Yes I heard something like this too. Also heard about use of old car tyres or something. Sound really bad but no probs if you drop them Hadn't seen this original thread in December, so found it interesting to have a quick read / look just now before going back to work. Also good to see how all my edge-warped and off-centre records were created! Cheers, Steve.

John Anderson's Soul Junction Does It Again, Hopkins Bros
Scotters replied to Dave Thorley's topic in All About the SOUL
Superb record and sure will be nice to have it on a 45 to play at home, but I also hope it doesn't stop me hearing / dancing (sort of!) to the original played out by those who've been lucky enough to have one. -
That's a good  from me too! Thanks for your kind (and slightly mad) words Mel! I don't think Ted will be feeling any pressure like I did, knowing I was the warm up YTS guest the week before he goes on there! As for the so called "rankings" that Nick seems to have created for Northants ....Yeah right!...I'm happier to be off-radar to be honest! Thanks also for looking after us on the show...food & drink & trying to keep the chat room in some sort of order! Great. Cheers to all who listened and fed back about certain records and things at the time in the chat room, as the growing number of regulars do each week of course. Also a couple of new converts too I noted. Look forward to listening in to Ted & his selection next week, although not sure my Missus will be as happy when I tell her that Valentines night is on Weds 15th Feb this year rather than Tues 14th Cheers, Steve

Blimey Mel, I was nervous enough before I read your post, but now I've seen my name on here in big red font..... .... 3 hours AND following such great other guests over recent months (+ Mr Massey next week I understand?!). No pressure then! Hopefully I'll be cut some slack, as a regular listener of this great stepping stone of a show which breaks each week up so well for a growing number of us. The chat room wasn't up and running the first time I had a go on there last May, so that'll be interesting! It is as you quote, an Across The Board show, so I'll be bringing a few from each decade.... Will be mostly 60's & 70's (yes, I'll leave most of the soul releases I actually "grew up" with in the 80's/90's on the shelves!) and will try my best not to repeat too much of what other guests have played on there this last few months. Thanks again for the opportunity to play a few outside the house and see you there. Cheers, Steve.

What Are Your Thoughts On This, Heard It On The Radio

Sorry Andy...Hurt my ears too. Could only stand 10 seconds to be honest -
Value Please Bobby Thurston Mainline Lp Original
Scotters replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Great LP, although not sure about the cover design ! I somehow "lost" mine a couple of years ago and wouldn't mind replacing it, but not sure I'd want to pay much more than £200 for a near mint condition one on Mainline. Sadly no spare funds available at the mo or I'd maybe make you an offer Pete. I think even the Expansion "Special Reserve" UK issue 45 which had "Ask me" on one side and another track form the LP (which I can't immediately remember) fetches about £50 these days? Cheers, Steve -
Alex Brown - In Search Of Love - Sundi - Lp - 1977
Scotters replied to The Tempest's topic in Look At Your Box
I'd like one too please ...Been looking since I picked up her sublime 45 "I'm not responsible" just over a year ago. One day maybe. Trouble is, I'm guessing there's a fair few of us who'd love to have a copy, hence price could go bit silly if a good one comes up for sale Anyway, on the bright side, 100's more amazing cheaper soul LP's to cross off the wants lists first hey?! All the best, Steve -
Mixcloud - Ooh Ello Ere We Go Agin, Is It Tuesday Already
Scotters replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Good to meet you Sat night Andy. Unfortunately missed your spot but some great records there for sure....and during the rest of the night too of course. All the best, Steve -
Yes, Andy Davies & Co...Some superb releases this last couple of years, old and new (not sure about record centres though!)

"How could it be"....maybe a bit obvious, but I love it

Xavier - Peace & Free...from '93: Totally not Northern Soul but I enjoy all kinds of soul and dance music and remember this one from nearly 20 years ago. Steve

Articles: BBC Newsnights Paul Mason talks Northern
Scotters replied to Mike's topic in Front Page News & Articles
Great read that, and can only begin to imagine how amazing it must've been back then, hearing so many unbelievable records for the first time in such a "had to be there" venue like that. Thanks for posting!- 50 comments

Great...and I'm sure I'm not alone in agreeing with you Steve ref your comment about the superb Spencer Wiggins 45 from last year! Also agree that the Marjorie Ingram needs to be heard out more. I look forward to seeing future articles and reviews, both yours and other knowledgeable writers / collectors / dealers etc, as there's some amazing previously unreleased tracks still being found and properly issued by the various individuals and labels you quote, and more besides. For a vinyl loving soul fan on a budget, this is excellent news All the best, Steve.

....and she's STILL going strong! Have recently acquired a copy of "Life" on Alston. Great. Also well worth getting a copy of the CD she did with The Roots last year "Betty Wright The Movie"...Lots of great tracks but the stand out for me on there is "In the middle of the game". Hope it gets a 7" release this year:

Just listened for first time to the Sugar Boy & Shades of Black 45 quoted above. Love it, but doubt very much in my price range, even if I could ever find one! Personally I'm gonna TRY and stick to affordable records, 60's to current. In terms of current soul, I'll be looking out for more from the likes of JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound (I think their track "To love someone that don't love you" is just sublime), DeRobert and the Half-Truths (eg, "The Joy" is lovely modern feel-good track) Westcoast Soulstars, The Teenagers, Kings go Forth and other great / tight bands like these. Also more new releases from long-established soul artists like Betty Wright...Does anyone know if "In the middle of the game" is going to be released on a 45 soon?! I hope so. Was great performance of this on Jools Holland the other night. All the best for 2012, Steve.

Jools Holland - Hootenanny . Betty Wright Appearing
Scotters replied to Ian Parker's topic in All About the SOUL
Wow that was good last night! Worth staying in for . I loved the first track Betty sang "In the middle of the game" from the great album released last year. What a voice...Ruby too of course. Great diverse show I thought, and how good are Jool's band? Not sure it's common knowledge that a few members formed a separate band a couple of years ago called "Fillet of Soul", who, along with some other great musicians and singers play some local nights every so often here in Northants (the most recent being just last week, where there was over 400 people in the room enjoying what they do brilliantly). Keep an eye out for more dates. They don't advertise the events on SoulSource, but I might do for them this year with their agreement, as they need to be heard IMO. All the best and Happy New Year, Steve -
I have this on Wingate (thanks Len) but was originally a B side to "Baby Boy" on Golden World I believe:

The Debonaires - How's your new love treating you. Picked up a lovely condition copy of this at a record bar earlier this year. Hadn't heard it before and blew me away on first listen. Still does now many more plays later. There is SO much amazing affordable soul out there...a fair bit of it on this great label I imagine.

Was indeed great show and great fun (again!). Lenny Dopson is guest next Tuesday

Very sad news, as with so many other amazing influential soul artists, writers etc this year it seems. I can distinctly remember hearing In Crowd and Out On The Floor for the very first time at a school disco circa '82/3 when I was 11 or 12 and listening / watching some older kids dancing "differently" to these and other great records like them. For me at the time stood out clearly as being so much different / better than most of the other music at those regular school discos. I watched and joined in and somehow knew there and then that soul / dance music would firmly be in my life. It remains so and always will. Thanks for that Dobie Gray and RIP
