J.d. Bryant On Shrine Estate Find In Usa
Not to my ears. The production of OMD is better but overall OGP shades it as a 'soul' record, however if we are just talking 'norther soul' then OMD fits the bill better. Most of the debate on this thread has been pointless as its all about opinion anyway. Shrine has a mystique beyond it's musical quality; and rarity is a part of that. You will hear more bum notes in the Shrine output than probably the whole Motown catalogue but in part at least that's because they didn't get the one massive smash to fund being more exacting in what they chose to accept as worthy of release. The reasons they couldn't breakthrough with one of their early releases is open to speculation of course. If you look however at the total output of the label it stands as a catalogue of massive quality in percentage terms. If Motown had delivered a similar percentage of its full catalogue to the same quality we would have had many many more records from Motown to admire. As far as JDB being worth over £6k not to me but if I'd had the money I'd have probably won the Cairos and still been in profit from the sale of my old copy. I think it was a mistake by the seller to list them all at once. All in my own opinion of course

Is Door Security Really Neccessary At Soul Events
The number of door staff needed is set out within the venues operating plan which is then annexed to the Premesis Licence and if they are employed they have to be SIA registered by law that is if they do anything other than directing customers or checking tickets. Regardless of who pays for the security the overall responsibilty lies with the DPS (Designated Premesis Supervisor) for the venue and any breaches are down to them. So they can and most often do set the operational standards of Door Staff. Even where there is not a NEED for door staff they have to be provided in the ratio set out within the conditions on the licence. Some are a minimum of 2 for the first 100 and then 1 per extra 75 but others are as low as 1 per 150. This varies as it is a hang over from the PEL (Public Entertainment Licence) regime that was superceded by the last licensing act and was controled by the relevant local council. Good practice guidance also states that clubs should provide free drinking water on demand but it isn't a legal requirement (unless within the venues licence conditions) so most don't. If they did then no one would need to take in their own.

Determinations - Bing Bong - King
Thats a good point Mark if he does have a lot asking for it but it's not that hard to pick up I don't think. Now a demo with the group biography would be a different matter I think.

Determinations - Bing Bong - King
I see John has listed an issue of this for auction. I find this suprising as I'd have thought it was a £50 - £75 record or have I missed some key fact like Butch is playing it?

Eddie Parker & Billy Sha-Rae
The only connection as far as I'm aware is the Jack Ashford / Lorraine Chandler one. Eddie was born in Saginaw, Michigan and Billy Sha Rae came from Jamaica. I love both versions of 'I'm Gone' Eddie's being better but not 100 times better which is about the price difference. The Billy Sha-Rae showstopper though is Pitfall on Rapid wish I had the energy to dance to it now lol.

Blue Eyed Soul Versus The Way Of The Crowd
Isn't "The Way Of The Crowd" - Dan Folger blue eyed anyway? I have an Embers album recorded live where they do impersonations of some of the big acts at the time. Including Ray Charles sacking one of his helpers live on stage quite a good likeness and quite funny too. If it's good enough it's black enough simple as that.

Hendrix And Soul ?
There loads of them I'm sure. Without checking I think he produced the Arabians - Take a Chance On Me - Le Mans for example. I'm sure others will add more.

Records You Can't Stop Singing At The Moment
Gretchen Peters - When you are Old.... When you are old and tired and gray Wear you overcoat on sunny days When your brave tales have all been told I'll ask for them when you are old When you are old and full of sleep And death no longer makes you weep When your body aches with cold I'll warm your heart when you are old You'll still be the same to me A comfort and a mystery And I will be old too you see I'll need someone to comfort me When you are old and pale and gaunt A gentle hand is all you want I will give you mine to hold And I'll be here when you are old Yes I will give you mine to hold And I'll be here when you are old

A Few Bits Up On Ebay
Hi Phil, You've not graded the Endeavours. From the scan it looks no better than my copy which I'm looking to upgrade at some point; so probably not one for me; but that may be why you've no bidders on this one? Can't think why otherwise its a beltin tune IMHO

Rarity
I'm not taking offence, or questioning how many friends anyone has, or suggesting anyone is naive or calling anyone a w**nker. So no drama here mate

Volcanos-Your N0 1
I'm with you Harry. They are 2nd issues not bootlegs. If you are a collector that concerns yourself with such things then there not original issues but they are legal and legitimate.

