I'd heard this too but have not seen one (unless mine is and I don't know that ) Green / black label as opposed to green / brown? Or is there another easy way to know which is which? Steve
-
Brilliant record and don't see it come up much but guessing £50-£75ish? I recently heard this alternative version by Rock'n Co which seems to be rarer / more expensive, but I prefer Imperial Wonders as it's much more uplifting to my ears.
-
Bit of a long shot, but was it Wilton Felder ft Bobby Womack - "(No matter how high I get) I'll still be looking up"? I think that was c84/85 and black label. I picked this up in a 2nd hand shop in late 80's for next to nothing not knowing what it was but just blown away by the soul in Bobby's vocals. Also "inherit the Wind", but that was much earlier 80's I think. Cheers, Steve

Great track from the "Live" (but not really live ) LP on MFP Music For Pleasure, but never a single as far as I know. I remember getting the LP from a local 2nd hand shop for not much more than 50p with a few others like it, then not playing it for many years, only to then "re-discover" it after seeing the this track on one of Mr Hampsey's "They Call it Crossover" CD compilations a year or so ago. It is a real shame about the fake cheering at the start and end, but I forgive them as it was a long time ago Cheers, Steve.

As we all like looking through lists, here a few US 45's I'm in no rush to sell but happy to turn over if anyone interested at these reduced prices from last weeks posts. Let me know via PM. PM's on trades too if anyone interested in swapping some around as it's a New Year and all that?! Email photos or more info on request. All VG++ (Soulsource gradings) unless stated. Please add £2.50 for 1st class recorded in the UK or £5 for Special Delivery. Overseas extra. Thanks. Paypal: steve.scotney@sky.com or direct bank transfer. Thanks for looking, Steve Barbara Acklin - Raindrops / Here you come again (Capitol) - £10 £5 Kip Anderson - I get carried away / Here I am try me (Tomorrow DJ) - £40 £30 Paul Anka - I can't help loving you / Can't get along very well without her (RCA Orange 2nd issue) - £20 £15 Blossoms - That's when the tears start / Good, good lovin' (reprise). Clean but plays with some styrene burn / hiss on main side, hence VG and bargain price of £15 £10 Candy and the Kisses - Out in the streets again / Sweet & Lovely (Scepter) - WOL. £75 £50 Jean Carter - Like One / That boy ain't no good. £250 £200. Harder to find and gorgeous looking black Decca issue in company sleeve. I would grade both label and record as M- visibly but please note it is well documented that the quality of reproduction on the Decca recordings of this classic does suffer from some sound distortion, namely on the "Like One" side, whereas the later issue on MCA does not. That said, still sounds great on a big system IMO. Celestrals - Checkerboard Lover / I feel it coming on (Don-El) - £75 £50 Cynthia & the Imaginations - Is there anyone, anywhere / There's something the matter (Magic City) - £40 £35 James Duncan - All goodbyes ain't gone / You've gotta be strong (Federal) - £20 £15 Kelly Garrett - Loves the only answer / Knowing when to leave (Smash DJ) - £150. £125. Just seen what the "test press" sold for today...£1,365.
-
Best pay couple hundred quid more and get one of the demos which pop up from time to time. Sorry to have reactivated this thread but caught my eye as one of my favourite sounds and never tire of hearing it. Like so many records I sometimes find myself trying to imagine the band recording it, trying to imagine the look on the lead singer's face as he belts out the vocals. So sad that these guys and so many others like them didn't then go on to record and release more. Just over a year ago I was lucky enough to be involved in a local event where Soul Sam was guest DJ and unusually for me I made a request...this record. Before playing it he said real loud and clear on the mike something like "if you don't dance to this you don't have soul"! Lol. Floor was very busy and I was smack in the middle. Brilliant.

"Choice of genre " more like! That's exactly how I picked up a copy of this same great 45 real cheap a couple of years ago. Was listed under something completely different to "soul" from memory. Always worth searching beyond "soul" to find the odd one off radar!

