  1. Good luck this is a hard one. Took me about 3 years to get mine.
  2. Not a "naive old git" but perhaps an idealist. Over the last 6 months there have been an average of over 36 licensed outlets a week closing down so they'll take what business they can. Sometimes for the venues that's opportunism more often its a way to keep the wolves from the door.
  3. If I may say so Macca that's nieve. The typical conversion rate in a 'good' bar operation is between 10 and 15% no one is going to consider running a night that the busier it is the more money it costs them. If a venue takes £3k they would be foregoing around £300-£450 in profit which is one thing but handing over £3k is another. I't be about £2,600 ish anyway or is the VAT man donating his cut?
  4. Personally I'd draw the line at asking the venue to give up it's profits from bar sales but would ask them for a donation or some raffle prizes. Getting a 'clean' figure for the profit from a bar would be almost impossible and even if it could be done it would be commercially sensitive.
  5. As a punter for me it's ALMOST always about the music and so who the DJ's are. However I would go out of my way to support a charity event for the causes that are close to me in which case I'd put up with any kind of music in any location. DJ's should never charge for supporting a charity night, promotors shouldn't take expences and the venue should be waiving a hire fee. I agree with Steve they should also be donating for the raffle. Can remember donating a LARGE cuddly rabbit for the raffle at a charity do I was asked to DJ at; the person that won it sold it to someone else who really wanted it and then donated the money to the charity. That's the type of behaviour that should set a charity do apart.
  6. I believe you - after all why would you lie about having a record for sale
  7. You are probably right(ish) but if that's a list of nominations, all I can say to that is - James Dockery on Soul Craft
  8. Like I said who is a good dancer is subjective and like Ken said who is a good DJ is subjective I'd like to know who the judges are going to be
  9. I'd have both of those if they came via this mythical magic wand, though I wouldn't buy either of them. And as for playing them out maybe just if I was DJing for a dance competition
  10. Ahh that's because having a great collection and being a great DJ are two different things Being the greatest Dancer or DJ are probably both subjective having the greatest collection probably isn't. I can think of loads of 'northern' records I wouldn't buy but can't think of any I would rather not own than own (inc Mercy ). If that makes any sense?
  11. Collection every time. The quality of dancing is so subjective anyway. Look at some of the finalists in last years "World Norther Soul Dancing Championships"
  12. Hi Mike, As I said very difficult (if not impossible) to police and I realise that particularly when they are on sites that there are links to. Ged
  13. I didn't think you were serious. I'm sure Ady and Paul can look after themselves. If ebay didn't list these things though it would make my searches a whole lot more productive and hopefully much less frustrating. I'd much rather have a search throw up no results than 10 that all turn out to be boots. As I said Nightwatch was right time; right place.
  14. I'd settle for an MP3 for now if anyone can oblige.
  15. Rod Both barrels lol I'm only expressing a view on something I have very little chance of ever changing. You have a fair point the analogy isn't water tight but I'm not advocating giving anyone full access. Most of the people that sell boots at soul nights are not the creators or even the original buyers of the said items and although they help keep the market going. If you could at a stroke destroy all bootlegs that had ever been made new ones would just be created in their place. Making more money for the current opportunists who I think are the ones that should be challenged. I could understand buyers being around for these items in the 70's and 80's but once CD's became prevalent why the hell does anyone want to own one of these it's beyond me. I'd prefer it if Mike didn't allow such links, ebay was stronger on stopping these things being sold, venues stopped sellers who routinely sell boots and dodgy CD's but it must be hard to police. On the Nighwatch - I bought it; paying more for it then than it is probably worth now; and it is a great piece of white pop that was the right tempo at the time and I'd never sell it but it's just not soulful or right for today in my view. Don't think I was slating it though just admitting to playing it.
  16. Yes it does but in many cases these were created many years ago or in such a manner that it was impossible to tell if they were 'licensed' or not so stopping the producers very difficult. I have had the misfortune to suffer more than one burglary at my home over the years. If I catch someone breaking in tonight should I wave them on their way because no one was caught in the past? That may be your approach I think I'd react somewhat differently
  17. Nightwatch - Lips To Your Heart The ultimate "tempo over substance" white pop stomper IMHO. In my defence it was a long long time ago and to an audience most of whom didn't know any better
  18. What about Stevie Wonder finishing a show in Japan and being asked to play "A Jazz Chord" not having a clue what the girl meant he asked her to sing the chorus and sets of in true karaoke fashion "A Jazz Chord to Sai A Ruview" I'll get me coat
  19. Sounds reasonable enough to me. I was just about to order some through Covers 33 but I'll hold off. Ged
  20. I don't think anyone should be banned from selling (or trying to sell) on here but I should say I'm resisting all temptation to ditch my principles in favour of bagging a "bargain"
  21. Don't you just hate ebay when you spot a longtime want, set your snipe, and then come on here and find everyone and his dog knows about it. I really do need to win the lottery
  22. I'm sure Denise wouldn't mind if you shared her details with all of us would she?
  23. Fucking ruins searching on ebay . I've added my complaint. If this is the same outfit that had the site northernsoulsource I find it impossible to believe they came up with that name without being at least lurkers on here. Someone must know them.
