  1. You're right Nev on all points. My view is that they are trying to get a reputation as a place you have to look if you're desperate for a big tune. You can't do that if you turn over your stock 'too quickly'. Anyway I'm just guessing Steve or Lee can speak for themselves I'm sure; it's their business and they have to carry the can if they loose money or don't shift any tunes. Most of us know the score in terms of what a tune is gettable for and what you should be paying if you want it NOW. So its the old adage 'it's only worth..............
  2. I assume they want to make a profit on items they've bought recently rather than 25 or 30 years ago. It must be a hard market to break into unless you are noted for having a supply of hard to get items. Unless you have them already you have to buy the 'stock' at the going rate and hope to sell at a profit I guess. Don't envy anyone trying to make a living at it.
  3. Condition. condition, condition. When it comes to UK singles that's the mantra and this one was superb.
  4. "To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man" as old Will Shakey once wrote.
  5. The 'purists' would say it has to ALL be black surely? I'm not a 'purist' in that sense but I'd say it IS predominately black american and thats for a reason. It is predominately black american artists of the 60's and 70's that produce the sound most of us want to hear. Yes there are white and hispanic artists artists that do it too but they are the exception. Not because I or anyone else says so just beacuse thats the way it is.
  6. 17th April is my wedding anniversary The person who typeset that flyer needs a bit more experience I'd say. Reads a bit like Simon Whitedick
  7. They don't need to hear it either they've already made up their mind
  8. A reasonable effort I'd say but not my cup of tea. The WSOT is notorious for all the wrong reasons. I for one couldn't really tell it was a new production when it surfaced and I believe most others couldn't either (though hindsight is a wonderful thing ) No issues with him winning the reality show or the infamy that came from the four vandals association but to me it was just a reasonable record no more no less.
  9. The only advice I can give is the original is on styrene and the boot was vinyl. Though I understand there are some vinyl originals too. I also think the 'barcody' type thing on the left of the label also doesn't go all the way to the edge on the boots but it's been a while since I saw one.
  10. I put a dozen 45's not listed in the guides on the May CD swap. They were mostly sh1t tho
  11. Yeah Keith came out twice in quick succession 001 and 002 if memory serves me right. You know how some people are they'll only want the 001 release.
  12. Keith it may help if you say which release of the Arabians it is. Just a thought
  13. Little that I can add to whats already been said. Our sincere condolences to Alan's family. Ged and Margaret
  14. I thought Chorleysoul was Pete Fowler? Apologies if I was wrong.
  15. Pete, In my view you (and when I say you I mean people in general not you specifically) have to approach these debates in the right spirit. Selective quoting out of context, forgetting who said what, exhagerating other peoples position, paraphrasing for effect etc are to be expected its no different than a political debate where each side can have its say unchallenged (but not unresponded to at some later point). If we all take the huff everytime it happens it stops it being a debating forum at all for those involved and frankly a bore for the casual readers.
  16. Not to my ears. The production of OMD is better but overall OGP shades it as a 'soul' record, however if we are just talking 'norther soul' then OMD fits the bill better. Most of the debate on this thread has been pointless as its all about opinion anyway. Shrine has a mystique beyond it's musical quality; and rarity is a part of that. You will hear more bum notes in the Shrine output than probably the whole Motown catalogue but in part at least that's because they didn't get the one massive smash to fund being more exacting in what they chose to accept as worthy of release. The reasons they couldn't breakthrough with one of their early releases is open to speculation of course. If you look however at the total output of the label it stands as a catalogue of massive quality in percentage terms. If Motown had delivered a similar percentage of its full catalogue to the same quality we would have had many many more records from Motown to admire. As far as JDB being worth over £6k not to me but if I'd had the money I'd have probably won the Cairos and still been in profit from the sale of my old copy. I think it was a mistake by the seller to list them all at once. All in my own opinion of course
  17. The number of door staff needed is set out within the venues operating plan which is then annexed to the Premesis Licence and if they are employed they have to be SIA registered by law that is if they do anything other than directing customers or checking tickets. Regardless of who pays for the security the overall responsibilty lies with the DPS (Designated Premesis Supervisor) for the venue and any breaches are down to them. So they can and most often do set the operational standards of Door Staff. Even where there is not a NEED for door staff they have to be provided in the ratio set out within the conditions on the licence. Some are a minimum of 2 for the first 100 and then 1 per extra 75 but others are as low as 1 per 150. This varies as it is a hang over from the PEL (Public Entertainment Licence) regime that was superceded by the last licensing act and was controled by the relevant local council. Good practice guidance also states that clubs should provide free drinking water on demand but it isn't a legal requirement (unless within the venues licence conditions) so most don't. If they did then no one would need to take in their own.
  18. Thats a good point Mark if he does have a lot asking for it but it's not that hard to pick up I don't think. Now a demo with the group biography would be a different matter I think.
  19. I see John has listed an issue of this for auction. I find this suprising as I'd have thought it was a £50 - £75 record or have I missed some key fact like Butch is playing it?
  20. The only connection as far as I'm aware is the Jack Ashford / Lorraine Chandler one. Eddie was born in Saginaw, Michigan and Billy Sha Rae came from Jamaica. I love both versions of 'I'm Gone' Eddie's being better but not 100 times better which is about the price difference. The Billy Sha-Rae showstopper though is Pitfall on Rapid wish I had the energy to dance to it now lol.
  21. Isn't "The Way Of The Crowd" - Dan Folger blue eyed anyway? I have an Embers album recorded live where they do impersonations of some of the big acts at the time. Including Ray Charles sacking one of his helpers live on stage quite a good likeness and quite funny too. If it's good enough it's black enough simple as that.
  22. There loads of them I'm sure. Without checking I think he produced the Arabians - Take a Chance On Me - Le Mans for example. I'm sure others will add more.
  23. Gretchen Peters - When you are Old.... When you are old and tired and gray Wear you overcoat on sunny days When your brave tales have all been told I'll ask for them when you are old When you are old and full of sleep And death no longer makes you weep When your body aches with cold I'll warm your heart when you are old You'll still be the same to me A comfort and a mystery And I will be old too you see I'll need someone to comfort me When you are old and pale and gaunt A gentle hand is all you want I will give you mine to hold And I'll be here when you are old Yes I will give you mine to hold And I'll be here when you are old
  24. Hi Phil, You've not graded the Endeavours. From the scan it looks no better than my copy which I'm looking to upgrade at some point; so probably not one for me; but that may be why you've no bidders on this one? Can't think why otherwise its a beltin tune IMHO
  25. I'm not taking offence, or questioning how many friends anyone has, or suggesting anyone is naive or calling anyone a w**nker. So no drama here mate
