Interesting Sean, but why would Chess in the US have issued it a second time when it had never been a hit in the first place in the US ? Unless its an early 70's press to cash in on the success at Westbound. I always assumed the latter issue of Denise Lasalle WAS a UK jobbie, mid 70's , Polygram in the UK at that time had Chess didn't they, and they were issuing UK Polydor 45's without centres as well weren't they ? Think I'll also have to dig out my UK Joy Lovejoy from storage which I could swear WAS concave around the centre and very similar to the Denise Lasalle in appearance ? Where's Tony Rounce when we need him ?

Isn't the latter one a UK press from the 70's , no centre? They did the same in the UK with Joy Lovejoy, did they not ?

Frank Elson used to write in Blues & Soul that "Window Wishing" was popular at the Wheel . Heard on a tape a track of hers from '67 called " I Never Knew What You Were Up To" , an utterly brilliant dancer and totally different to her usual Bacharach / David work. LP only ?

Jerry Butler' s version is EVERY bit as good , in its own way. I presume that Jerry's version however rarely gets played because Jerry's is LP only The same Jerry Butler LP also contains the brilliant fingersnapping dancer "One Woman Man"

Very interesting too that most people who were regulars at the Torch have no hesitation in saying that the Stylistics were the best live act to have ever appeared at the Torch amongst many great acts.

Yes, when all is said and done, I believe the Dells should be regarded as the greatest RnB/Soul male vocal group of all time, even ahead of the Temptations. That estimation is based on all possible criteria such as: quality and diversity of the group's recorded work, number of hits, influence, longevity etc etc My all time top ten of RnB/Soul vocal groups goes something like this: 1 Dells 2 Temptations 3 Drifters 4 Impressions 5 Four Tops 6 Isley Brothers 7 Coasters 8 O'Jays 9 Spinners 10 Manhattans Honourable mentions to the Dramatics, Blue Notes, Whispers, Platters, Intruders, Delfonics, Chi Lites.

Mark, as you are a man of good taste, do the best thing and get the original Natural Four LP, all of which is brilliant from start to finish. And make sure you play the LP BEFORE the next jock with the original 45 in his box , as a show of force to both the "couldn't be arsed carrying LP's about" brigade as well as the "you can't play LPs out" brigade !

Don't think so, known chronology on the group indicates Traynor was long gone by '68 when Hung Up was recorded, and IMO vocal on Hung Up is quite different from Traynor.

Nice one Pete, but my understanding was that they initially had Jay Traynor of Up and Over fame on lead .... and then he left to be replaced by David (Jay) Black. But on Hung Up the lead vocal doesn't sound like David Black ...

Yes Simon, and their other one on the label "Running Wild" is equally as good and also deserves to be played more !
