  1. Well said Bri, Chicago's original is the best by far. And if Chicago's "Saturday In The Park" had been released on a tiny Chicago indie label in the early 70's it would have become a northern biggie sooner or later ... that's for for sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwryFOYTKac
  2. One of the major reasons that I love soul music as much as I do is for the very distinctiveness of the voices of most of the great soul singers: whether they be baritones tenors falsettos sopranos contraltos and so on, northern sophistication or southern bluesiness, east or west coast. Tyrone Davis, Eddie Kendricks, Marvin Junior, Linda Jones, Gladys Knight and so on ... as soon as they sing the first note you know exactly who it is ! And Esther Phillips is one of those too , just fabulous !
  3. We've had a few threads over the years here on Soul Source about who is/was the greatest male and female soul/RnB vocalists. While the jury remains out on the the male side , on the female side Aretha is way out ahead of the rest, no question, with only Gladys Knight in the same stratosphere. and then a slew of well respected songstresses like Betty Harris, Doris Duke ... Well, actually, as far as the guys are concerned, no doubt in my mind either, said it before , and I''ll say it again, David Ruffin was the greatest.
  4. What did this fetch when Mr Manship auctioned it ?
  5. Also interesting to keep in mind that until '66 those two Temps LPs and other select Tamla Motown LPs were issued in Australia with the exact same imported UK sleeves (manufactured by Garrod & Lofthouse as stated on the back) ALTHOUGH the label and vinyl were made In Australia .
  6. The LP is creeping up in price because the funk crowd is picking up on it.
  7. I've got this LP and yes it's great and you're looking at upwards of $1,000 US to secure a copy ... if yu can find one ...
  8. 45 or LP Chris ? Many hardened colletors are still unaware that an LP was released on Sundi including "I'm Not Responsible' and several other equally stunning cross over tunes . Far rarer than the 45 ! https://www.popsike.com/ALEX-BROWN-In-Search-Of-Love-SUNDI-LP-Rare-Soul/4030950724.html
  9. What's the current value of this beauty on Stomp Town ?
  10. Dave, John Rowles on an Aussie MCA label 7" from 1969 is by far the best .. and rarest version of this tune ! The Aussie release is a much faster and ballsiermix/take than the US Kapp 7" release .
  11. Tony , Zingara's version is nice but Garland Green's version on Ocean Front is achingly soulful ....
  12. QUOTE : Friends of Distinction – Long Time Comin' – RCA DJ £50 Uptempo rare dance version of Michael Braithwaite Great! The Friends of Distinction record (called Long Time Coming My Way) has absolutely nothing to do with the Mitchell Braithwaite record on Probe which is called "You've Been A Long Time Coming" and it's Mitchell not Michael
  13. 'Tis indeed a tough LP to locate Dave ... I thnk soul collectors still often don't fully appreciate how difficult some of these unique Japanese soul LPs from the 7Ts and early 8Ts are to locate.
  14. Sorry to hijack your thread Bob but another related question for Dean: Dean, did the Temprees track "Whole Bit of Love" off their final We Produce Lp ever find its way onto a 45 release?
  15. The LP is very sought after too .... as is the Bad Breath LP ... with soul collectors and also funk and mod/jazz/latin guys ... you'll do well to get good copies on ebay for less than $250-300 US
  16. Need the vinyl original please, preferably the 12" rather than the LP. Not on 45 to my knowledge .... unless someone has it on some obscure Euro vinyl 45 !!!
  17. The Both Sides Now website not only lists an LP by Joshie Jo Armstead on Truth as having been released but actually gives the release number Truth TRS - 4203. It also lists the John Gary Williams Stax LP 5503 as being "re-released" ( so to speak ) on Truth TRS - 4202. Anyone got 'em ??!! Or seen 'em ??!!

  19. As Northern Soul was an underground scene in the UK, it has remained so in Australia. Moving over here from the UK as most of us did, it could take a while to settle in and many weren't aware there was a scene here. Particularly before the internet became part of our daily routine. I think there are lots here in Sydney who don't know yet! Maybe we'll find them this year. The Australian National is an annual event and is held in a different city every year. Last year it was held in The Gold Coast and I accepted "The Baton" for the event to be held in Sydney this year. - 2010 We have been carefully selecting venues - which must have sprung wooden floors! As this is arguably one of , if not the, the biggest rare soul event in the world outside the UK, I trust the that moderators might allow one the liberty of posting this in the main section of the site because of its significance. http://www.sydneysou...soul-downunder/ So many reasons for you all to come ... Australia is one of the few countries to have avoided the GFC ( the global financial recession , stupid! ) so this is a good opportunity to really come "darn south" and enjoy the good times with soul. The sun will be beating down on Bondi Beach and the Barmy Army wil be down in force to watch England get completely stuffed in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane on 25 - 29 November 2010. So you might as well combine your Soul Trip with an Ashes tour and try to forget the lamentable performance of England at the World Cup !
  20. would love a soundclip of this!! BAZ A Was it "(We Are) Christian People" by Andre Crouch & the Disciples on Liberty 7". Think Ian Levine raved about it in one of his columns in Black Music in the mid 70's, saying it was a Mecca spin ....
