  1. A hypothetical here. Let's just say that a major new weekly allnighter starts up, and, for the sake of the discussion, it is centrally located in either London or Manchester. Let's say that it's a top venue, 1,500 capacity, with all the right facilities. Let's also say that most of the generally respected DJ's play there each week covering the whole rare soul spectrum and pleasing everybody's tastes in soul. The question is: would you attend every week ... more or less ??? No need to comment whether you think such a weekly allnighter would ever work in the present day and age, or that it wouldn't even get off the ground these days for whatever reason. Just answer the question: would you attend each week and support it ???
  2. George, I take it you are implying that because Warren Zevon and Randy Newman are involved then it probably isn't "soul" related. In actual fact Randy Newman was the composer of more than a few bona fide classic soul tunes from the 60's. He was also a favoured songsmith for many 60's girl group producers. Jerry Butler's "I Dont Want To Hear It Anymore" on VJ is one soul classic off the top of my head that immediately comes to mind, and later Wilson Pickett's storming " Mama Told Me Not To Come " on Atlantic (kills 3 Dog Night's version !). There would be many others if one were to do a bit of net researching ... Here's some others I'll Be Home Lorraine Ellison Friday Night OJays While the City Sleeps Irma Thomas Love Is Blind Erma Franklin Somebody's Waiting Gene McDaniels So I would say to people never to instantly dismiss a record just because Randy Newman is in the credits !
  3. Composed by legends Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the film of the same name "Blues In The Night" released in 1941 and the song was nominated for an Academy Award ! All the info you need to know is right here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_in_the_Night
  4. Johnnie Taylor does a searing version of 16 Tons on his first Stax LP "Wanted One Soul Singer" from 1967, every bit as good as Blues In The Night on the same LP, a track which also started life as a "pop" standard !

And in Australia 1981/2 when I started promoting the first nights.
  6. MARCIA HINES / YOU GOTTA LET GO / AUSTRALIAN DIG IT / MINT- / £175 (sold @auction recently for £260 ish) In Australia, this only came out on Wizard. I believe Dig It is the Italian issue.

Ian, Is there any film footage in existence of the Mecca pre-1977 ?
  8. You never know Pete, it may have got issued somewhere on the continent in the 60's. I've learned never to rule out anything these days. I've always had that Bowie maxi single with 4 tracks including I Dig Everything and Do Anything You Say that got issued in the early 80s.
  9. UK original please but any country will do as long as it is an original issue and in exc or better condition.
  10. Yes definitely bootlegged AND reissued (legally by Charly). Unquestionably one of the greatest 70s soul LPs , and it's a sad indictment of the Northern scene's obsession with sevens that there are two LP-only tracks "Take A Stand" and "So Rare" that would/should be absolute monsters on the scene.

Great gritty sound, it remains fairly unknown across the scene, does it not ? Mr Manship himself used to tip this many moons ago if I recall correctly ....
  12. What a stark contrast to the "Soulful House" thread ...
  13. "What It Is" by Faith Gage on Black Giant Records Anyone ? Thanks !
  14. Always thought the general consensus was that the northern scene never at any time - even at its peak - alone had the numbers to put a record in the UK charts? Chart commentators have long said that the likes of R Dean Taylor, The Tams, Archie Bell & Drells etc only made it into the charts when youth club DJs and non-strictly soul discos up and down the country picked them up, is that not right?
  15. " is this the future of soul? " No it isn't. Please read the soulful house thread !
  16. Alright then, who IS the oldest bastard on this soul scene, alive and kicking and breathing mind you ... ?
  17. There's a very rare Australian only issued 45 by a blue eyed soulster which absolutely kills Danny Harrison's version.
  18. With respect, this is nothing more than a mildly pleasant easy listening lounge jazz tune from a guy that comes across as an Italian spaghetti western equivalent of Tom Waits. Couldn't possibly call this a "soul" record .... or see any relevance to it appearing on Soul Source ???

My UK copy looks mint , but plays with noticeable background noise all the way through. I would have thought it was dubbed fom disc.

They could make a bloody great Hollywood movie on the life of label owner Don Robey !!!
  21. Soul Source being the world's number one website on all things northern soul , I trust someone on here can get in touch with these various people and see whether they can make what they have publicly available.
  22. I'm with the Dog, Big Maybelle's is the best version !
  23. The question is a very simple one. Does any film / visual footage of the Northern Scene exist before Wigan Casino and the This England documentary ?
