  1. What about Donna Hightower 'Ain't that Love' Capitol 1958
  2. Came out on Jameco as well. There are two Carrie issues different colours not sure of the price difference. some one on here should know.
  3. To me their best recording of the lot is 'Make Ends Meet' it's the flip to 'You're Gonna Make Me Cry' the northern monster. Make Ends Meet is not in any way northern but the vocals are so so soulful and the lyrics superb. Believe it or not I bought it for this side not knowing YGMMC was on the other. What a pleasant suprise.
  4. Was playing this about three years ago. Not much responce tho Superb cheapy IMO
  5. There is a record shop in the centre of St Ives not that far away. My copy of 'The Panic is On' came from there in the mid 70's it's still there but its a real messy shop to look through.
  6. All the best Nige for a speedy return to your usual top form. Was playing one of your CDs in the car today but I won't let that stop me wishing you all the best. Seriously tho get well soon
  7. I agree Andy you selling your records and closing your venues is a good idea but unlike you I think it is quite practical too. Please can I have first look at your sales list
  8. By "First" name I thought I was the only one that did that. With some band names particularly it saves confusion. There in bookcases, DJ boxes, Sales Boxes and Cardboard boxes in record room and two other bedrooms. I will sort them out when I retire.
  9. So maybe thats why the piano didn't burn - it was from the titanic
  10. I'd say Linda Jones is leading so far. But a poll with the ones already mentioned on it would sort it out I guess. Over to you Mr. Collins.
  11. I'd have given that for it I think on auction he'd have got a lot more. Mind you he is a Crystal Palace fan :fool:
  12. I did Gareth after a long long search. Could have sold it for £2k more than once but after the time it took me to get it its not on the market. I agree the backing is not the best and the lyric is a little weak but the whole is better than the some of the parts somehow. I still have an army of people looking for another one without any joy - so far.
  13. Mine 1) Linda Jones 2) Pat Lewis 3) Mary Wells
  14. Point taken Winnie. I was just pointing out that for me it certainly doesn't fit into the 'underplayed' category. I don't go to hoppers that often now but when I do it gets played. I think, for me at least, it has the quality but I'm just tired of hearing it. I genuinely believe I may feel good about it as a record if I heard it again after it had faded from my memory. I suspect regional differences are at play here.
  15. Harlem Jons Reshuffle is worth a mention. Full of interesting covers of contemporary soul tunes. Even has a picture on the back of them performing at the Empress Ballroom Wigan before it became the Casino.
  16. Janine I guess. Mind you I have attended venues in Preston 14 miles from home but have been working in Canterbury that day so that's a fair journey too. Promoters get around a lot sometimes 3 or 4 venues in a night and what about Paul from On the Scene?
  17. Depends what you mean by dedicated. I'm out every Friday and Saturday night at a venue. I have 6 cds always on in the car. I play records at home when at home, on my laptop when away from home, I come on here when I can, I search numerous websites, auction houses via the web, contact non soul dealers in the US, find second hand record shops in every town I visit with work. I live in Blackpool but am rarely at home. I guess the question though Shane appears to be which part of the country has soul fans who travel furthest to get to venues?
  18. I have just finished reading this really interesting, if somewhat pointless thread. I have found some of the points very interesting. I don't know about definitions but I know what I like and I guess we are wll the same. My points for what they are worth (I realise this is very little but as much as anyone elses) The top 500 - Kev did spend some time eliciting views from all people on what should be in the top 500 he appealed via magazines and Richard's radio show. I disagree with the vast majority of them but then I didn't send him my views at the time so there's no wonder. The title put me off I just knew it could only ever be right at a split second in time. I can't write two personal top tens five minutes apart and them be the same so defining the top 500 for everyone for all time was a doomed project. The Shakers - Classic northern and a superb record in its day it once had the power to make the hairs satnd up on the back of my neck but now I'd rather not hear it for 15 years or so and then maybe it would sound fresh again . Whinnie if you want to hear it get to Preston Grasshoppers last friday of the month you'll hear it and loads like it every month. Progressive - just a word to give punters a clue Up Front - just a phrase to give punters a clue There are very very few new tracks on the scene but loads that are new to me. Pick up a price guide pick a single page a see how many of the tracks listed you can hand on heart say you have heard in the last three months? And on any page for most of us at least there will be some we don't know at all (by name at least) maybe these are the upfront or progressive ones?
  19. I like the 30 min format at SON as it does allow two different styles to be played. This can have a down side though I got comments like "What the f*** was that shite" (thanks for the constructive feedback Sid ) and "I never expected to hear you play a set like that I really enjoyed it" about my first set last time round. I like the chance to play some stuff out of left field but some people have fixed expectation of some DJ's. I also; by accident rather than design; did almost 2 1/2 hours at the lifeline weekender on the Friday afternoon loved that too. At the Neighbourhood we have always done one hour spots this works best when planning multi room venues IMO. People shifting rooms for 30 mins to follow a DJ is a little impracticle IMO.
  20. Big Man Cry is a country song. In fact a version was done on the Country Hits lable, a bit like out Top of The Pops albums of the 70's, just covers of country hits. This isn't just a country interpretation of the song either given that Ed wrote it. Still a good record though not in the league of Charlie Rich's - Don't Tear Me Down another country 'northern' classic.
  21. If i'd sold Walter and The Admirations for £15 I'd have an abrasive telephone manner too
  22. still waiting 2 years for my velvets issue on 20th century demo only cost 200 $ Should it be 200 years and $2
