  1. Yes Bob thats why I named iTunes it doesn't apply to the newly launched HMV download service for example. You can also make a carver from a CD track. It has to be for your own personal use though. Legally you cannot sell it.
  2. Any legitimate DJ should play legitimate recordings end of story. With several shades of grey in between each group. It's simple really. No wonder you're banging your head against the wall. You've used one simple comment that legitimate DJs only play legitimate recordings which is an absolute and applied to it a totally out of context comment which applies to something very different. If you can't understand the different types of venue and don't know from the venues you go to (DJ at) or you don't know from speaking to promotors which is which I feel very very sorry for you and can understand your need to start this topic.
  3. Sorry bob but you do. iTunes operate a DRM ( Digital Rights Management) that stipulates that any download can be used only on the device to which it was downloaded. So if you wanted a track on your ipod downstairs and a seperate one in your bedroom you needed to download it twice. A track you own and have purchased on (be it on a CD, vinyl or other phisical format) you are allowed to make a copy of, for you use in place of the original and it this copy can be in any format analogue or digital. So having a carver cut of something you own is legal. Thats the position in the UK anyway.
  4. Any legitimate DJ should play legitimate recordings end of story. A carver made from something you own is a legitiate recording. A carver made from something you don't own isn't. A tune downloaded from iTunes and you have legally paid for is legitimate, if you copy it to another device or change the format it isn't. A bootleg is not and cannot be considered legitimate. You must be true to yourself first off. You make a choice. Do you want to be a legitimate DJ or not? Oh and if you do you should pay you dues to PPL and if playing of digital media get a Digital DJ Licence. Then there are different promotors views which can be grouped: Those that don't care if their DJ's are legitimate or what format their music is played in. Those that only book legitimate DJ's and don't care what format their music is played in. Those that only book legitimate DJ's and want their venues to be OVO. With several shades of grey in between each group. If you want to play in every type of venue be prepared to match your output to the promotors policy. (and possibly have to justify yourself on here) You decide where (as a DJ) you want to fit - no one else. Promotors decide their policy (and which DJ's to book) - no one else. Punters decide where to go using their own criteria - no one else. It's simple really.

  9. This will come down to opinions I guess, but for me without a doubt there would have been a 'Northern Soul' scene in the UK. The scene here in the early 60's wasn't Motown exclusively so the demand for those types of tune was already around. The style of music initially listened to may have been slightly different without Motown but soul would still have found its way into the mainstream of American culture and so on to Britain. Some people may hold the view that Motown lead the way in Detroit others say that it wasn't the first or best 'soul' stable of labels in that city. It became the most sucessful without a doubt but the stories of sharp practice to block others from the market still abound. Some say that without Motown the Detroit soul scene may even have been bigger. Personally I doubt that, mainly because the particular style of Motown hit the spot for young white America and it was this breakthrough that made all the difference in terms of commercial success. This sucess was useful to Motown and helped bring the music to the mases in the UK but it wasn't INHO crucial to an underground scene here in the UK developing. Think about Ska and Reggae which weren't mainstream 'pop' but still found an appreciative audience in parts of the UK. There are all sorts of cultural reasons (immigration particularly) why this is the case and they are not as apparent in the soul scene but equally the influence of the US was starting to pervade TV (like it had in cinema for years) in the 60's and this wasn't the case for Ska and Reggae. Almost by definition Northern Soul isn't mainstream so it could be argued that Berry Gordy's effort to take black music to the mainstream are irrelevant. It's not that clear cut in my opinion but the Northern scene or something very like it was inevitable. It may have been smaller, it may not have attracted the fashionistas but it would have found a way to exist.

  11. Sounds like any venue from around that time. I'm sure Yate broke many sounds but on my two visit the only trach I can remember hearing there for the first time was Marva Whitney - Looking Back Over My Shoulder. In fact I bought it on the strength of hearing it then. Like I say must have broke other stuff but the biggest tunes there appeared to me at least to be the big tunes anywhere.

  13. This is a common 'type' of question on here or at least they view it implies appears quite often. Just who are these DJ's that play records they don't believe in JUST because they are expensive? I'm not sure they exist.
  14. I know one DJ who when asked to "play something a bit more mainstream, you know something they'll all know" by a promotor part way through their set replied "F*ck 'em they're all morons". The same guy, I was hearing the other week, used to ask hitch hikers on the way back from Stafford "what's your favourite record" and if the response was in his opinion not creadible enough expect to be left by the roadside in a cloud of tyre smoke.
  15. Who's to say what's a rediculous request? If a DJ just plays requests he may only be pleasing the few people that make requests. I've said this before o here punters don't pay a DJ's wages. The promotor does. It is the promotor they should be aiming to please. If the promotor has positioned his event in the right way and booked the 'right' DJ's, the punters will know what type of music they'll get and the DJ will have that type with them. Requests at an 'underplayed' event are pretty pointless from my perspective, the whole point is to be pleasantly suprised. IMHO.

  17. What price a white demo of the red version? Only ever seen one. It resides with Roly Ferguson who used to spin it in the rare room at the Neighbourhood. Quality record. I never knew it was a mecca spin though.

  19. I can remember it hapening and saw the articles at the time (78 or 79ish), I think it was Studio 54 that was runner up. I did see the article way back then but now understand that, in true billboard style, the calculation was done using numbers of registered members as the criteria and that alone. I know for a fact I had a least three memberships in my time at the Casino and each had a new number; so hardly scientific. If you think someone is going to fly in from the States to give a plaque to a club in Wigan frankly you're sadly mistaken. Musically the Mecca was better but for an overall experience the Casino did it for me.

  25. Speak to the people that recorded it they'll tell you what it is. Most will call it R&B. Mind you if you asy Bono he'll say his music is Rock and Roll. Music is music you either like it or don't.
