  1. What is also interesting is that Mojo Magazine, whose musical agenda is one that several generations of Northern Soul enthusiasts could relate to in a broad musical sense, has never attempted to cover the Northern Soul phenomenon ...
  2. Yes , that's right Pete and you should also mention the one known copy of the AUSTRALIAN release of Billy Woods on A & M , a demo with the famous Aussie red bullett sticker , got released by Festival when it did a rights deal with A&M/Sussex in the USA and Festival proceeded to release ALL the early numbers in consecutive order ....
  3. Very interesting your comments about the LP's. Can you give more details of what LP's were issued on the label ? I have the Quinn Harris LP which is excellent but I'm curious about any others ...
  4. And of course the superb, turbo charged version by none other than Jackie Lee on his Mirwood LP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. You beat me to it Tony, no prizes for this quiz though , it was easy ..... Let's continue this thread on a different tack , how about worthy cover versions of "Harlem Shuffle" ? I'll start with the Traits version on Garrison also released Down Under on a beautiful Scepter 45 (PS Please nobody mention Mick Jagger ... )
  6. In an instrumental frame of mind at the moment ... and in my humble opinion this was one of the greatest instrumental dancers ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone got a nice 45 for me ?
  7. As a matter of interest Tone, and without doing a google search, I am sure that Joe Tex had a Dial/Atlantic released LP called "Live and Lively ", '68/69-ish , yes ?
  8. What , then , are the rough current market values for the two Human Encounter 45's on Capitol ?
  9. Is the Tony Clarke an original , and is it Mint or EXC + (without cue burn and not jocked to death) ?
  10. Yes, these may have been factors, but also the label was nearing its end and in retrospect LeBaron Taylor was possibly not in a position for business reasons to push and promote the last few releases. While Darrell Banks had kicked the Revilot label off well at the start with his straight ahead Detroit soul , it would have been the funkier psycho soul of the Parliaments that shortly would have been foremost in the label head's mind in terms of sales. Generally speaking too, the music industry in the US was experiencing massive upheaval around the summer of '67, and in particular the sound of choice amongst black america was quickly evolving. Motown now had some serious competition, and the funkier sounds of Stax, not to mention Sly and the Family Stone (Dance To The Music) and the Impressions (We're A Winner) were setting milestones of change in black music taste at that time. Sweet mid-tempo Detroit soul, like Jackie Beaver's effort, simply may not have been what black kids on the street in the US at that time were buying .....
  11. "Every Fella's Girl" is of course the LP only track that is played off this LP. Or is it ? Does anyone know of that track appearing on a 45 ? And is this LP as rare as many people keep telling me it is ?
  12. Yes, and I agree with all the aforementioned posts, Love For My Girl is a super dancer !
  13. And the phrase was very famously used in the Coasters northern classic " Crazy Baby " on Atco.
  14. Glad to hear it's known Steve, but perhaps only in limited circles within the scene, those with good taste and good sense. Was it big at any particular venue and at any particular point in time ? (PS: I also note it's not listed at all in Mr Manship's price guide, for what that is worth)
  15. The seller though is Breck Bunce, a well known ebay seller from Detroit who more often than not comes up with quality soul records, for example I was totally over the moon about winning this Jimmie Delphs 45 from him just a few days ago, I guarantee this will be an absolute monster record once it becomes well known in the right circles, if not already known, listen to the clip below ... .......................... Jimmie Delphs - 'Do You Know What I Mean' b/w inst - Detroit Street Service Inc( I-70)1977. Obscure downtempo soul on the 'Detroit Street Service Inc' label - "Dedicated To The Economic, Spiritual, Mental and Physical Salvation of Humanity" - great mellow production & soulful vocal - audioclip from actual record below. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN
  16. And we should all note Martin that your last played clip is ... Bobby Brown "My Prerogative" !!!
  17. I'm sure that over the years I've seen somewhere, probably on ebay, that Frank Beverly and the Butlers "If That's What You Wanted" got a release on a local Greek label, and with a picture sleeve too ! So that's something that you may want to keep an eye out for if you see any little old Greek ladies having a car boot - or donkey back - sale !!!
  18. So, Duke and Leonard has never really had any major plays previously on the scene ?
  19. Boba, I think you have just hit the nail on the head as to why many so UK soul sellers - including many on this site - are so often bemoaning the lack of sales in recent times. It's quite noticeable how many soul collectors from outside the UK have mentioned to me that they simply won't buy soul records from UK sources any longer, period. And the most often cited reason is the dreaded UK "EX(cellent)" grading, usually based on the Record Collector (UK) system . As you've just mentioned, in the minds of many UK sellers, the absolute lowest grading is a VG !!!! And that more often than not looks like it has been run over by a truck !!! One might ask whatever happened to the GOOD/FAIR/POOR gradings !!! That, coupled with the fact that so many UK soul sellers appear to be to be stuck in a mind-set regarding record values .... a mind-set that says that the value of a soul record will always be what it was at its highest ever point , without regard to current demand or popularity or quantity. These days, unless a record is a one off, or there appear to be only a handful in existence, one is far better off to be patient and wait for a copy to turn up on (US) ebay (even taking into account all of ebay's many faults and pitfalls) and bid on the open world market where the US Dollar is far weaker than the UK pound, but where the grading - generally speaking - tends to be far more conservative and fairer and there is far less occurrence of other nasty factors such as cue burn or worn out record grooves that you often come across with records that have spent 30 or 40 years doing the rounds of UK northern soul collectors and dealers.
  20. I'm sure Pete Smith will jog my memory as it will take me ages to dig the record out of my storage lock up, but I have a beautiful Aussie Astor 45 release of a version of I'm Gonna Run Away done by an English girl, quite reasonable too, think it would have been on Pye in the UK. What's her name then, Pete ?
  21. You're looking at 300 UK GBP for the Aussie Marcia Hines 45 , Mr Dog, and in the same breath I always get asked what the Aussie Gloria Scott 45 is worth these days and I say at the very least 600 UK GBP. The Aussie Gloria Scott 45 is truly an incredibly rare record no matter what the odd dismissive soul has said on this forum in the past .
  22. Pete, you've been very active in recent times yourself buying Aussie label releases on ebay ?