Rarity
Think its all been said. Its supply and demand. Big names playing stuff shouldn't impact on price but it does by increasing the demand. Mind you small names can also have this effect if you cover a record up well enough

Ebay Asking For Your View On Recent Changes
They're a business they HAVE to increase their profits every year. That's how capitalism works. The only form of protest they would take note of is loss of business. If the service they provide isn't worth the money don't buy it. It like moaning about the cost of records, the option to auction stuff through ebay is worth as much as you the users are willing to pay.

Its Hard To Impress A Woman If You Don't Know Her
Thanks for the conflicting advice everyone Mark has sent me this reply to my plea for more guidance: "oh honestly..... she goes to a couple of the clubs down here around hertfordshire - i've had a look at her cd collection and her taste looks pretty mainstream - just those usual northern compilations that everyone has, and some more soul type soul - basically i just want something that will excite her and make her happy, whilst being a bit less mainstream than the usual compilations. You are so precious Mr Parker!! i mean obviously being a woman she loves the original tainted love, we bonded over al wilson so like i say, pretty mainstream. i would guess older stuff." So it's the simple task of oldies like Tainted Love and The Snake but less mainstream There's a couple of you female types from Letchworth area on here I seem to remember. If it's one of you your too good for him btw

Its Hard To Impress A Woman If You Don't Know Her
I've just been contacted by a friend on Faceache with the following message "i need a really good northern soul cd to impress a woman with! can you burn me one? i'll pay p&p...." How the hell do you choose what to put on a CD for someone that could be an avid all nighter goer up on all that's current or alternatively have a distant memory of Muriel Day. I wouldn't be much of a 'wing man' if I got it wrong and he needs all the help he can get I have asked him for some more clues but it's not easy to explain is it.

Disturbing Trend
The "why" is complex I guess. The equity in any brand (and like it or not Out of The Blue is a brand) is best measured in cash value benchmarked either against its competition or or its previous value. If the brand owner doesn't value it why would anyone else. Your door policy is devaluing your efforts IMHO. It makes me think that the night is just some background in a high street pub that could have anyone in it and if its a pub that can give the night away free at the weekend is this the type if Manchester pub I'd want to take my wife into? (I used to love the Beehive on Claremont Road on a Saturday but never took my wife in there) This is the perception it gives. A perception may be right or wrong but it is still a perception. I suspect if I did go though I'd hear things to make me take notice and I have to wiegh that against the 'free night in a pub' perception which will stop me ever finding out. I wasn't just refering to the local 'oldies off CD nights' there are some big venues that leave me cold.

Disturbing Trend
Some interesting perspectives here. Beeks I'd charge if I were you, you'd soon know the value others put on the night. Even if you give it all away to charity. Reg makes a useful point in so much as it's the music that's important and we can all name nights we don't go to because we know they wouldn't suit us and I doubt (m)any of think about the entry cost when deciding where to go. On Friday I travelled to the Disciples of Soul in Birmingham £25 in fuel, £14 overnight parking plus a night at the Holiday Inn. I've no idea how much it was to get in I didn't check before I went. What I did know though was all the DJ's would be playing real records and I was pretty sure I'd hear something new that would make me stand up and take notice. I could have gone local on the Saturday to a high profile event but stayed in instead. I've no idea how much it was to get into this night either could have been free and I probably still would have stayed home. It takes all sorts duunit

Disturbing Trend
Not sure Joe was having a dig at you particularly Beeks but I do think he has a point. Why do you feel the need to do it free? Do you not think people would pay? Do you not need the money for more records? If not is there not a charity that could do with the money in your opinion? (all acounted for like the Red House obviously). Not a dig from me just wondering about your reasoning?
