Don't put yourself down Moldie..You're not completely bald yet are you?! Anyway, seeing this thread today made me hook out out the Hutson I and II + Closer to the Source albums tonight and have a listen after a good few years. Forgot how good they were and don't cost a packet these days, I don't think. Having done that, I have to agree that "You'll get to this..(you'll get to me)" is one of the strongest tracks. That LP is what actually got me interested in 70's soul in my late teens, picking this up in a 2nd hand record shop, not knowing who the hell Hutson was! Think I'll start a thread about "coolest pose in cream three piece suit ever to be seen on an LP cover"...Hutson would win it on this album methinks Anyway, sorry Sean...hope you get the 45 you're after and sorry to ramble on your thread! Steve

Does seem to be more 45's moving from set sale to auction doesn't there. I personally prefer to see a price and decide there and then. Sorry...I should have been more clear, I remembered seeing it in the auction link on Pat's website when surfing to see what was about a few days ago: https://www..co.uk/auctions_view.asp?records=2 Good luck with it..maybe someone on SS will have one for sale too. Cheers, Steve

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Scotters replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
Quite some thread in the space of a week hey Lou?! I've certainly found it interesting following this subject and once again would like to add that as a relatively new joiner (but now regular attendee at a growing number of nights), I'm really enjoying wherever I go to most weekends and it looks to me like all others I see are too, even if some don't always look like it from their facial expressions at the time! I feel quite lucky that I have a good choice of events to go to...both locally & nationally, and whilst I completely understand many of the posts on here regarding too many events diluting things over the years, I can't comment too much as I wasn't around when things were greatly different. I think it's healthy to have choice of some good regular(ish) local events as well as big known "national" or "regional" weekenders / nighters. Not so healthy when "local" events clash for whatever reason. I've only been to a couple of multi room events and tended to spend more time outside the main room at each event, as I personally prefer the atmosphere of a smaller room and being able to pop up and see what's being played from time to time etc, but that said, it's amazing to then see 1000+ people enjoying themselves in a single massive room now and then. Your closing comment got me thinking, maybe there ought to maybe an official annual "soul census" or something?! Could maybe sum up in one place how many soul nights running / average numbers attending / average ages / music policy etc etc. We already have this I guess, in the form of Soul Source and all the many different threads and posts on here, but to see something in the same format each time, that captures all this stuff in one easy to read place might be an interesting.....or not!! All the best, Steve -
For me it's got to be RHONDA DAVIS - Can you remember (Duke 473) Thanks again Len (at least you got a nice pink demo to replace your issue!) All the best, Steve.

Very nice...Just heard for first time and reminds me of something else a bit faster, but can't think what at the mo....backing is a bit like a track from one of Incognito's early albums...maybe they sampled this or something like it. Great, but not sure I'll be using the kids savings for this one mind!

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Scotters replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
As a relative newbie to "the scene" (a late starter yes, but a soul lover in its many forms since my teens) I've had the best 12 months musically and socially since I met Len and Co here in Northants last August. I've really enjoyed many different local nights as well as first timer this year to Brid, Boomerang, Stoke & Lifeline (all of which I'll go to again and more I want to try)...hearing amazing new records all the time and still loving most of the ones I do know well. Learning so much about the scene as it was and as it is now, but no spring chicken myself at 40, it does leave me wondering why more people my age and younger are not also enjoying this AMAZING music. Another thread on this somewhere I'm sure! With much respect to all of you who've been riding the highs and lows of Northern Soul over many years, as it does seem like hard work sometimes, even through my relatively new eyes. Steve -
Not really songs about having a baby, but titles are apt I think! "What have I done" - Billy Stewart "Too late to turn back now" - Cornelius Bros & Sister Rose "The beginning of my life" - The Chimes "What hurts" - Grover Mitchell "Pushing a good thing too far" - Sandy Williams "I can't wait until I see my baby's face" - Pat Thomas + various others "Happiness is here" - Tobi Lark "My sweet Baby" - The Puzzles "Baby let me teach you" - Zena Foster "The best thing for you baby" - Gloria Parker "Love won't wear off (as the years wear on)" - Universal Joint :D CONGRATULATIONS ANYWAY and all the best, Steve

