Lillie Bryant Meet Me Half Way (Monarch Test Press)
Sunnysoul replied to Rick Scott's topic in Look At Your Box
The Discogs entry states : "Founded in Harlem, New York by Jack Taylor, a purported gangster, it initially operated as a soul and R&B label from 1957 to 1972, primarily in New York, but also in Detroit, Michigan after OC Tolbert joined the label during the late 1960s." -
This so called "rare soul scene", including the way people dance, has been changing and evolving since the early 60's mod movement. It will continue to do so for as long as it lasts. Strictly from the dancing perspective, who set the original standard ? Was it those iconic figures of the 60's/70's such as Booper Matchy Gethro Caesar etc ? Then came Stafford and the post-Wigan world in the 80's when there were more mid-temp sounds and RnB which demanded a different kind of physical movement ... as did "modern soul" which became an essential part of the scene. There was a different attitude within the scene in almost every respect. Then since the 90's and the popularity of weekenders, for many, particularly the older members, it has become more of a social scene rather than dancing all night being the prime motivation for going to events. So that has influenced things enormously as well. As for dancing and publishing on social media and the "inner self", the obvious example that comes to mind is Levanna. Her first few dance/music videos on Youtube caused a sensation which were loved by many but inevitably also had a number detractors who thought she was commercialising the scene and who also thought she would be a "fly by nighter" who would disappear from the scene in no time. Clearly not ! Levanna loves the music, loves the scene, and is happy to show and tell the world about it by posting up on social media. And Levanna's own dancing style is great too but different from previous dancing styles on the scene. And she dances the same way when attending events as he does in her videos, depending on what style music of soul is being played of course. Whether some like it or not, Levanna and others such as Jordan and Charlotte and Sally and Pops represent the rare soul scene for today and in to the future and that will only be a good thing.

Surely if you need a nominal starting point, it would have to be those iconic UK Capitol releases starting in 1966 !!! No doubt about who or what they were aimed at : "DISCOTHEQUE '66 SERIES " !!! In other words, UK teenagers dancing to soul and RnB music !

Well here's something. The 12 July 1975 issue of Billboard Magazine actually carries a brief review of the Innersection record ... and it's a positive review at that. At least this now gives a fairly close release date for the record ...

On the face of it, perhaps one of the obvious sources of potential information would have been the producer of the record , Tom Nixon, who had a reasonable amount of success with Stax Records in Memphis in the early 70's, in particular with the Stax subsidiary We Produce label with producer/songwriter Josephine "Jo" Bridges and The Temprees. Nixon, incidentally, also spent time at Motown in the 60's and co-wrote Earl Van Dyke's legendary "6 By 6" ! The problem is that Tom Nixon is a real mystery man. Other than when his name and Jo Bridges' name came to the public's attention briefly in 2008 when Alicia Keys had a hit with a sample of an old Temprees record which he and Bridges wrote, virtually nothing is known about him personally. His producing and song writing credits appear to have ceased by the mid 70's when Stax went under; that is, except for The Innersection record (which most would agree sounds post 1975 at least) and another obscure release by a female artist in 1978. After that, nothing. In fact, in his book Soulsville USA, author Rob Bowman states "Tom Nixon was the only major figure at Stax who over the course of eleven years of research I was unable to locate ...". And sadly, Jo Bridges only passed away last month in December 2022 at the age of 74. She may have been a mine of information not only about Nixon and possibly Innersection but also Stax Records as she was a fairly prominent figure in the Stax operation. So, hopefully, someone on here can come up with some information on Innersection and the group 5 label ...

PM'd you on Monday -
The well run, friendly events (big and small) with good music policy will survive and thrive ... and the not so good ones, as described in the first post above, will soon disappear and be quickly forgotten as if they never existed to begin with.. Nothing has changed, it's always been that way.

Clocked a what ??? !!! Is this some sort of secret language ??? !!! -
and from 45cat website: "Comments and Reviews" mickey rat - 6th Sep 2017 Scratch my 4 years old guess that this is Dolores Hall. Latest edition of Ferdie Gonzalez' Disco-File indicates group members were Shirley Allen, Doretha Moody and Loretha Moody who were also known as The Queen Tones."
-
Well Robb if you do a quick search on Discogs you'll find this: "Dolly And The Fashions Profile: Dolly & The Fashions were a trio from Los Angeles, USA, two sisters Dorothea & Loretha Moody and their cousin Shirley Allen." That's all ... but it's a start !
-
The current interest in the record is for the other side ... a ballad ....
-
Mick, you mean Bobby Hutton ... not "Bobby Herb"!!!

Yes, let's have more stories, info and especially PHOTOS of Catacombs era 1969-1972
