Was good fun listening to that Tues night Moldie. Sounded like you had a great night too One or two were new to my ears, including the gorgeous "Caesars - Girl I miss you". All the best, Steve

Thanks for the info so far. I've seen a few of the Spanish issues of the Tighten Up 45 which have "A Thousand Wonders" on the flip (ie the TSU Toronados version that's on the Tighten Up LP) and same pic sleeve design as the LP, which I guess is partly why that particular 45 can fetch circa twice the amount the LP goes for as it's maybe rarer and I guess more desirable for DJing with and for collectors. Without going off topic too much, and with reference to the notes on the LP which I quoted, does anyone know which tracks (on that LP or otherwise) were recorded with Sunny & The Sunliners?...I only have one 45 of theirs "If I could see you now", which I think is great, but just curious. Thanks, Steve.

Not sure if this has been on here before but I was listening to the Archie Bell & The Drells "Tighten Up" LP last night (a few versions of this I think, mine is the SC8181 with green/blue label on Atlantic) and I know the superb "A Thousand Wonders" was also on the B side of Spanish issue of their Tighten Up 45. I always thought this LP track was just a different version by TSU Toronados (their original issue on Ovide has different tempo / backing and clearly changes hands for a whole lot more!), but wanted to find out more. The LP notes quote: "When we record Archie Bell & the Drells in Houston we back them with the city's Number One Soul Band, the TSU Toronados. The Drells and the Toronados together have a thing going that is just too much". Goes on to say..."When we are in San Antionio we back the boys with Sunny and the Sunliners, another fine swing band". Anyway, I was searching for more info on this and found an interesting article /website whilst trying to learn more and thought someone other than me might also be interested: https://solidhitsoul.com/tsutoronados.html Cheers, Steve.

Ahh that's when the passion comes in to it for me, after I've (over!) spent the monthly budget...to then get around the charity shops or the odd car boot sale etc to find some 45's or LP's, which don't have to be anything rare...just a thrill to know you've picked a record up for 50p or whatever and still can't wait to get home to play it!
-
Picked up a couple dozen records from local charity shop this morning (including Bobby Womack Poet II LP for 50p ) and made me laugh + recall seeing this thread when I got home and played some just now: McFadden & Whitehead - Aint no stoppin' us now (PIR 13 7365) a WHOPPING 10 MINS 45 SECS Made me laugh on the flip too as I reckon it's the longest run-in I've ever seen on a record. Got to be a whole inch of it until you get to "I got the love" (which is a mere 3 mins 32 secs...and I think quite a good track actually). ...Still, at 25p for this near mint 12' and a good dozen more like it, I'm not complaining
-
Couldn't agree more with great description on how it feels to get hold of records you hear and then just have to hunt down / lose sleep over / own / hold / smell / stoke / stare at (oh, and listen to of course!)...no matter what the value. Urm yes, madness and passion are two of the many ingredients required I think. I'm still trying to convince the missus that it's "just another way of saving"
-
Read the thread topic and thought for a mo that someone was starting a nighter playing just 80's . Sorry I've not helped with original Q but did make me look / wonder. Good luck with your quest.
-
What was the 45..."I'm amazed"?! I've had a delivery like that before too, and record was also amazingly okay. Compare that to some that are packed so well you feel like a kid at Christmas as you eagerly go through the various layers. Great

Well done on your first post in SoulSource Topsy! (with a little help from your "PA" no doubt! lol). Will be listening as usual. All the best, Steve

Best Version Of I Can't Wait To See My Baby's Face?
Scotters replied to TommieOnTheSpot's topic in All About the SOUL
Just had a listen. Agree..."Don't hold back" (which I think was actually the A side). Different sort of good Northern. Had forgotten about that. Cheers -
Looking To Identify A Record Not Northern

Jade - Don't walk away. Early 90's......blimey that's 20 years old already. Does that make it an "oldie"?! -

Best Version Of I Can't Wait To See My Baby's Face?

