I'm suggesting the reverse in fact. I think that the venue owners have their own reasons for not wanting to continue nights - think they can do it themselves, don't take enough money over the bar, take too much money over the bar (if they just manage the venue and don't like work), haven't got, for whatever reason the correct licences, dont like the music, don't like the promotor, don't like the punters could be these or any other reason. Its just easy to say to a promotor we can't do them any more the council have had an anonamous letter. So no conspiracy different reasons at each venue I suspect.

Pete, You miss the point here. Under the new licensing regime, applications for which had to be in last month, objections can only be lodged if they directly relate to one of the four pillars of the Licensing act 2003. i.e. Prevention of Crime and Disorder, Public Safety, Protection of Children From Harm or Prevention of Public Nuisance. It is fair to say that local residcents can complain about a 'Public Nuisance' if the noise etc is excessive but under the act premesis are guaranteed, under a system called 'Grandfathering' (Don't ask me why its called that ) to get what they already have. There isn't the opportunity to hear objections it's a rubber stamping issue. Given that the venue is therefore legally guranteed to be granted what it had when it made its application (last month) come the new regime on November 24th. Why would the council who will administer the new regime and also administer public entertainment licenses seek to revoke a PEL that will be reinstated in November. I think there is more to this than meets the eye. Potentially the venue has a renewal date on its PEL that falls between now and November and has therefore chosen not to renew it. Councils are looking for a full years fees (in some cases £20,000+) even though the PEL will be obsolete come November 24th so outlets in this position have chosen not to renew and save the costs. As i said I don't know the full details but an anonamous letter doesn't quite work as an explaination particularly during this transitional period between the two licensing regimes. This is markedly different from the CIS / Ukrainian club as a anonamous letter to a committee at a club could lead them to pull an event in their own venue but losing a PEL due to an anonamous letter just doesn't happen.

I remeber being at the Stafford Reunion with Malc Worsley and Roly Ferguson. When we came to leave Roly pointed out that his jacket was missing from where he had left it. Malc went into one he was asking at the bar wanting to see the manager. Roly was bemused saying 'whats' he making such a fuss about it's only a jacket and it's not even his' I said yes but it was on top of his sales box and thats gone too. It turned up someone, Dave Thorley I think, had put them both behind the decks. All turned out well but Roly thinking Malc was making such a fuss about his jacket was real quality .

Add to these three the one at the ukrainian club in Manchester and it appears there is a pattern Under the new licensing regime letters like this will be ignored as they will be deemed "Frivolous or vexatious" the loss of a late dancing licence (PEL) at the moment is a real puzzler The venue will have its application in for it's new licence to start in November and if it isn't making any changes to its operating plan will be granted with no opportunity for objections to be heard as it will just be doing what it has always done. There is another explaination not sure what that is but it isn't an anonamous letter.

Mark, I can remember when I used to be out at at least three venues and sometimes four or five over a weekend and that isn't that long ago. I haven't ventured out since Soul or Nothing and only did one venue that weekend. Anyway back to the situation at Junction 11 isn't this the same as happened to George Hunt? the owners of the venue thinking they could do better? Not sure how that is panning out now.

I can remember DJing at one Hull soul night, well I say remember, I can only remember that the venue was in the City Centre, and was the haunt of the local scooter crowd it was a Bass pub I think. It will have been '96 '97 or so. I was working up there and had a sales box in the boot of me car and they let me do an hour or so. It was 2 mins walk from the train station I ended up back at someones flat in Hessle gassing til morning and left with a copy of Mark IV - 'just another guy' as a freebee. Thats how people were back then.

I read this thread and then the Edward Hamilton boot on ebay thread and feel the scene has changed a great deal in the last two years or so. I can remember a time when you could be stuck hundreds of miles from home (Yate for me on one occassion) and someone would look out for you offer you a bed, a lift a loan basically anything to help. These people are still around but there are more and more willing to take advantage. Where will it end? Not sure I want to be around to find out. Disillusioned of Blackpool

Why has this taken off again all of a sudden? It is a class tune but it just seems to be on everybody's wants list at the mo. Who is spinning it? or has it come out on a CD? I was offered £350 only last week for mine not that I'm saying thats the price because I think that is too high but I know I'd struggle to get another so I'm hanging on to it. One I'd be more than glad to hear out more often

Falling (or for that matter) rising values are mostly irrelevant if your aren't selling. I only sell things I have more than one copy of and sure I want to get a good price but if prices fall they fall just means it takes longer to pay off the bills for other acquisitions. I'm sure some of my collection will have dropped in price when I croak and Margaret comes to sell them, probably by big bucks, but not sure it'll make much difference to me then.

Have to say I still like this record the horns are fantastic. I do recognise though that it has had its day but then so have loads of other things that still get hammered at oldies nights why should this be any different. As for someone buying it well I've paid big money for stuff some (most ) people dont like. Its my money (well it's the bank managers really but who's counting )

Free water isn't a LEGAL requirement. However the compliance with the 'Safer Clubbing' guide may be a condition on the venues public on licence / club registration certificate (issued by the magistrates courts) or Public Entertainment Licence (issued by the Local Authority) under the current system or a stipulation in the outlets operating plan under the new licensing system (all combined and under the control of the Local Authority from November). More and more areas are now running accreditation schemes along the lines of 'Best Bar None' in Manchester which give a recognised accreditation for good practice including free water being available and the Home office is currently investigating the possibility of making entry into an accreditation scheme such as BBN compulsory. Until then if it isn't in the operating plan then there will be no compulsion for the venue to supply it. Having said that there is always MORAL obligation to supply it. I know we had real problems with security at the Winter Gardens confiscating water as well as vodka, wine etc we managed to resolve it but it took some doing. We didn't need people to complain we knew right away this was a problem it took us two events and two meetings with the management of the venue to sort it out.

Covers 33 will make you a custom made 'full flight' case at a very reasonable price. Not sure they can be beaten on quality or price skimp on the cash at your peril. I think the £30 ones you can open them with any set of keys or a lollipop stick If you want to frighten yourself value the contents of a 200 box (even 200 £5 boots) and then think about the wisdom of using a £30 box to keep them secure.

Yes he did and released it in '68 with TT doing his version in '69 I was just saying UB40's labour of love was an album of covers of songs they loved and it was the TT version they grew up with.
