  1. I think this is the approach most DJ's take. Can I ask the original poster what evidence she has that the DJ is a "liar" rather than just didn't get the opportunity to fit a record in to the flow of the set or simply (and this is sometimes the case for me) couldn't locate it in his box or thought he'd brought it and hadn't. I change probably 50% of my play box before every event I'm asked to DJ at (not always the same 50% lol) and with my playbox holding about 2% of my records I can't always swear to exactly whats in it. I would however play any record I own if asked for it and had it with me. If its wrong for the venue or the type of music I expect to work with the punters it isn't in my box.
  2. Not sure if its the same 'MY' records but I have a track by Merging Traffic "Ain't No Need in me fooling Myself" on the MY label somewhere. It a yellow label if that matches?
  3. Mick the owner of Records and Relics in Blackpool has the lot London, Oriole, Stateside etc everything upto 1979 and he is very very particular about condition. Roly Ferguson has first refusal if he ever decides to sell and that was in turn for Roly selling him a complete set of the Motown Appreciation Society magazines that Dave Godin put together along with other memorabilia such as a telegram sent to Dave Godin on the setting up of the Society which I think was from Berry Gordy. I had the fortune to have a read of them while Roly still had them - facinating stuff.
  4. Played this at Maximes on Sat night to a decent reaction from the floor but a better one from comments off people after my set. Must have been seven or eight people asked me about it. Good luck in finding one took me an age.
  5. May do a little better in Sales rather than Wants. Can a mod oblige?
  6. For some spitting in people's ears is the best part of the night
  7. I know a few that dance like that the same to every record that plays no matter what tempo. The cattle prod is a good idea just not for the really ugly ones as the extra electricity used would substantially increase our carbon footprint
  8. As you know Joe I don't go out to be social would make the record bar a bit quiet to. Could solve the two room problem at Maximes Backbeat on one channel and the Willingham Suite on the other sorted
  9. Link To Silent Arena This is interesting not sure it's been discussed on here before but basically every one on the dancefloor wears wireless headphones and pic the channel that suits them or swaps and changes as they like. It'd be a brave promotor that tried it I think but you never know.
  10. This will not be a popular view but the best venues should and could charge more IMHO. Anyone who want to hear rare records should recognise that the costs of putting on such a night are considerable. I know others don't care about format or rarity (for rarity read rarity of play not fewer copies in existance) and ironically these are the sometimes the best attended venues. For me the two markets are different and I'd want to pay less for some soul nights and be willing to pay much more for a "Quality" (in my opinion) nighter. Trouble is most don't see it as two markets and so the average door tax at one type of night sets the punters expected price at the other. I know I've not explained that very well but it makes sense to me. How about making a nighter £20 but £15 for members and if someone makes money out of it so what. The important thing for me is the product I'm buying not how much profit is made. I know not all soulies shop at Lidl, Aldi or B&M Bargains but if they applied the same logic in their shopping as they do to cost of a soul nite most would. Perhaps thats why I don't promote anymore lol
  11. Welcome aboard Reverend good to have you here.
  12. AM I the only one that thinks I'll Be Sweeter is so like Jimmie Bo Horne - I Just Can't Speak. On Topic - Billie Kennedy -Sweet Things & This is a Groovy Generation
  13. Funny but not as daft as people may think
  14. They're about 7 years too late He didn't have any spares back then
  15. I have to agree on Sam Cooke who had to fight opinions not only from the white audience but also the relegious black community opposed to his turning from his gospel roots to secular music. Much as Michael Jackson was an icon his loss has severely warped peoples views of his impact in his early days. Motown was already massive before the J5 joined no matter how spectacular their impact. I'm not deminishing MJ's status just that his impact on white acceptance of black music is being somewhat overplayed.
  16. You'll know by whether you sell it or not I guess.
  17. But that would be a boot then Dave Remember Original Databases Only
  18. That's it Benji - It was their only Pentagon outing.
  19. That wasn't the case in the early 80's Phil. When "IDKAY" was first played no one wanted "IDKHT" and they were all over the place. I wasn't as enlightened then and seeing as it was recorded after '67 I wasn't interested. You live and learn though
  20. I kept missing it for ages then found one (not on ebay in VG cond for $6 ); for me it the fact it isn't in the price guides that you could find it cheaply it is a hard hard record though.
  21. Yes but I have put on the last CD swap since then no wonder it's "Very In Demand"
  22. You sod Wonder who was second highest bidder
  23. I don't know any DJ that put's rarity above danceability. Perhaps you could name some; well one will do. We have a bigger 'sweetshop' than ever before those records haven't all disappeared you know. I try to be at venues early but can only tell you what people have danced to that night not what they will dance to. You make a judgement based on style, tempo, era etc. Playing safe and only giving an audience stuff you KNOW they will dance to is all too common and restricts the sweetshops sales to just a few top selling lines. There are less and less new discoveries nowadays but without DJ's having the balls to try something new the scene is dead already. I wonder why so many people have lost that urge to hear something new? At least new blood on the scene doesn't come with such baggage. I'm all for getting new people into the music but that must be done by the music itself not by marketting men and hype in the effort to make a fast buck that was tried in the 70's. If they have a genuine love of the music then that will last. We can do without the fashionistas who only see it as a way to build their own credibility.
  24. Perhaps the staggered Archer stamped ones with the 3W matrix were pressed by Archer? In fact you can still have Archer press records now and they will be Archer stamped. I believe the Archer stamp has changed over time but the different size run ins indicate the two Archer stamped versions were pressed many years apart. As someone has already said the other 60's Archer pressed records are similar to the large Archer version not only in terms of the Archer stamp (and 3W matrix) but also size of run in, vinyl profile etc.
