  1. About five years ago I was in Ealing visiting Thames Valley Uni and happened upon an Oxfam shop that just did records and books I found a few nice British items. Jimmy Radcliffe on Stateside a few early TMG demos and best of all an American Poets - She Blew a Good Thing on a yellow London Demo. No unussual to fine record in a record shop but all the sleeves had the name and address of the previous owner who lived in Edinburgh. How they got to Ealing is beyond me.
  2. simple but brilliant
  3. I can't say I have ever seen a flyer wth a statement like this on, not that I am doubting they exist. I don't personally care if people put this on the flyer but it is a bit daft as it can be misunderstood and may well lead to less reveue for the event. If someone puts this on a flyer why would that lead anyone to reconsider if they are a 'real' soulie or not? If you are a real soulie why does it bother you? No one is saying you aren't (other than you showing some self doubt). NB - The 'you' in this statement is not aimed at Malc but people in general. I think regardless of what we think about our own credentials many of us will have seen people drinking on the dance floor, dancing round their handbags, bumping into people on the floor without even an acknowledgement let alone an apology etc etc. Putting 'real' soulies on a flyer is a bit daft but I at least can determine what they mean. What I am not sure about is how the hell do you decide at the door who you are going to let in and who you are not Being a promoter is difficult enough without creating headaches for yourself IMO.
  4. Sadly another example of the downside of following stars from the 60's. Really hope she pulls through I believe she was still performing until very recently.
  5. Take the hundred quid and give £35 of it to the original seller when you see him next so you have both had £50 out of the deal. Don't know why you think buying from some one for a price they ask is any different from taking an amount that is offered? The only difference in this instance is both you and your mate know this can sell for much more. Mind you the original seller had the price about right based on quality and numbers about.
  6. Maybe the three that have bid this up to this level need a minter to complete the label? No other logical explanation.
  7. After a brief email conversation with this seller about collecting the item should I win it and a message to the only bidder (probably the same person) he has decided to remove the listing.
  8. Played this at Middleton on Saturday and it went down well.
  9. Don't know about the initial post but I genuinely meant different rather than first or second class. Point taken about Sam and Butch perhaps thats why they appear to get less 'soul night' bookings than Ginger??. I go to soul nights and consider my self descerning but feel at many soul nights I am in a minority. There are notable exceptions Soul Gems in Preston and Soul or Nothing are good examples. I prefer nights like this but they are less well attended than nights that are more oldies biased therefore I perceive the audiences to be different and the crowd looking for something different to be smaller and as a generalisation more likely to be keen nighter goers. Others go where they like the music and I've stopped trying to understand those that want broadly the same music week in year out but hey they're paying their money so its up to them.
  10. These DJ will in the man play stuff to compliment the venue and crowd. A spot from Ginger at Preston Grasshoppers will undoubtedly be different than a spot from Ginger at Sheridans. The expectation of the promotor is different, the reaction of the dancers is different and yes to my mind the people are different. At least the majority of the people are different.
  11. Took me a while to find it but here's a scan of my copy. As you can see the goup name has been added with a rubber stamp.
  12. Superb
  13. I can understand not being allowed to post a full PM but if someone uses a PM to insult, threaten, belittle or otherwise harrass someone on here is it right that they can do it in the certain knowledge that the recipient will not be able to share any of it with other members of the forum Appears a bit arse about face to me. PS I have no idea what the PM was about btw.
  14. Good Phil ta mate. Just a mad week Blackpool, Macclesfield, Exeter, Plymouth, Bournemouth, Birmingham and it's only Thursday. Will you be gracing Middleton on Sat?
  15. You don't often see the words 'Kev Roberts" and "In Touch" in the same sentence
  16. You had an bad day James?
  17. Having longer to fill certainly challenges you as a DJ. I agreed to do an hour for Roly Ferguson at Dance What Ya Wanna with a brief of Latin, Boogaloo, R&B, Club Soul and a bit of Northern. I ended up doing two hours in one room and three in the other with a two hundred playbox there no space for fillers I can tell you. And you soon run out of any safe ones you have put in the box
  18. A double thumbs up for the Tommy Tate - Taking on Pain at the last Campbells btw Steve just what this thread is about I suspect.
  19. I'll be along to support Col at the Bitter Suite Joan. I never predict just what I'll play 'cause you never know what the mood of the crowd will be or what has been played by others but new stuff in my play box for this will include. Marva Hicks - Looking Over My Shoulder Purple Reign - You Gave Me Somebody Nate Williams - Mugged by Love Paul Burton - So Very Hard To Make It Miller Sisters - I'm Telling it Like it Is. And a new to me oldie I've always liked. Tari Stevens - False Alarm
  20. I think I prefer acts that are still active and unlike most I like hearing their current stuff. Not sure how appropriate that is at a 'northern' event. I know the stick we got at the Neighbourhood for Betty LaVette doing stuff off her (then) current album. Mind you when she was jamming in the Winter Gardens with just a Pianist the night before was just about the best live performance I've ever seen and there was only about ten of us there. She did tell us about being good friends with Pat Lewis. Now she would be worth seeing.
  21. There's enough people wearing them to keep a couple of guys in Nottingham in business at least. I remember how we used to rip the pi55 out of teddy boys still wearing all their clobber in the 70's and I'm sure non soulies view people wandering around wearing this out moded fashion in the same way. Does the credibility of the scene no good mind you like a lot of the records that get played
  22. What's overplayed or played out really depends on your location. If you played this set in the north west the red ones would be over-played IMO. But how can I or anyone else outside your area say what is over played there? And so how can we advise you to stop playing them. You know what is over played in your area I'm sure. A good mixture all the same with some I never hear at all. Round here at least
  23. Why would anyone put 'Request' after a record in a play list in a vain attempt to get people to think they didn't want to play it. They put it in their play box didn't they. I get requests all the time for record I have but unless they are in my play box for that event I ain't gonna play them (obviously) and if they are in there they are in on merit so why would I not play them. I think putting 'Request' after the tune says more about the crowd / venue than anything and if I see 'requests' I like it can indicate the venue may by to my liking.
  24. Gene, I think that is what the 'rubber stamp' says but I'm in Devon at the moment so can't check. I did mean to ask this question when I saw one just like the one you have for sale on Pat Brady's site but it slipped my mind. Can't see this being pressed at three different plants? But you never know. I know it was getting plays at the Greatstone a while back so maybe one of the guys from there knows?
  25. Gene-R has posted a scan of this in the sales section. The lable design is totally different from mine which had the group name missed off when pressed and added later with a rubber stamp. Anyone else got the same. I suspect this was pressed first and withdrawn? A bit like the Volcanoes Rules / Laws. If anyone knows the story I'd be interested in hearing it. Thanks in advance
