  1. Careful , he'll start charging for his time .
  2. As long as we get to see it all on a You Tube jobbie !!!
  3. Will this tide of emotion get Butch on to the Forum ?
  4. Took the Fatback Band to get him on. Mind you the Carstairs really is a funk record too ...
  5. This could have been a Northern monster, all the right ingredients, perfect beat, and irresistible on the feet , just like The Bottle ! FATBACK BAND - WICKY WACKY https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=NxwzjyDFSh8 edited by site if use the embedd features it dont interupt the flow
  6. or ... Pete Smith ... This ... Is Your Life !
  7. Anyone out there in support of Butch's set & playlist that Ken is referring to ? If Butch were to pursue that approach with some other like minded souls such as ... Keb Darge for example ... could it re-invigorate the northern scene ? Bring in thousands of ... "young" people onto the scene ? A totally new attitude and approach to northern soul ? Is anyone frightened by all this ?
  8. I think it's time for Pete Smith to have his very own personal thread a la Ian Levine ...
  9. Darryl, do you have any promotional photos of yourself from the 60's that you could post on here ?

    For Sale

So us colonials on the other side of the world can't even ask the question ...
  11. The Minit release is not a re-working of the earlier Keymen release. This misconception has been perpetuated for almost 40 years ... They are different tunes both lyrically and musically. Bobby just happened to give both releases the same title. He would not have had a problem using the old title for the Minit release as the Keymen release from a few years earlier had sunk without trace.
  12. Just stay away from that stuff they call ... "soulful house"
  13. I'll second that. "Songs of the Big City" is one of the great soul LPs, but sadly overlooked even by many soul fans. In fact, IMHO it's Clyde McPhatter's greatest work. It also contains the best version of "Three Rooms and Running Water"
  14. J , only thing is once the 12'' version hits the breakdown after about 2 minutes it just goes on and on for about another 5 minutes right to the end with the chorus just repeating over and over and over again, very tedious IMHO, but I guess that kind of mix may have made sense at the time of release in the mid 70s being aimed at the Studio 54 type disco crowd high on cocaine.
  15. Yes, but the 12" mix is quite different from the 7" single release.
  16. A hypothetical here. Let's just say that a major new weekly allnighter starts up, and, for the sake of the discussion, it is centrally located in either London or Manchester. Let's say that it's a top venue, 1,500 capacity, with all the right facilities. Let's also say that most of the generally respected DJ's play there each week covering the whole rare soul spectrum and pleasing everybody's tastes in soul. The question is: would you attend every week ... more or less ??? No need to comment whether you think such a weekly allnighter would ever work in the present day and age, or that it wouldn't even get off the ground these days for whatever reason. Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ???
  17. George, I take it you are implying that because Warren Zevon and Randy Newman are involved then it probably isn't "soul" related. In actual fact Randy Newman was the composer of more than a few bona fide classic soul tunes from the 60's. He was also a favoured songsmith for many 60's girl group producers. Jerry Butler's "I Dont Want To Hear It Anymore" on VJ is one soul classic off the top of my head that immediately comes to mind, and later Wilson Pickett's storming " Mama Told Me Not To Come " on Atlantic (kills 3 Dog Night's version !). There would be many others if one were to do a bit of net researching ... Here's some others I'll Be Home Lorraine Ellison Friday Night OJays While the City Sleeps Irma Thomas Love Is Blind Erma Franklin Somebody's Waiting Gene McDaniels So I would say to people never to instantly dismiss a record just because Randy Newman is in the credits !
  18. Composed by legends Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the film of the same name "Blues In The Night" released in 1941 and the song was nominated for an Academy Award ! All the info you need to know is right here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_in_the_Night
  19. Johnnie Taylor does a searing version of 16 Tons on his first Stax LP "Wanted One Soul Singer" from 1967, every bit as good as Blues In The Night on the same LP, a track which also started life as a "pop" standard !
  20. And in Australia 1981/2 when I started promoting the first nights.
  21. MARCIA HINES / YOU GOTTA LET GO / AUSTRALIAN DIG IT / MINT- / £175 (sold @auction recently for £260 ish) In Australia, this only came out on Wizard. I believe Dig It is the Italian issue.
  22. Ian, Is there any film footage in existence of the Mecca pre-1977 ?
  23. You never know Pete, it may have got issued somewhere on the continent in the 60's. I've learned never to rule out anything these days. I've always had that Bowie maxi single with 4 tracks including I Dig Everything and Do Anything You Say that got issued in the early 80s.