Not a "numpty" question at all IMO, as confuses the hell out of me for sure. Interesting thanks. Just checked and found the raised stamp under the Epitome of Sound label, which I never knew existed even though I was sure it was a pukka issue. Any more 45's like that anyone? Thanks for posting the link Flynny...That is SERIOUS anorak territory for sure, having just had a quick peek, but I'll be having a proper read through sometime and have stored for future reference. PS...Thanks again for the real quick delivery & strong packaging for the 45 I had form you last week! Cheers, Steve

Cheers for letting me have a go...and for the surprise (organised!) early dancing by all to the first record ...I'd have started with something different if I'd known that was going to happen!! Funny. Never posted a "playlist" before, but since you both made the effort (also as Lou told me I had to!) here goes: Moses Smith - Keep on striving (Cotillion) Barbara Lynn - This is the thanks I get (Atlantic) The Fantaisions - Unnecessary tears (Satellite) The Enchanted Five - Darling I need you now (CVS) Margie Joseph - One more chance (Volt) J P Robinson - Our day is here (Blue Candle) Willie Hutch - Lucky to be loved by you (RCA) LP track from "Soul Portrait" album Frank Dell - He broke your game wide open (Guinness) LP track from "Yesterdays People" album Clydie King - My love grows deeper (Imperial) Lewis Clark - I need your lovin' so bad (Tigertown) Towana & The Total Destruction - Help me get that feelin' back again (Romark) The Volumes - I just can't help myself (American Arts) The Lovettes - I need a guy (Carnival) Carl Hall - You're so qualified (Mercury) J P Robinson - Keep me satisfied (Blue Candle) The Esquires - How could it be (Bunky) Sunny & The Sunliners - If I could see you now (Key-loc) The Voice Masters - If a woman catches a fool (Bamboo) Rhonda Davis - Can you remember (Duke) Choice of Colour - Your love (APT) Imperial Wonders - You live only once (Solid Foundation) Albert Jones - Fifteen cent love (Kapp) Unique Blend - Yes I'm in love (Eastbound) The Paramount Four - Sorry aint the word (Kent 6T's) Alex Brown - I'm not responsibe (Sundi) Cheers, Steve

Ditto...Only seen it on 12" until just now, when I learn it came out on UK Motown (1267) and goes for about £50 these days, as Brian quoted. Cheaper to get the Poet LP! Cheers.

Hi Rich..Hope you're well. Rob Moss maybe? He's got a fair few unissued Detroit i think. He did a spot at Banbury last Saturday (which I couldn't make) but his playlist is under the look back for that night + try looking at his Halyey website. He was also playing a lot of unissued Detroit on Banbury Internet Radio this Tues night for couple hours, which I think is repeated Sunday lunchtime. Cheers, Steve

1975/76 and think I paid about £40 or £50 for a mint yellow (first issue) sometime late last year. Guess they go for slightly less and I think the orange one goes for about half that? Cheers, Steve

Managed to get my hands on an Alex Brown issue earlier this year and think I listen to it most days (sad, but what a song! Still looking for the LP mind, if anyone has one for sale?!!). Likewise the Moses Smith and Margie Joseph 45's quoted are great too IMO. Lots of others named so far I don't know and will enjoy looking up, so thanks for starting this Russ as I might finally learn what is and what isn't classed as such. Okay I'm maybe going to get corrected here on my interpretation of "Crossover" (I'm a simple man & to me it's just all soul), and hard to just pick 5 but here's some I have just picked out the box and maybe qualify?: Albert Jones - Fifteen cent love (Kapp) Choice of Colour - Your love (APT) Rhonda Davis - Can you remember (Duke)...Thanks again Len! Fantastic Puzzles - Come back (New Moon) Unique Blend - Yes I'm in love (Eastbound) LP wise, what about Gloria Scott - What am I gonna do / Ronn Matlock - You got the best of me / Leroy Hutson - Don't it make you feel good....and the like...or are these just classed as 70's soul? I get confused what to call them so generally don't try, other than by which decade they came out. Guessing I'm not alone on that one. Cheers, Steve

