  1. Good stuff indeed although one could argue that the "true" New Jersey Sound was in fact Sylvia and Joe Robinson's All Platinum/Stang/Turbo outfit of the 60's and 70's with all those classic sounds from the Moments , Whatnauts, Willie and the Mighty Magnificents etc !
  2. Ady Pountain used to play it Down Under in Sydney all the time back in the 90's!
  3. Pete, this boot looked to me to be vinyl not styrene ... and I stand to be corrected but I think all originals of this , whether stock or demo, are all styrene, is that correct ?
  4. 90 Days in the county jail !!!
  5. Nice one Tony, OK, Gone Away must have been COMPOSED then by Donny Hathaway !!! Do you know a 7" by the Strawberry Alarm Clock called " Barefoot In Baltimore " ? Very soul/jazzy with vibes an' all , very unlike their usual very nice popsike stuff !!!! Incidentally the Shamley label was part of the Uni group too , wasn't it ?
  6. Flip of Lovelace Watkins is a sublime and soulful version of the Impressions "Gone Away" , no wonder as these Lovelace sessions were I believe produced in Chicago with Donny Hathaway (too lazy as I am to pull out the 45 ....) Incidentally, there is on Uni a very nice little pop soul northern dancer by John Fred and the Playboys entitled "Open Doors" .... so best not to dismiss all the not too obvious soul artists in one fell swoop !
  7. https://youtube.com/watch?v=TgWKqJ_4Ubs Super dancer and great to see a clip of this as it wasn't particularly one of Dionne's biggest charting tunes ... off her fabulous Track of The Cat LP recorded in Philly with Thom Bell, I'd love to see soul DJ's really get behind this track, one of her very best dancers with modern/northern appeal
  8. Stevie, if I ever have any slight frustration with the Northern / rare soul scene, it's that too many often overlook the great works of the so called commercial or charting soul artists like Curtis Mayfield , Stevie Wonder , Lamont Dozier, Al Green etc etc which all stand the test of time and deserve repeated plays even 30 or 40 years later, and every listen brings something new each time ...
  9. Well Tone, Seven Days Too Long WAS co-written by J R Bailey and his erstwhile songwriting partner Johnny Northern, was it not ? And to my ears the vocal on Seven Days is not too far removed from J R Bailey's well known vocal style , so perhaps not so mythical as one might imagine ? Especially as there appears to be absolutely no information whatsoever on the identity of Chuck Wood .....
  10. There is a surprisingly good version of Band of Gold by Ronnie Dyson on his first LP , the Columbia LP entitled " If You Let Me Make Love To You... ". It's more uptempo and more "northern" than Freda's original. That LP also has Ronnie's turbo charged version of Little Willie John's " Fever " ....
  11. Mr Dog, please let us have the track listing for the These Kind of Blues LP. I'm very curious !!!
  12. Johnny , why would anyone want to be dancing to old soul records indoors in a club when the outdoors setting is Surfers Paradise / Queensland, Australia and the weather is hotter in winter than it is in ye olde England now going into summer !!!
  13. Betty Everett's record on VJ is NOT the same song as the Major !!!
  14. Me too, always thought he was white, a blue eyed soulster
  15. PM'ed you !!!
  16. I'm very tempted on that Jimmy Ruffin UK Tamla 45, I've had it on his MFP UK budget LP for years, you're right, it is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE !!!!!!!
  17. Well, you can just put stuff on soul source for our edification only !
  18. C'mon Pete , start posting some more clips again , I can't do it all myself .....