Any version of this song great to my ears. Love different versions of same songs. Why does there have to be a "best"? I actually like the Spyder Turner version as I was happy to pick that LP up real cheap, also think Monticellos is great (both have same backing I think). Pat Thomas sounds great and looks great on Verve I think. Love Aretha, Sonji Clay, Baby Washington + Dusty versions too. Dontells is new to my ears, so thanks for that. -
Blimey...must be dozens. Couple to get started: James Brown - Night Train / Don Thomas - Come on Train. Steve

Great show tonight. thanks. My "wants" list just got a whole lot longer (again!). Eddie...you're the man

Just looked at the yellow label one I have and matrix is simply "002-45" at about 5 o'clock on one side, also with a small "H" at around 11 o'clock on that same side, then just "001-45" on the other side, again with a small "H" but less visible. I hope it's original as I think I paid couple hundred dollars from a highly rated ebay seller about 18 months or so ago. Maybe I shouldn't ask
-
This too come to think of it (which I have on the DAU label, which I think is a little rarer than the Brunswick? Not sure which was first or both same time?)...
-
Sorry if a bit obvious but one of the first original US 45's I purchased and still love it now

Which Dj's On The Northern Soul Scene Have Got The Balance Right
Scotters replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Recall we had a natter in the car about this and plenty besides on Sat night Len...Maybe it means "soul-life / work-life / home-life" balance?! That'll be not many then I imagine, especially if you factor in time on here! Steve -
Which Dj's On The Northern Soul Scene Have Got The Balance Right
Scotters replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Having only really started my "education" / "journey" of some of the many great nights & niters outside my home county when I can this last 12-18 months (I'm now officially Len's driver and saving him a small fortune in taxi fares ), I still keep an open mind when it comes to a venue and DJ's...both the BIG established national names and also the more locally based DJ's / collectors...who can be equally great to my ears and tastes at times. Got to agree with some of the above names whom I've now seen and heard a few times (even one or two, like Soul Sam, I've had the pleasure to speak with at length about some records and stuff and hope they can pass on some "knowledge"....and some affordable records!). Sam sure like playing with the balance and EQ settings from what I've seen , but I think gets the music balance right every time from what I've experienced. Whether its collectors who are also DJ's or DJ's who are sort of collectors, those who put themselves up there week in week out, invest so much of their income and time on soul and have a following / try their best to give people a good hour or so of what they passionately believe to be great soul music, whether it be local or national....long may it continue, as I for one am loving this in my life. Cheers, Steve. -

Of All The Names You Wouldn't Want On Your Label
Scotters replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Oh dear! Tipp-Ex is a wonderful invention. -
Very sad news yet again, even more so given her age. Certainly some voice and some life too I'm sure, if not always positive for her.

Thanks again for your kind words of feedback Garv. No podcast facility on BIR as yet, but it's coming I believe. In the meantime I think it's repeated today at midday. So for anyone who's at a loose end and near a PC this lunchtime from 12 'till 3, feel free to log in and listen: www.banburyinternetradio.com and click on your preferred listening method (WMP / Real Player etc). As a heads up of what I played after Nick opened the show with a few: The first 45 mins or so was focussed on what I think are some great affordable 45's....Recent(ish) releases from The Teenagers (levels were all out for this first one, but then sorted!), DeRobert & the Half-Truths, JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound, Patrick Henry....Some great previously unreleased 45's on Kent Select / Hayley / Soul Junction from likes of Spencer Wiggins, Willie Bollinger, Sy Hightower, Natural Impulse....and some great original 70's from Phyllis Hyman, Patti York (Thanks again Steve Plumb for that one! ). The second hour was focussed on what I think are some great double-siders, playing both sides of original 45's by artists such as Bottom & Company, Margie Joseph, The Innersection, JP Robinson, The Dynells, The Prophets...+ fave sides from The Lovettes, The Lovations, Lillian Dupree, Towana & The Total Destruction, The Enchanted Five. Third hour was just a few more of my current fave 60's / 70's original 45's from artists such as Jackson Sisters, The Enchanted Five, The Chaumonts, Choice of Colour, Clay Brown, Nick Allen, Mixed Feelings, Viola Wills, Lorraine Rudolph, Sandra Phillips, Jo Ann Garrett, The Puzzles, The Enticers, Jesse James, James Walsh Gypsy Band, Fir-ya, Bobby Thurston & The Dells. Thanks again to Nick for having me on, to Mel for food, drink, banter & chat room stuff, to Banbury Soul Club for making me feel even more nervous in the studio and for all those who listened and gave banter + shared knowledge of records etc in the chat room at the time. Ted Massey is special guest this coming Tuesday night, and I'll certainly be listening from 8pm as usual. Cheers, Steve

I've acquired a few of the Swan boxes over recent years and they look / feel like they could be handed down through generations even if bashed around a bit in the car boot etc. Top quality and very good price. Not so great for stacking on top of each other, but not many record boxes are from what I've seen.
