  1. I think it is. is outing on Downey gives Barry White the writting credits if I remember rightly
  2. Stomper again I think you are partly right. This whole thread is about knocking things that did fill dancefloors at one time. I too see a distinction between Northern and rare soul, which is why I seperated the two in my post. Whoever was the first to spin the Futures in a Northern room didn't know what dancefloor reaction it would get, a feeling I am all too familiar with BTW. I question the choice of this as an appropriate sound for a Northern room even before a reaction, good, bad or indifferent, from dancers can be gauged. They obviously had the courage of their convictions, I just wonder how many other cases they need to have taken into consideration
  3. Danny you're right up to a point. I would say that where the line is drawn is a matter of opinion. Hence the differences of opinion about some of the suggestions on here about what should and shouldn't have ever got a play. My point is that if the scene is gonna have some integrity (no Aretha Frankilin pun intended) then the fact that people dance to it a record cannot be the sole arbiter of whether or not it belongs on the Northern or rare soul scene.
  4. Who are you and what have you done with the real Mr Smith
  5. I also have been against the playing of the futures from day one and am not jumping on any band wagon. I don't begrudge anyone enjoying a record either once a month or twice a week. I don't begrudge my neighbour enjoying Motorhead's 'The Ace of Spades' either. Just because some people like it doesn't make it Northern. As previously discussed myself and Pete Smith share a love of Bowie's music (only his early stuff in my case) but I would not dream of playing 'I Dig Everything' though I'm sure I would not be the only person in the room that liked it and it is rare but it aint Northern and it aint soul. Just like the Futures! The litmus test to distinguish soul from disco is add in some of those electronic 'poo poos' ala meco and if they fit in with the track it's disco IMVHO.
  6. I think there are so many brilliant records that could never make a come back. Most of them because they have never gone away. Sometimes, no strike that - all the time I wish some of them would disapear for 5 or so years then perhaps they would elicit the special responce that I get when I hear some fantastic tune I'd nearly forgotten
  7. the futures absolutely couldn't agree more no place in a northern room or a rare soul room for that matter. Its disco not that bad as disco but not northern and not rare soul.
  8. I may have suffered from a chemically induced memory schism on the white plains but wigan 78ish I think. Someone will know - about same time as pet clark I think. I though babe ruth was released post midnight 31st dec 1969?
  9. Elusive - Babe Ruth My Baby Loves love - White Plains Sign of the Times - Petula Clark How did they get played in the first place
  10. No contest YDWMN would win hands down in my book especially if they were all new discoveries. It just suffers from being played to often
  11. It appears there aren't any. Well not if you are looking for a general concensus that a record can even be classed as Northern. Perhaps the real answer is the number of unique tracks listed in Tim's and woodchip's US price guides plus woodchips soon to be released British price guide ohh and you better add in all the records played at Prestatyn, the Wilton, Lifeline etc that aren't in the guides. Ohh and nearly forgot everything I play that I class as Northern
  12. Well Steve I see the photo of the 'No Boots' sign turned out well. Shame not all of the DJ's had that policy I caught the Linda Jones on heartbeat but just thought that would be it then the Teen Turbans really threw me class track hand't heard in ages. BTW How did the other pic's turn out? P.S. if you read this tonight (mon) I've got another nine boxes of stuff from the U.S. and need some help looking through 'em. Just give me a ring.
  13. I won't bother posting on this thread as Donkey read my mind
  14. I Remember Neil Jones buying a 45 (my heart Needs A Break I think ) and it had a number written on it in biro. The number turned out to be his extention number at work
  15. Thanks for the info Guys reliable as always, Cheers Ged
  16. My bank manager:fool: hopes I don't come back with Sam Dees Lonely For You Baby, Rose Batiste 'I Can't Leave You', Dean Courtney LYJCWA or Cynthia and the Imaginary Three 'Thats what I am (Without You)' otherwise there no point taking them.
  17. Can any one shed any light on the 'Hense Forth Music Co' Release of this (L.A. 1010)? I know the 'Highland' one is about £100 or so but I didn't know it was out on Hense Forth all help appreciated. Ged
  18. Can't remeber what I danced to last let alone the first thing I danced to First soul record I bought tho was 'Shotgun' Jnr Walker my older sister had loads of early Motown in the 60's but not shotgun so had to buy it meself.
  19. Never really got into anything else on a buying front, never sold my collection but in the late 80's when I was running pubs I didn't get out and about much really. When I first go into the scene tho I did have everything that Bowie had recorded up until that point '75 ish. So I was destined to be a collector even then. I sold my Bowie singles collection in about '82 and got £50 for the lot. I was ripped off really and it put me off selling for a long time. Once the 'northern' bug bit me it never went away even if it was just tapes in the car when I couldn't get to venues.
  20. I've played it out on more than on occasion even had some of the modernistas up dancing to it. I like it better than the maze version. Not sure that just 'cos something charted that it can't be played specially to the modern crowd. Ace Spectrum DSNE got to #5 in the charts stateside.
  21. Billy, Sadly not though I know where there is one? The guy sent me the sound file to prove it but won't he sell. I've had some good stuff from him in the past tho, for the moment tho his name escapes me for some reason Cheers Ged
  22. Well this topic just wont lie down though if I had put politics in the title I'm sure there would have been more comments. You can stop ringing me now I know this scheme is a non starter, in fact I knew that when I posted the topic as you will see from the original post and the records mentioned it was generated some time ago with tongue firmly in cheek. We kinda have these drunken debates (though I'm always sober being the driver ) and they have led to the ideas such as 'Northern Big Soul Brother' where we debated who would be the best people on the scene to put into a room together and what tasks would we set them. Some of you will have seen the 'Fantasy Northern DJ league' that we published in 'In the Neighbourhood' fanzine that led to comments on RS's radio show about the £8.00 value of Ginger Taylor, complaints from some DJ's who we missed out of the league and most suprisingly of all a number of completed entries . How these people thought we would know if any of the DJs played something at a venue that had already been played that night so we could dock them some points was beyond me or even how we would count the number of people on the dance floor for every DJ's set at every venue to allocate them a score. The original post was intended to lighten the mood that was darkening with one thread having stooped to name calling and personal abuse around this very subject. When I did it I did expect some (good natured) stick or banter (ala Pete's initial posts), I did expect some people to wonder if I was serious. I didn't expect everyone to think I was setting up a Northern Soul equivalent of the 'Moonies' and people to start ringing me to remonstrate. I guess I need to be even more 'off the wall' (is that possible I wonder ) if I don't want you to take me too seriously. My thoughts on 'Northern Big Soul Brother' I'll keep to myself
