BROUGHTON WINGS SOUL CLUB I have left this posting until now as I thought there may have been a slim chance of having a slight reprieve, but I lost the fight and I am afraid COVID won. This month of December would have seen our now famous Charity Night Special and Soul For Santa. It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that Broughton Wings Soul Club will no longer be able to go ahead at the Sports and Social Club. Many of us knew that the club would have to close at the end of 2020 and a new club was being built. The new club is due to be completed sometime during January/February. When completed I have been asked to look at the new club and see if it would be suitable as a venue. I must be honest and say at this stage I don’t really know as the design concept is very different to the existing club. We will just have to wait and see. It should have been the 20th Anniversary back in June and again because of the situation like all soul venues this could not go ahead. Running consistently for 20 Years is something to be extremely proud of. So, I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge heartfelt thanks to the following, To everyone who has given their support to put Broughton on the Soul Map. To the bar staff who kept the flow of drinks going all night. To all the Guest DJs over the last 20 years who have entertained everyone. So many to mention, but special thanks go out to Chico who we all miss so much. To everyone who dug deep in their pockets and helped to raise just over £20,000 for the charity nights I arranged. Benefiting the likes of Breast Cancer Trust, Dementia UK, The Homeless Society Smiles For Miles Children’s Charity and so many, many more. To everyone, who’s unbelievable generosity in donating toys for our Christmas Soul For Santa which went at Christmas to the sick children at Hope House Hospice and Wrexham and Chester Children’s Wards. To Steve Thomas for running the Up, Up And Away Broughton Website. Finally, to two people. My great friend of 50 years. Soul Sam whose enthusiasm, knowledge, and his ability to entertain everyone, no matter what soul music you like. To my wife Sue who has helped in so many, many ways, a personal thank you. I know I have gone on a bit, but it had to be said. We all love soul music but staying safe and healthy in this current climate and these uncertain times is far more important. Have the best Christmas you can possibly have and here is hoping for a better 2021 for all. I hope to be spinning those pieces of plastic somewhere at some point in the future. Kev.

I met Tami Lynn in about 1971/72 at Minskys Club in Wrexham on a Wednesday night. Soul Sam used to play there on a Wednesday and Tami Lynn was promoting I'm Gonna Run Away From You and was with some Mojo Label people. A lovely lady and she had the most amazing afro hair do. Still remains one of my favourite records. Kev

Yes, I am pretty sure that was the guy. I normally dealt with his wife, I asked if could call as I was working in Newport at the time but they were not that keen. Picked up a Dee Dee Warwicke - Worth Every Tear I Cry. Happy Days !

Did anyone manage to buy any records off the couple from South Wales who had bought out the British Forces radio station in Cyprus. There were great buys in the beginning and then they got really wise to prices. I had quite a number of British releases, all mint and in company sleeves. Mid nineties if memory serves me well.

Whitchurch Civic is in Whitchurch Shropshire. It was THE place in the early 70s with the famous All - Dayers and great acts every Saturday. Ben. E King, Jimmy Ruffin, Jimmy James, Stylistics, Real Thing etc. etc. with all the popular soul artists of the day, plus Slade, Shakin Stevens and Showaddywaddy. With Soul Sam upstairs and many travellers from the Midlands, Ellesmere Port, Chester and Wrexham. Free buses as well. Great days had by all. Tony Petherbridge was the promoter and he founded the International Soul Club. Anyone else out there have fond memories of the Civic ? Kev

Go for a Phillips CD Recorder, preferably the double drawer which also does cd to cd. Buy good quality Audio CD Recording discs preferably Phillips or Maxell. Both players and discs on Ebay, but be sure to get a player that is guaranteed as working as there are loads that are advertised as faulty. I have made hundreds of discs which are vinyl to cd. They record as good a quality as the vinyl. Best of luck. Kev

It was a really great weekend. Music was superb in all rooms and the pub. OK the weather was miserable and cold but that did'nt stop what was a weekender enjoyed by all ( I would think ). It just goes to show that a great time can be enjoyed by soulies and in North Wales of course, even though the weather was against people. I really felt for the people who could not get there and I am sure that there was a lot that tried hard. Out of 10, a ten from Len. Kev

What sad, sad news. For me one of the really great singers who had so many memorable hits not just with The Temptations, but solo and also with The Contours. "It Was The Third Of September" , an all time great. Also his lead on The Contours version of It's Growing, just superb. Plus so many others. RIP Mr. Edwards you were simply wonderful. Kev Jones
