  1. Yep, that's right, Blowfly's version is disgustingly funny, but even more hilarious and comical (and a hell of a lot cleaner!) is the version by Archie Bell and the Drells where Archie turns the lyrics around and laments the fact that Uncle Sam has called him up for army duty just when he's got the biggest record on the planet , so there is poor Archie just ... sitting on the dock of the bay .... !!!!
  2. Anyone got any info on who the artists were ? Who were Stevens & Foster ? Did they record anything else ?
  3. Careful Ian, Mr Manship might even start offering "low doc" loans to down-at-heel soul collectors in order to allow them to bid ridiculous amounts of money on those auction items ...
  4. https://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...A:IT&ih=021 Well , blow me down , have a look at what this copy of the "The Champ" by the Mohawks went for on ebay the other day. Several questions here: * Issued of course on Cotillion in the US, but how many issues in the UK have there been of this record over the years ? The first in the UK was on blue Pama was it not ? * And does this particular UK issue justify the finishing price ? * The item description of this UK issue states "Reggae Version" ? Is this indeed a reggae version by the Mohawks - and is there any other "alternative" version or mix by the Mohawks - other than the original that we all know and love ? Or has this seller just incorrectly described it as a "reggae" record when it is in fact just the original version ? I expect our resident ska / reggae & UK label experts experts Pete Smith and Tony Rounce to add their weight here !
  5. Linda Jones ... the soul singer that that most overrated bit of white pop trash Janis Joplin always wanted to be but never even came close ...
  6. Who said there's a global financial crisis ?
  7. Latin Soul & Boogaloo music is and remains an inextricable part of the northern and rare soul scene ... as well as soul music's rich tapestry in general. Anyone who seeks to deny this fact is an ignorant fool. Old timers often tell me that Hector Rivera's "At The Party" and Cal Tjader's "Soul Sauce" were as popular as any sound on the earliest northern scene, and then throughout the next 40 years various boogaloo tracks have weaved their way in and out of the northern scene. And this debate about white singers is just as stupid ... many of latin soul's greatest vocalists were in fact black (eg Jimmy Sabater) ... that is, if the colour of a person's skin happens to be the way you determine what is "soul" and what isn't.
  8. Just on this Isaac Hayes theme and the adaptation/appropriation of his songs, purely by chance I recently happened to throw on to the turntable the B side of the Pointer Sisters mid 70's funk classic on Blue Thumb - How Long (Betcha Got A Chick on the Side) and found a track entitled "Easy Days" which incredibly is a fantastic dreamy cross-over VOCAL version to Ike's instrumental "Ellie's Love Theme" one of the most loved tunes from the Shaft soundtrack. So Easy Days by the Pointer Sisters is my crossover tip for the moment ! Have a listen: https://au.youtube.com/watch?v=kXduHkUs29o
  9. The Casualeers " When I'm In Your Arms " released on Laurie , superb record ... if you can keep your mind on the music that is ...
  10. The vocal version of Soul Sauce to play is that of jazz organist Shirley Scott !
  11. Also begs the question, was Connie Austin related to the other King label artist of the time - and James Brown alumni - Leon Austin ... "the Mighty Burner" ??? In fact, the plot now thickens a little ... if you read this about Leon's allegedly violent disposition https://stepfatherofsoul.blogspot.com/2005/...-his-house.html and his interesting background https://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/lates...ciatedies.shtml ... maybe just maybe there is a connection between the two artists ??
  12. Like Sean, I've never heard that story about Connie Austin before and I don't think much of note about Connie was contained in Kent's CD booklets on the King label releases Vols 1 & 2. Connie's version of Ball of Fire is superior to Marva's ... but only just. And don't forget the other side of the Connie Austin record , the stomping mover "She Made A Mistake".
  13. There's a nice version of this song by Aussie blue-eyed soulster Robie Porter on the US Diamond label. Didn't Roy Hamilton also do a version of this ?
  14. No , it is definitely Van McCoy , albeit singing in a slightly lower key than usual from his solo recordings.
  15. But with the greatest respect Chris, why does that piss you off ? No one forces you to buy their records, if you don't like their price, or their apparent logic, just don't buy. It's always your choice. Very simple really.
  16. In Australia, "The Night" by Franki Valli & the 4 Seasons was released three times, once on black Aussie Tamla-Motown and on two separate issues on Aussie Mowest, one of which must be stupidly rare, as I have only ever seen the one copy ... mine.
  17. Incidentally, the Aussie release of Tony Drake only exists as a stock copy. MCA (Astor) in Australia never issued demos. The Australian release is certainly in the same rarity bracket as the Gloria Scott 45 & The Jackie Wilson Coral EP (featuring Open The Door To Your Heart) and the Garland Green MCA 45 of "Angel Baby" ...
  18. The Rockin Berries "Land of Love" on UK Pye Guaranteed to go big one day ...
  19. A few years ago the daughter of the lead singer of Soul Bros Inc agreed to sell her last copy of "Pyramid" - she had 5 or 6 copies that her dad had given her to sell and she had been gradually auctioning them off through Ebay. Well, I paid her for the record and she duly sent it me (Down Under) in nothing more than a paper thin dinner napkin and a standard paper post envelope. No cardboard covering , no card board box style mailer , no nothing .... It arrived on my doorstep ... in 16 pieces ... Kiss goodbye to $700 US ...
  20. This is easily my favourite original colour footage of Brenton Wood in classic form from 1968 on Hugh Hefner's classic US TV show "Playboy After Dark". This is the swinging 60's at its grooviest ! Coming to you from the Playboy Mansion !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Watch this ! https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SS_2mkxM73M&...feature=related
  21. I'd like to know whether Maycon ever issued an LP on Earl Connelly as is mentioned on the label on the 7" of Make Up Your Mind ? Anyone ever seen the LP ?
  22. Tony Clarke, of "Landslide" and "The Entertainer" and "Wrong Man" fame, was a soul hero who by all accounts was anything but god-like in real life, and suffered a fate that many would say he deserved. Not much detail though is known on Tony Clarke's life. Perhaps our Soul Source resident Chicago Soul expert Bob (Boba) can give us all the full inside story, eh Bob !
