been the Major's first UK gig, I recall he was due at The Wheel, but it never happened, I believe there are some posters advertising it. Could this have been on his first UK tour? Did he play elsewhere? Just a thought. Tim.
  18. Ted Massey's 'rare & underplayed' set at last years St Ives weekender, was stunning. Tim
  19. Really gettin' bored with this thread now, it has lost it's way.
  20. 'changed my direction in soul music', what a thought provoking angle........... the albums that did it for me, are the two Jerry Williams produced Doris Duke albums, along with his stunning 'In Between Tears' - Irma Thomas. Also, Bobby Bland's 'California Album' and Sam Dees "The Show Must Go On. Have 'run in tandem' with uptempo stuff AND classy albums ever since!! Tim.
  21. 'Trapped By A thing Called Love'- one of the great 'soul' records, rest in peace Denise. Tim.
  22. Hmmm.... always thought this was (yet another)nasty pop record. Tim
  23. I've always rated Martha Reeves- I Gotta Let You Go, I was well chuffed when Dave Evison played it at The Kings Hall earlier in the month- well done sir! Tim.
  24. Lots of the George Kerr wonders, High Keys, Alice Clark, Linda Jones (Just Can't live My Life). Big orchestra, strings, percussion, brass section (as opposed to 'horn' section !) and that harp. The man himself on backing vocals. Also, Gene Chandler's 'There Was A Time'. I feel out of breath every time I hear it. If you listen carefully at the very end you hear the great man go 'ooh' , he obviously knew what he had just recorded. Tim.
  25. Another Highland Room play for Messrs Levine & Curtis, a brave play in 1975, but that was their strength ! Pity we never hear this played out anywhere today, superb tune.
