  1. It's a fantastic record, superb uptempo Philly soul , dating I'd say from around 1975, on the Dante label. They were obviously aiming for a Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes type of sound in the vein of "The Love I lost", "Bad Luck" etc. What I would like to see is a photo of the group because they are definitely a white group, or at least the lead vocalist certainly is, but it's a genuine piece of blue eyed soul ; he does a great job with the vocals. So, does anyone have a photo of the group ? Anyone know anything about the Dante label ? I'm making an educated guess here but I suspect that the man behind the label was Ron Dante , well known white Philadelphia pop producer and composer in the 60s and the 70s and the voice of the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" !!!
  2. "Apparantly they're white" ?????????????????? Dear oh dear.... next you'll be telling us the Kings Go Forth are black ! The Millionaires were very definitely black and very very soulful, their discs on Philips and Specialty are well known to soul fans. Blues and Soul magazine, in an early 70's issue - at the time Philips in the UK issued Never For Me on the back of the record's popularity on the northern scene - printed a little piece on them, naming their personnel and history. ... sadly my collection of Blues and Soul magazines is in storage but I seem to recall the article mentioning that a few of the members later went on to be part of another well regarded soul group ... perhaps some other soul sourcers can help here ?
  3. The Boz Scagg's dancer for Northern and Modern dance floors is this one - ITS OVER - off the Silk Degrees LP ... has everything ... just brilliant ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WAV-UnqEHA
  4. "couple of LPs by the Dynamics" ??? Not correct Baz, one LP only by the Dynamics on the Black Gold label.
  5. So much for Columbia's promotional machine ... they've incorrectly attributed the photographs Otis Leavill and Brooks O'Dell !!!!
  6. Any info on the artist ???
  7. And a lot of people don't realise that on the legendary Aussie only 7' of "Too Much Lovemakin" the flip side is the brill "What Am I Gonna Do" ! Double the soul power !
  8. 50 quid easy on the dog rare Aussie red Polydor release - stock copies only - no demos. As Mr Manship would say, it's best and rarest format. Think the Aussie release runs an extra 30 seconds or so at the end as against the UK release.
  9. Back in the 80's a Northern Soul fan played Prince Phillip Mitchell's classic "I'm So Happy" to Sammy Davis Jr , so Sammy recorded this tailor made finger snapper on the Motown label especially for the Northern Soul scene ... packs the floor every time ...
  10. Tony, always used to play this at home off one of that great series of Loma various artists LPs Vols 1-7 , released in the 70's ...
  11. IAN, WOULD BE EXTREMELY INTERESTED TO HAVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE GREATEST SOUL SINGER THAT EVER LIVED : DAVID RUFFIN. ESPECIALLY THE TIME YOU SPENT RECORDING HIM.
  12. Put me on the list at 201 quid
  13. Ian, Having spent many hours poring over every issue of "Black Music" magazine from the 70's, one person who proved to be an immensely influential figure in relation to the course that the Northern Soul scene took in the 70s - especially with the Wigan vs Mecca split - and black music in general in the UK was Tony Cummings. It would be interesting to know your recollections and memories of the man ?
  14. Send it free , we're such nice people and we deserve it !
  15. Jocko, Just curious, what, in your opinion, is the rarest/hardest to find Loma 45 of all, soul or otherwise ? And do you have the Bob & Earl "Everybody Jerk" 45 that we have speculated on before here on Soul Source as to its existence ? Cheers
  16. Exactly how many versions/releases are there of this tune ? You Live Only Once - Imperial Wonders (Solid Foundation) You Live Only Once - The Changing Tymes (AMG) You Live Only Once - Rock n Co (AMG) Any others ? Is Rock n Co the hardest to come across of those three ?
  17. Barry, I really worry about you sometimes ...
  18. Paul , you're right about appreciating the music first, then the dancing will follow But as for: John Legend, Mary J Blige, R Kelly, Brian McKnight, Amy Winehouse even Duffy have all been played out with one of there modern tunes. No "soul" singers in that group of 6 I'm afraid , the first four are Americans who happen to be black but are in reality nothing more than "pop" singers, and the last two are white pop singers who desperately try to sound black ... but fail miserably.
  19. Notwithstanding mention of names such as Duffy, Weller etc ... one of the main questions surely is ... will the film have a contemporary (ie 2008) setting ... or will the setting be some time in the late 60's / 70's ?
  20. Come on, somebody post their superior version of Bobby Paris "Night Owl".
  21. A friend of mine just showed me an old picture of Soul Sam at age 21 ... And at 21 he looked exactly as he does now
