  1. Fantastic tune I have sold both an issue and a demo of this in the last 6 months and kept one of each too. Should be played more me thinks.
  2. That haunting name 'Bob Slater' never knew him but really do wish he hadn't wrote his name on every single he ever owned both sides as well He had some real quality tunes loads of these ended up in Records and Relics in Blackpool he must have had a massive collection and can't have realised that much for it knowing the stories about what people bought things off Records and Relics for and they must have been making some profit.
  3. I think it has always been too rare to be that big but I fell in love with it on first hearing. I don't usually play it but gave it an outing when on at Soul or Nothing, thought they were the right crowd to appreciate it. Another underplayed underappreciated oldie there are sooooooo many
  4. Pound off for turning up in 'Blue' is to put off the 'Reds' after all you can't put on the flyer '£1 extra for Utd fans" Soul and singles and some selected LP tracks
  5. https://cgi.ebay.com/DON-VARNER-45-rpm-on-Q...1QQcmdZViewItem An original issue on ebay now. Boot is as has been described white with black writing almos a negative image of the orig issue. Never heard of a white demo but as ady says never say never. Boot on ebay too https://cgi.ebay.com/Northern-Soul-Don-Varn...1QQcmdZViewItem
  6. 'Always' is a bit of an exageration certainly not before George Hunt (and Others) got a number of 25 count boxes from the States. Should be less now I guess, rarely go a week without seeing one or more for sale. There are plenty of so called £60 records you never see from one year to the next. Maybe they are underpriced rather than Danny Moore being overpriced
  7. Bought mine at the Casino in 78 ish so I knew it before then. Can't remember what I paid but it was relatively expensive then £20ish I guess. Can't for the life of me remember who was playing it though I was a bit of a Pat Brady follower but may not have been Pat. So all in all a clear as mud as usual
  8. Sold my (Contact) copy last year had it from a new release but never really liked it that much one of those records Sandy Mountain put away for me. Someone asked me if I had copy whilst I was DJing at The Winter Gardens I agreed a price never expecting the guy to send for it but he did so I let it go. Since then though I've been asked for it a couple of times (isn't that always the way) so I guess its right style / tempo for now. Not a bad record but to me just not that special but certainly not a 'Laughter' inducer by any stretch of the imagination.
  9. One Gold Piece is the top tune for me run a close second by Dream My Heart. I should be saying No Other Way and Guess Who Loves You as I've got them But can't deny how good the Prophets and Shirley Edwards are
  10. Funny you should say that Mandy. Gaz put this on a tape for me way back in the early eighties. Some craking stuff on there including the superb 'It used to be' by Jimmy Burns on Tip Top. The sounds that passed through his and Bernie Goldings hands at the time just don't bare thinking about.
  11. £1100 to think it was given away as a freebee. I know when I ordered (and paid) for mine it took nearly seven weeks to arrive. I don't mind saying was sweating a little. I dont think the 'Get a job' Album should be that dear it's a compilation, kind of a greatest hits album. But then i thought the 45 was only £700 so what do I know
  12. The LP that 'Not me Baby' came with was called "The Original and New Silhouettes '58/'68" I bought just the 45 about three years ago for $400ish nice and minty in a Goodway sleeve aswell but I think it books at about £700 now. If your sure it is the right LP and that it has the 45 with it and If you can get it for less than that snatch their hand off.
  13. I can't recall ever playing the flip. But funnily enough I had a request for it a Lytham last time out but it wasn't in my box. I have committed to putting it in and playing it next time out, I was of course gonna play the flip first just to check but if big daddy say its a goodun that good enough for me. Mine's dark blue and silver btw.
  14. Johhny Barnes - 'Begining Today' AMC Can't find anyone that knows it even. Edward Hamilton 'Cool Calm and Collected' Audio Disc Acetate never got a release as far as I know so may be a genuine one off Love em both the Johnny Barnes is a bit early for some but the vocals are superb.
  15. On opening lines a real quality tune with such a naff opening line is Hoagy Lands 'Do you know what Life is All About' it goes 'I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, you know that I know, and I'm telling you all that I know. Lyrical genius it aint but what a tune.
  16. Welcome on board Adrian. It gets a bit heated on here sometimes but we are all basically soul fans so never take any of us too seriously.
  17. I had a long and drunken chat with him two years ago at the Metropol Hotel at the NEC. He had presented the BEDA awards and stuck around for drinks after. Nice bloke and so into music. BEDA only two weeks away not sure who's doing the presentations this year.
  18. How do you make writing in a card last for 3 whole minutes?
  19. Just a quick note to say you can find out who is safe and well after Katrina (music wise any way) on the following link. Has anyone had any contact with collector / dealer Kris Talikowski as he's not on the list. Can't find out anything still hoping he's safe and well. https://www.wwoz.org/music.php
  20. Well jazzy I may have to rethink my future bidding strategy on your ebay sales Maybe I should just offer to quadruple what you paid for stuff. A 300% mark up of 40 cents for a 10 cent record should be fair enough i think
  21. Reminds me of the time I was asked 'can you play something fast these are all too slow' so doing my best to please I stuck on the Vondells. Low a behold the young lady in question didn't dance so when the track finished I promptly got on the mike and apologised for not understanding that she hadn't meant 'play something fast' what she had meant was 'play something I know' If she had asked for 'there was a time' at that venue I probably would have played it but it would have stuck out like a sore thumb with the rest of my set.
  22. Geoff, I'm gonna be careful how I word this following my post yesterday. I think that Kev has guys he knows / trusts DJing for him as we do at the Winter Gardens and this includes you of course. Kev has added some new names over the last couple of years and Butch for example is a great addition to his stable. I, just like any other collector come DJ love playing, at big events but as you know its as much about relationships as anything else and you have to want to work at these relationships. Some would call it 'crawling' or worse I don't see it as that it is 'networking' which most businessmen do all the time. In fact I do it all the time at work so see my time on the scene as time away from the constant work on building relationships. I think that Kev could do worse than speak to local people even if he doesn't book them I know the fuss that was made when a new venue was launched in Stoke, Kev's long term territory, but now he has two weekenders in our area and hasn't looked for the support he'd get if he wanted it. He did book Roly for the forth room at the Cala Gran about four years ago I seem to remember. I'm convinced that there were more people out at soul do's around Blackpool on Saturday night than would have been the case had the Norbreck not been on there's no doubt about that. I am also convinced that the turnout at Lytham was higher than it would have been if the Norbreck hadn't been on strange but I think the publicity for the Norbreck whetted peoples apetite but some of them chose to go to Lytham Academy. So as I said in my post the clash undoubtedly did us some good. As for the tunes as you and I both know Sue books the DJs at Lytham and Steve and I concentrate on original vinyl but guests play what they want. This is a small do we all donate our time to in order to raise some small amount of cash for cancer relief we don't major on that nor do we major on 'Original Vinyl' it just happens that that's the way me and Steve DJ. In fact I did stop a couple of tunes being played on boots / re issues call them what you will because I had the originals in my box and I think thats fair enough. I think both you and I have the same approach I just think if people are interested in finding DJ's with the approach and attitude we adopt they can. If they aren't well theres not much we can do about it except get working on those relationships which for me is a bit too much like work. See you at Salwick next week you still owe me a fiver BTW Ged
  23. Jason, Every credit for your work on this looks like a mine of great info. You university types must plenty of time on your hands or is this official university work?
  24. Better to suffer the earache than to have copies of Gwen Douglass posted to work and then leave them in the boot in the baking heat. Warped to hell Still never mind got another one now
