  1. Well here is a great version of "The Snake" as performed in 1967 by West Coast blue eyed rocker Johnny Rivers on a rare video clip from groovy 6T's US TV teen show "The Hollywood Palace". Note too that Johnny Rivers was on the same Soul City label as Al Wilson ... Dig the go-go dancers !!! Download Video Youtube Link
  2. Tony, didn't their first Columbia LP contain sides that they recorded for Deluxe ?
  3. Good innit ... this was when they were working with George Kerr after they left Carnival ... both their late 60's LP's on Deluxe are excellent and hugely underrated.
  4. Download Video Youtube Link Just love this rare colour clip of the Impressions from their Curtom days, from their Young Mods Forgotten Story LP ... look at the white boys backing them up !!!
  5. Download Video Youtube Link Really, this is what soul music is all about ...
  6. Download Video Youtube Link Brilliant and rare promo clip of the Manhattans from 1969 in Central Park, featuring original lead George Smitty Smith who tragically died young and was replaced by Gerald Alston .... Great tune from their Deluxe label period in the late 6T's
  7. Quite like the vocal version though, The Charades "Dreaming Up A World of Fantasy" !
  8. Yep, that's what I thought, but when playing it recently, got a great reaction from the soul crowd, so made me think it's a "just right for today" kind of record ... stylistically not so far removed from Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle" and records like that.
  9. Was this played on the soul scene in the 70's ? Mecca perhaps ? Or has it ever been played to any great degree on the scene at any time since ? Appeared on one of Keb Darge's funk/disco compilation LP's a few years ago, was Keb the main man for playing/breaking this sound ?
  10. Yes indeed, and the LP is even better .... and far far rarer ....
  11. Two LP set when originally issued in the US. "Some" superb tracks, you say ? The WHOLE LP from start to finish is superb ! But then there is a whole section of soul fans who couldn't "be arsed collecting LP's"
  12. Is Volcano's lead singer Gene Faith still alive , and, if so, is he still in the music business ?
  13. As I have had to personally endure the heart wrenching experience of witnessing my own Dad waste away on a downward spiral within a matter of around 18 months, and having seen that Aretha video tribute to Levi that was posted on here last year with Levi in a wheel chair, my guess is that Levi has suffered a stroke or a series of minor strokes over a period of time.
  14. Some of the traditional 60's only UK die hards may recoil in horror , and it's been said before but there is definitely an increasing influence from DJ's from other areas of the black music scene, eg James Trouble, with the effect that northern soul fans in the UK are looking more and more to crossover/modern and even funk. For example, not unthinkable that Keb Darge might return to the northern scene one day but actually play a set of his funk/disco-soul tunes as an accepted part of the northern scene. It's a process that has already been taking place in Europe for some time now.
  15. Not so strange really, RCA distributed Wizard in Australia, and of course Abba were on RCA too. I have a nice Aussie copy of the Marcia Hines 45 for sale, EX condition, 350 UK POUNDS. Feel free to PM me.
  16. What if the rare soul scene evolved/developed in such a way that the central focus of the scene, geographically speaking , was centred somewhere OUTSIDE the UK ; with the biggest (and youngest) crowds, leading collectors and DJ's , best venues and events , most talented dancers located elsewhwere .... Would that be far too unbearable to contemplate ????
  17. Paul, why do you regret selling the 45's and having the LP's ? Better to have the LP than the 45 IMO !!! Take the Carol Anderson LP, not only has Sad Girl, but also a couple of other great dancers and deep tracks not to mention a great cover photo of Carol !!!! SFSLP (Society For the Superiority of LP's)
  18. Yep, Incidentally, Cause You're Mine Now, on the LP, is a FANTASTIC northern/70's dancer

  20. No, Gentlemen Four were on Sonday, distributed by Wand.
  21. No, This Could Be The Night is better ! But most everything he did is good . Best to get the LP which is great from start to finish and puts a lot of big money LP's to shame on sheer music quality alone.
  22. Great tune, and off the top of my head , I know of: The Gentleman Four on Sonday Rosey Grier on ABC/Probe The Masqueraders on Wand The Dynamics on Cotillion All great renditions but I think the Gentlemen Four just shades the others. I think there's other versions too. Anyone ?
