  1. They're young but enthusiastic , i'll give 'em that much !!! But it's a nice clip ! And it's always been a good dancer, what does it go for on Fontana then , Pete ? Also glad to see you're posting vids again Pete, the members on here apppreciate them a lot more than you might think
  2. I think you've gotta cut Miss Ross a bit of slack here, if she sounds a bit croaky , it's probably because she is doing the Letterman show absolutely LIVE and stone cold, and presumably this was the only song she performed that night ... So even a seasoned pro like her has to be given a chance to warm up a little bit. As I say, I haven't heard her recorded studio version on her new CD ...
  3. That's the one Malc, I haven't dug out it out of the vaults in ages , but I seem to recall it has one other tune on it with some Northern dancefloor appeal hasn't it? If nothing else it's a great LP to look at , Barbara was a stunner ! Former Playboy Pet wasn't she !
  4. Barbara McNair does a strange manic fast version on her Audio Fidelity album from the late 60's ...
  5. That's right , not a UK chart hit , but , without digging out my old Blues and Soul's from '69/70 , I seem to remember off the top of my head that it was prominently listed in the B & S's charts of popular sounds at the time and I suspect it was a popular dance floor sound with the UK soul faithful at the Wheel etc ? Did they appear in the UK at the Wheel ? Or was it a few years later on the back of "Starting All Over Again" ?
  6. yeah ken , my "bandwagon" comment was tongue in cheek of course , she does the tune pretty good , though I haven't checked out the official CD studio version yet ...
  7. Diana finally jumps on the Northern Soul band wagon with a "tailor made" version of the Spiral Starecase What d'ya think ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI3wVJ-azAM
  8. 25 or 30 quid about right for a US original but at least 100 for an original Aussie only RCA issue which has a superior take to the US version. Did it get a UK release?
  9. Love Test : Mel Carter Music of Passion : Percy Larkins What Gives You The Right : Tommy Tate Freeway To Monterey : Arnold McCuller Uphill Climb : James Govan Galveston Bay : Lonnie Hill Angel : David Sea I Dont Play That : Shirley Brown Where Is Love : J Blackfoot You Blew It : Mad Lads Bring The Beef Home To Me : Trudy Lynn What Its All About : Veda etc etc etc ... all still sound pretty good to me ! But perhaps a bit too soulful for today's 60's crowd Perhaps a bit too early 80's sounding for today's modern soul crowd And perhaps a bit too "down home" for today's Year 2K soul crowd (the kind of people who actually think tunes like Tribute to Betty are soulful )
  10. If you look at Dave Rimmer's site for the Golden Fleece discography you'll see that "Stop and Think" was allocated an actual release number, the last release on the label. I started a thread last year on this and asked whether anyone had ever seen the actual 7" release on vinyl in the USA. So maybe your acetate is the only legitimate appearance of the track in the USA. I suspect that as Golden Fleece was a CBS distributed company and the Trammps were label hopping from Buddah to Golden Fleece (CBS) then on to Atlantic for mega stardom with Disco Inferno, that CBS just let Golden Fleece go under while the Trammps moved on , and so the final release never made it to the presses. How different is the intro ? Can you post a clip of it ? Either way, great record is Stop and Think, and lead vocalist Jimmy Ellis , is unquestionably one of the greatest SOUL vocalists who ever lived, and it's a shame the Trammps are often dismissed as just a disco act. I'll have the acetate Tubbsy if you want to sell it
  11. Even I'm amazed at finding this one ! Never thought I'd ever get to see actual footage of this Invictus label act ! The line ups of the lesser Invictus & Hot Wax acts were so often mysterious and changing. Think Freda's sister Scherrie Payne is in this one ... Superb, Detroit Soul !!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tW6ytgzAa0
  12. Don''t know what fellow soul sourcerers thoughts are
  13. .... and apparently they are different versions too, are they not ?
  14. Thanks Simon , yeah, doesn't do much for me either , pretty standard early 80's synth Michael Jackson style sound. As many would say, Soul Sam's taste is not infallible, is it?
  15. What was that Bronner Bros jobbie that was popular back in the 80's , and can someone post a clip please? Thanks !
  16. My personal recollection of the 100 Club is this: In 1985, as a kid barely out of high school in Sydney Australia, I decided to spend my life savings (a short and young life at that point!) and buy a plane ticket so that I could make a pilgrimmage over to the other side of the world to the 100 Club and sample the rare soul allnighter experience. To you lot, that's a journey of 12,000 miles and $1,600 Aussie bucks , just for a night out !!! Don't know if Ady remembers me, but I ring him up out of the blue when I arrived in London and he very kindly looked after me and put me on the door on the night. Ended up meeting Ady (and sold him some Aussie vinyl pressings) and also being introduced to wonderful people such as Ian Clarke and this mad Scotsman with glazed eyes who frightened the life out of me - his name was Keb somebody !!!!!! But boy he could dance !!! Still, I think Ady and the gang must have thought I was mad travelling all that way .... All went by way too quickly, but that one night at the 100 Club remains one of the greatest experiences of my life ... that same week went to the Fuction At The Junction and the next week to Stafford Top Of The World , but there's another story there .... I have a funny feeling though that the 6T's nighters will actually go from strength to strength from here, a re-birth of sorts, "Bigger and Better" as the song goes ...
  17. By all means attend current northern and rare soul events to find out the state of play as it now exists but my humble advice is to ignore all the books specifically written on northern soul and instead start with : Robert Pruter "Chicago Soul" Tony Cummings "Sound of Philadelphia" Barney Hoskins "Say It One More Time For The Broken Hearted" Better for you to be a connoisseur of ALL forms of soul music and enter the northern/rare scene with a completely open mind.
  18. My Heart's Symphony : Gary Lewis and the Playboys
  19. Craig , in your opinion, do you feel that those mailers afford the same level of protection in transit as the "box" shaped packages that US sellers always use ?
  20. Just curious Craig, what kind of "cardboard mailer" do you use ?
  21. There is a rarer , and IMO , a slightly better version by a group called Rock N Co on the AMG label ... Mr Manship has one for sale at the moment I think for 300 quid ... there's been a couple of threads on "You Live Only Once" in the past year or so methinks ...
  22. Jocko, LP wise, there is a nice Hammond organ instrumental LP on Loma by Richard Groove Holmes. The Linda Jones of course is a brilliant LP. I'm sure I've seen a Redd Fox comedy LP on Loma. As for Ike & Tina, not sure, anyone? Hope that helps !
  23. Tone , I've never seen any other LP's of JJ other than the ones youve referred to, but it's interesting that you bracket the US EPIC & UK DIRECTION LP's together because if my memory serves me correct, the US version of the LP had a different track listing (less tracks , 10 only ?) to the UK because the US LP was released by Epic/Columbia in the US BEFORE "Breaking Down The Walls" became a hit in the UK , is that right? I think Direction in the UK added extra tracks to make it 12 in all (" IAint Lying" ? "Let's Hang On"?) ...
  24. Can someone please post a sound clip of the flip to "Manifesto" by the Case of Tyme ? It's called "Some Call It Love" , brilliant ...
  25. Well, how good is this , Ernestine gets down on Bobby Timmon's RnB classic on German TV in 1967 ... and just check out that chick backing her up on Hammond organ ... I'm gobsmacked ... what do you think ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3cBhiregO8
