  1. Shocked of Blackpool
  2. If there was a suitable other venue you'd probably have a night on there as well
  3. They must be mad. The real business issue here is displacement. The SU at Leeds Uni had a one month trial last year it cost them over £20,000 bottom line compared with the same month the previous year purely because people can (and do) go elsewhere to smoke. That was why there was a real push for a level playing field across different outlets. It will certainly cost the council bookings until the policy is everywhere and it may cost you some punters mate. But surely you will have gained a discount on the hire of theroom to compensate Good luck in the meantime anyways
  4. 2072 I hope
  5. Turning a blind eye will not be an option for the Licensee of the premises the Fine will £2000 per offence so if the EHO walk in on an enforcement visit and find 20 smokers that's a cool £40k. The big operators are now ensuring that operating procedures make it clear to DPS's that they are responsible and will have to meet all fines personally. If I was a DPS I'd rather stop you smoking than take the risk. Bound to have an effect on numbers. Ged
  6. This is as good a thread as any to ask who knows of how many copies there are of: Johnie Barnes - Begining Today on AMC??
  7. I played Frank Howard at Lifeline. Mind you I think I played nearly everything in my box in those two and half hours
  8. Thats the one. I first heard it at (ironically) TOTW and bought mine around that time. I guess about '82 only ever seen one other. Perhaps thats why its forgotten.
  9. I'll be in the car on the way home so I'll miss it not that I know what channel 'Dingle TV' is on sky anyway. More upset to be missing tommorow night. I'm sure you'll have a good one I'd wish you luck but you won't need it.
  10. Cheers Ted, £50 not that rare then. Funnily enough as soon as I read Joyce Bond I remebered her name . I must be 'over tired' when he mentions it as I always forget her name.
  11. Cheers Gene, Been a good thread this certainly got me thinking anyway. The link did throw up some fine examples of coloured vinyl one offs. Ged
  12. There is a female version of Mr Soul (you'd never guess called Mrs Soul) on British. Roly Ferguson is always on about it. He's told me loads of times who its by and how hard he has looked for a copy even though its fairly 'cheap' in the RC price guide he can't get one anywhere. Someone on here must know it (have a copy). Ged
  13. This debate R&R vs R&B vs Soul is futile as far as I'm concerned. When many of these records were recorded they were aiming to get into the R&B charts stateside. If you want to find listings of soul records in the states you could do worse than start with Tim Neelys R&B guide. Why do some British people want to pidgeon hole records like this? Take Dean Barlow most definately an R&B record in every sense of the word doesn't mean you have to like it but if you don't it doesn't stop being R&B. It is not surprising some of these sound like R&R as R&R is the white establishments rip off of R&B. If you don't like a record thats fine but its genre doesn't change. I'll get my tin helmet
  14. I seem to remember having the Boss tones - Mope itty Mope on Boss 501 in both black and seperately in red vinyl the red one looked unplayed (i.e. Brand New) but it was identical in all other respects to the black one I assumed it was a boot. I know it came out on Boss 401 later curiously and did think for a while 401 was the first release. Maybe the red one was a limited issue anyway it went in a trade some time back so I'll never know. Still surely this happened with soul 45's? Any idea Gene? Ged
  15. Yes and Betty's version of Unlucky Girl. The absolute best version by a mile pure class Ged
  16. My understanding is that many boots (Re Issues) of rock and roll / dowop 45's were put out on coloured vinyl and this was the only difference from the originals as they used the original stampers. Surely this teqnique will have been used for soul 45's as well? I have a few scatered about. Anyone know if the Red Vinyl Astra copy of the Volumes - Gotta Give Her Love is legit? I always thought it was a boot but JM had in one of his price guides at £100 Qulaity tune I play on the American Arts release but keep both because I'm not sure about the legitimacy of the Astra one. Ged
  17. I did hear many moons ago ( and took it with a big pinch of salt) that Scratchy was the source of the term 'scratching' or was it the other way around? If you play the vocal bit backwards it sounds exactly the same as forwards. Very early use of this technique either way.
  18. And the Orwell before that from memory Barry
  19. For me there isn't a soul record that I'd rather NOT own than own. So I guess there aren't any that get me so wound up as to list em on here. A lot of what has been listed here I like or have danced to or both. Mind you the ones I don't like aren't soul anyway.
  20. Not as much as it used to Dan it's currently in my play box along with Eddies My Name funnily enough but I haven't played either one for ages. I did see a copy change hands at BIDDS last week can't remeber the price tho. I may give EMN a spin now if Ady is pushing it. Ged
  21. The Steelers - Walk On By this got the proverbial 'haven't heard that played out for years' when I span it at BIDDS. Similarly at Soul or Nothing The Kittens - Gotta Be Love and at Soulsville all dayer The Volumes - My Kinda Girl. At Lifeline I played Jefferey Allen - Dilly Dilly only to be told it is currently covered up so must definately have been forgotten since it was played in the early '80's It's nice to play at venues where you slip tracks like these in and they're appreciated. Ged
  22. When Tim played "She's Fire" at Lifeline he anounced it as "the world's rarest Norther Soul record" not sure how he quantified that statement but he was steaming at the time
  23. Hi Warren, My old copy now resides with Flanny (brisoul). It's vinyl can't remember the deadwax markings tho Not been booted to my knowledge. If you send Flanny a PM I'm sure he'll let you know the details. Never really liked it to be honest came to me in a job lot. Ged
  24. Jo what makes you a big name in my book is that Simon's comment doesn't apply to you
  25. It's true ebay isn't what it was 10 - 12 years ago but you can still find the odd thing poorly or just wrongly listed and bag a bargain. For me soul specific auction sites are great as far as they go but they are different from ebay. Soul auction sites are like trawling boxes at soul dos Ebay is more like a record fair. I know where I've got the biggest bargains
