  1. One of the holy grails of Aussie soul label collecting is a release on, believe it or not , a custom made Australian "Karate" label , complete with the karate kicking figure design , the record being by the Outcasts "I Found Out About You " , a great Mitch Ryder style stomper which would without doubt go down a storm on dancefloors if somebody played it ! Will try to post a label scan .....
  2. I really like it ! I think it's a great tune ! BUT it's a great POP record ! It has little to do with soul music except that no doubt Amy may have been inspired by listening to some classic soul and blues and jazz records .... I think a much more apt musical comparison for Amy would be JANIS JOPLIN or MELISSA ETHERIDGE ! I think any comparison to the likes of Etta James or Sugarpie de Santo is disrespectful to those artists and the musical culture called Soul Music that they were a part of ... If the rare soul scene relied on records like this it would surely die a swift death !!! Still, a nice tune, but I bet you Amy will never make another tune as good or establish a whole career on that record or that sound ...
  3. Godoy Colbert is equally as good as Len Jewell, can't split the two really, and as Joan mentioned, the other side of the Godoy Colbert 45 "I Wanna Thank You " is fabulous too !
  4. Chalky, are you sure she had an LP called "Cover Me" ??? Couldn't have been one of the three on Fame ?
  5. Remember reading a great story about one of soul music's greatest producers Rick Hall, who'd been trying to break Candi big on the US pop charts in the late 60's and early 70's with a run of fantastic " southern soul " style records but then let her go in frustration at the lack of appreciation from the US pop buying public ... then he described the moment he first heard "Young Hearts Run Free" on the radio , he says he "nearly fell off his chair" !!!!
  6. Of course females can be record collectors & Dj's ! Some very respected girl collectors/DJ's from Down Under : Samantha Goldie, Alex White, Maria Orlovic ........
  7. Yes Ady, Ray Dahrouge is a real talent, always loved his version of "Lifetime Guarantee of Love" on Lifesong ... he is a white guy isn't he ? Cheers
  8. Interested to have people's thoughts, memories, comments, reminiscences of Geno ... especially from those who saw him LIVE and at his peak , so to speak, in the mid 60's. Strange that many UK soul fans around at that time that I have since spoken to over the years say that they never really took him seriously as a soul act, the acts they regarded highly were Jimmy James & the Vagabonds , Ronnie Jones etc ... which is contrary to how Geno has been immortalised in histories of the UK pop scene in the 60's ... and of course his popularity that resulted from Dexy's hit "Geno" .... Was he really such a hero to London Mod's circa 65 & 66 ? But less popular with more serious soul fans in the North ? Listening to his first and biggest selling LP "Hand Clappin' Footstompin' Funky Butt Live", it is an absolutely cracking record, the adrenalin charged atmosphere is truly staggering no matter what perspective you look at it from. He really must have been Excitement Plus at his very peak, even by US soul standards .... Over to you ...
  9. Sorry Tony, not really answering your question here, but Down Under strikes again ... the Isley's "That's The Way Love Is" received a legitimate 45 release on Australian Tamla Motown , I have it with the nice OZ red bullet demo sticker. It's one of the hardest OZ TMO's to get as well !!!
  10. Thanks Dave, but unfortunately I don't have a scanning facility ... my copy however is a white demo with both sides being Streets Got My Lady , so according to John's comments, I take it that the white demos are legit and that the only boots are of the ISSUE with the two different sides ... do you agree ?
  11. What's the story on this ? Was it ever a big player on the rare soul scene ? If so , when , where, who played it etc Was the first original US label "Gaiee" ? Did it ever make the UK charts as a pop chart revival ? Was there ever an alternative version using the same backing track ? Using straight lyrics ?!!! Where recorded ? Philly ? But licensed by Motown ? What happened to old Valentino ? I remember reading something on this record in my old archives of 70's Blues & Soul issues but couldn't be bothered to dig it out ... Question, questions .............
  12. John, can you let us know whether you don't mind us - the public, that is - contacting you for authentication or you'd rather not encourage it for the sheer volume of enquiries that you are likely to get. I have a couple of things myself that I'd like to run by you ??? Or perhaps you could post on this site your comments to enquiries made by soul source members from time to time, especially for pieces that are relatively widely known to rare soul collectors. I'd love for you to clear up the situation regarding Bill Brandon's "Streets Got My Lady" , the past threads on this site, IMHO, haven't definitively cleared up the bootleg situation on that record ???
  13. MILDRED CLARK "KEEP TRYIN'" Really need this, c'mon, help me out please !
  14. Always loved the Tayster / Rojac label designs, Jack Taylor's set up out of New York . Don't have scans , can someone post up some of their designs? Cheers!
  15. Biggest intro EVER just has to be ... THE INVITATIONS "SKIING IN THE SNOW" !!!!!!!!!!
  16. Another nice version of "Only the Strong Survive" by Darrell Banks , and , for northern dancefloors a super version by the Winstons which is only available on 45rpm on an Australian EP by the Winstons also containing "Colour Me Father" !
  17. Is this on the famous jazz label CTI ? Any chance of a sound clip ? Thanks in advance
  18. Tony, I'm unable to locate my copy of the Orlons "Envy" as I write but unless my memory is fading I'm sure the flip side (bearing in mind it got issued twice) also has Barrett Strong and possibly Sonny Sanders credits on it, which leads me to believe that Cameo must have had a deal happening, for a short time at least in '64/65 , with the Chicago studios/production team at Universal ... ??? Universal around the same time were recording for Mary Wells after her departure from Motown weren't they ? As for Dee Dee and Chubby actually going to Chicago to record , I must defer to your superior knowledge and experience, but with Cameo's well known history of rather dubious recording and business practices, I couldn't imagine Cameo going to the expense of sending their acts to Chicago but rather think that perhaps they merely recorded the vocals in Philly over the Chicago backing tracks ?
  19. So we can play Willie Hutch's "Love Runs Out" off the UK Bobby Hutton/Willie Hutch 7" on UK ABC since that is a legal first issue, even though the DJ following up has it on a US Dunhill original ?
  20. I really rate this record and I get a sneakin' feelin' this record is gonna haunt a lot of collectors by becoming a big money item very soon ... Such an easy going feel to the record and the tempo, this will appeal to all tastes on the soul scene !
  21. Has this been played on the scene ? Fantastic floater, this was apparently the same guy who had the (black) rnb hit "Confidential" in the 50's, and then did jazzy things on Aura like "Let's Get It On" Anyone got a sound clip for other Soul Sourcers to listen to ?
  22. John , I've seen that Tina Mason LP around over the years but never bothered picking it up thinking , well , it's never been mentioned on the Northern/Rare Soul scene so perhaps it's not worth pursuing , but you say there are several northern style tracks on it ? Are they worthwhile tracks then ? Thanks in advance
  23. So many good records still to be appreciated on Buddah... Toni Lamarr "I'd Do Anything" Van McCoy fingersnapping magic !