Think you're right, Noel has an amazing voice and I remember buying his "Family" and "Fight" 45's + a few others years ago (early 90's I think?). He's still writing new stuff today? Great..I'll have to have a look and listen. Cheers

Love the Cookin' on 3 Burners 45 from a couple of years back with Kylie Auldist on vocals, also Kings Go Forth (tracks like "Don't take my Shadow" & "You're the one") or am I out of date already?! Incognito, D-Influence, Angie Stone + loads more all great over recent years too I think.

Swan Flight are pretty good for the money too + all kinds of sizes and with ability to padlock the valuables in. Just google that name and you'll see their main site. Cheers, Steve

Interesting post this! Compilations have certainly been my main way of being able to discover and listen to all kinds of amazing soul since I started buying records mid 80's in my teens. Still buying them now, but not so regularly as I think the quality has dropped in recent years (or I've just not been looking hard enough, which is maybe more the truth!) and have to confess to now being hooked on also trying to collect original 45's, mostly from 60's & 70's, which is darn expensive but oh so addictive & rewarding! Anyway (and sorry of these are a bit "modern" for this thread!) but for me personally I think some of the best ones I have and still listen to regularly are: "RARE" 1,2,3,4 & 5 (came out '87 to '89 and mostly RCA & Arista & Ariola) - Tracks like Michael Wycoff - Looking up to you / Garland Green - I've quit running the streets / Bill Harris - Am I cold am I hot / The Futures - Ain't no time fa nothin' / Fred Watson - Soft tender touch etc. "Soul chasers" 1 & 2 (came out around '93/'94 I think..Expansion records...Richard Searling comps) - Tracks like Gloria Scott - (a case of) too much love makin' / Collins & Collins - Top of the stairs / Jon Lucien - Would you believe in me / L J Reynolds - Call me / Magic Lady - Hold tight / Ronn Matlock - I can't forget about you / Trumains - Ripe for the pickin' / Donny Hathaway - Love, love, love "Modern soul, livin' for the weekend" (great double LP from 2002 on IRMA Italy) - Tracks like Bottom & Company - Gonna find a true love / Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose - Big time lover / General Johnson - Don't walk away / Eugene Record - Overdose of joy Then I think what actually got me looking back further at Northern soul approx 10 years ago was a comp by Richard Sealing called "After Hours" and various other great Northern soul comps on Kent etc...Too many great songs to list + I got to go now, but will be back if the thread goes on!... Cheers, Steve

No idea of value but thanks for reminding me about this one...I only have it on a compilation that Expansion put together in 1994 ("Soul chasers vol 2"), which has some other lovely soul like this and I think is still available through Soul Brother Records if you're interested. (Soul chasers Vol 1 was great too and I think they only did the two, sadly, unless someone can tell me different?) Cheers, Steve

Only heard this for first time a few weeks back. AMAZING! Got all excited when I spotted a near mint for sale through Pat Brady, but then back to earth with a bump seeing how far out of my price range. Learned yesterday he sold it to a pal of his, so guess you could always contact Pat & see if his friend would accept an offer. Cheers. Steve

Didn't see this thread until after I'd bid for this 45 on evil bay last night, but looks like I bid okay as won it at £50 (quoted as "VG++".. but I wait to see!), so thanks for this post. Don't think I heard the song anywhere before, so a nice uplifting one to add to the collection. Cheers, Steve

Try giving Pat Brady a call...I think he's got one in. Out of my price range unfortunately, but AMAZING song. You lucky owners you! Cheers, Steve
