That album is a great addition to any collection. Their version of Down in the Valley stands up well against the original. For me the best track on the album.

Hate to see anyone in such a fix that they have to sell records and wish you well in getting back on track. You have a few blessings to count and you seem to be handling this quite well (on here at least). Most people do not have the wherewithall to come back from such a set back but you appear to have an ability to earn serious money as long as you have equity to front up your work. This will stand you in good stead I'm sure. I'm not trying to minimise the seriousness of the situation in any way but I'm sure you'll agree you have avenues back to wealth that haven't been open to some other members on here when times were tough for them. Keep positive and I'm sure you'll be back to your usual self pretty quickly.

Did I come over a bit defensive then I didn't think you meant me particularly. There is always the pressure to please the dancefloor but as I have said before your job as a DJ is to play the type of stuff the promotor wants you to play. It's his / her job to please the punters not yours. The promotor sets the tone because they know the type of event they want to promote. If they don't all a DJ can do is play to the floor.

It was a rhetorical question I guess, well until Joe answered it . I know there isn't the new stuff around to do a whole night of 'newies' and it isn't commercially viable. The last one fitted the mould that Joe described 25 / 75 split probably. It was just a new slant on the discussion which could equally apply to the Mecca Reunion or the Wigan vs Morecambe Pier event Shaun Gibbons is putting on at the Carlton. The good thing is that a lot of the best stuff from back then remains underplayed. For me what I want to hear and what I play are often two different things as I want to hear things I haven't got and by definition can't play them if I don't have them. I play what I think the crowd would like to hear and this changes by venue, but of course I know what you mean. In many cases the moving on (or not) depends on how many records you know from years gone by as there are few genuinely new things being found and those that are are so rare unless you're in the right place at the right time you may never hear them out. It would be great to know the prevailing view of what people want to hear in every venue but you can only build up that picture over time and after a few visits and any event like this is bound to aim to hit the widest audience in the absence of any relevant recent experience to go on. Dave and co have set out the stall quite well and I'm sure people know what they're letting themselves in for. My question was more of a debating point than a criticism.

I'm in the minority too. I wonder if Sunday will be an event that captures the spirit of Stafford, ie loads of new or obscure things to hear or if it'll be an event that replaces the Wigan oldies with the Stafford oldies? Be interesting to find out.

I think the point Gareth made was that you saying they are not RARE records just cheap good records misrepresented the room. If people were to go there and think they could pick up anything there heard relatively easily they'd probably be disappointed a lot of the time when they tried to track some of these tracks down. In terms of hearing the same expensive records all the time I think you and he are on the same page.

Are you sure about that missgoldie? I don't have the Paul Burton 45 anymore but still have the Soul Aces and they never struck me as anything alike vocally. I know the credits on You're Different say Charles Derick but he was the lable owner and didn't sing on the track at all, just a ploy to get more royalties I believe.

Nick, I'd just ask who are you collecting for? If it's for you then it only matters what you think. I collect for me and although I DJ I don't buy anything on that basis. I buy what I like and what I can afford on original labels. I have the complete run of Grapevine Demos but wouldn't play them out for the reason Pete keeps his 'northern led demand' releases seperate from his 'released at the time' British. Whatever you decide to do, do it for you nobody else, is the best advice me or anyone else can give. Ged

On the original topic. If you want to run an event using CD's then do so but be open about it and let the punters make an informed choice. If you don't want to hear CD's there's plenty of OVO venues that need your support. As a promoter, DJ or punter you have choices to make, make them and live with the results. It's not rocket science and it will take just one night for most people that care to know what your approach is, to both original vinyl and the progressiveness of the music policy. And you can come on here and say black is white but people that know will know.

Oi there's a queue

There are few people on the scene to my knowledge that either buy or play records that don't like or can't afford. On reflection there's more of the ones that buy what they can't afford. I only buy records I like and if I like them I want people to hear them and like them too. I can play a hour of things I know a lot will like but that's just chickening out. For me the original vinyl only policy is about restricting the amount of times you here the 'big tunes'. Rather than any desire to stop people enjoying them its about keeping them special. Too many DJ's play records that have already been played but sometimes thats not wanting to say no when someone requests it. I've had people badger me to play records that I'VE already played 'cause so and so was late or in the toilet or wherever. Sometimes you gotta say NO. The acceptance or otherwise of CD's / downloads etc will not hold back the scene instead it is the lack of courage to try something new that is exhibited by far too many which has ruined too many venues for too long, for me at least that is. The trick is to blend the new with similar tunes and not loose the floor. No one can do this 100% of the time but if you never try neither you or the scene will develop.