2013 Cd Swap ********** Now Closed **********
Scotters replied to John Reed's topic in Look At Your Box
Count me in again please John. Many thanks, Steve. -
Bit of a mammoth early-doors spot last night at the first SIB of this year (from approx 7.15 through to 9pm!) but thanks again to Jem & Steve Brown for the opportunity as I really enjoyed playing this lot whilst the good people who came along were soon filling the main room and dancing earlier than I thought would be the case! Gulp!! Hopefully Steve Brown, Glen Bellamy, Dave Rimmer & Jem Brittin will add some of what they played too. Don't expect to see play lists from Len's Den mind you, as that's top secret The Dynells - Let me prove that I love you (Atco) Jean Wells - What have I got to lose (Calla) Margie Joseph - One more chance (Volt) Sharon Stone - You found my weak Spot (Coral) Towana & The Total Destruction - Help me get that feelin' back again (Romark) Sunday - Ain't got no problems (Alteen) Bobby Sheen - Sweet Sweet Love (Capitol) The Exits - Under the street lamp (Gemini) The Lovettes - I need a guy (Carnival) The Saphires - Gotta have your love (Abc) The Prophets - I don't love you no more (Jubilee) Joe Hinton - Got you on my mind (Back Beat) Unique Blend - Yes I'm in love (Eastbound) Albert Jones - Fifteen cent love (Kapp) Bobby Moore - Give me your love right now (Checker) Flora Wilson - Dancin' on a daydream (Soulvation Army) Otis Leavill - Why, Why, Why (Dakar) Willie Hutch - Lucky to be loved by you (RCA LP) Frank Dell - He broke your game wide open (Guinness LP) Barbara Lewis - The Stars (Enterprise LP) Archie Bell & The Drells - A thousand wonders (Atlantic LP) ZZ Hill - You just cheat and lie (Kent) Carl Hall - You're so qualified (Mercury) Lorraine Rudolph - Keep me coming back for more (Jet Stream) Imperial Wonders - You live only once (Solid Foundation) J.P. -
Drinking again Dave?! Lol. Brilliant record. I purchased a gorgeous condition US issue about 3 years ago without even knowing the "B" side (I'm a good 20 years or so behind most people on here!) which for me immediately became the "A" side. Just played it now real loud after a couple and still makes me shiver with the quality and depth of soul. So for me it was "discovered" in my house! Cheers, Steve.

That looks a fair price indeed and what a great record with the bonus of superb looking label!

Articles: Mark Randle's Modern Soul Musings 2013
Scotters replied to Mark R's topic in Front Page News & Articles
I would personally love to see more new releases posted, shared and commented on here. I know this is mainly a rare soul site, and the best. Some of us out here love the whole soul spectrum and this is by far the best forum and so much knowledge on here. Lets not limit ourselves with this amazing music as who knows what current releases might turn out to be the rare soul that DJ's and collectors are chasing down in decades to come. -
Seeing as this thread has been resurrected for 2013, I thought it might be worth adding the flip side to Lillian Dupree's "Hide and Seek", being the smooth Detroit side "(I've got a) shield around my heart". Cheers, Steve.
-
Nice way to start an otherwise dull Friday Recently been enjoying "repeat" function on CD for the Doc Peabody on this years SoulSource CD swap (someone with a VERY late entry to the post office...you know who you are! )... just superb. I managed to pick up the Sweet Pearl 45 a few months back after never hearing it before and falling in love with it on first few seconds of sound clip. Great when that happens hey. Anyone know if they did anything more as I can't find much on the band? I think I prefer the Imperial Wonders version of "You live only once" but did have the Changing Tymes version very briefly this year. Great. First heard the Pro-Fascination at Brid in the modern room a couple of years ago (Steve Jay I think played it)...sublime I think. The others are new to me so thanks for that. Mr Goucher has been sharing some amazing modern / crossover this year and maybe if he sees this thread he'll list some for us. Here's just one of hundreds I keep listening to over and over for some reason: Master Force "Hey Girl"
-
Please PM to reserve if interested. Very happy to send photos but I don't have MP3's of actual records. Paypal (as gift) to: steve.scotney@sky.com Uk mail....Recorded P&P included. Please add £3 for special. Anne Heywood - Crook His Little Finger / Everything under the Sun (Hondo. On the rarer yellow issue). M- £200 Garland Green - Girl I love you / It rained forty days and forty nights (Revue promo). M- £100 SOLD Rose St John and The Wonderettes - Mend my broken heart / and if I had my way (United Artists DJ). EX+ (just "K.S." WOL, but lovely clean copy aside from that)....£100 Wonderettes - I Feel Strange / Wait until tonight (United Artists Demo). M- £35 SOLD Blossoms - That's when the tears start / Good, Good Lovin' (Reprise). Clean label and only light surface marks with no crackles or pops, but unfortunately plays with some background Styrene hiss / burn. Might sound okay on big system for DJing? hence graded VG+ and priced at £20. Tempos - Don't leave me / I need you (Riley's). EX £40 Celestrals - Checkerboard Lover / I feel it coming on (Don-El). M- £50 Kip Anderson - I get carried away / Here I am, try me (Tomorrow Demo). M- £60 Billy Gibson - You got it, I want it / What I need now is love (MGM Demo). M- £20 Thanks for looking. Steve
-
Lovely record indeed and I'm not sure which came first...JR Bailey's version or Universal Joint. Quite different prices demand for each and either way....superb "goose bump" soul to my ears.
-
No that's it...you got it exactly right!
