  5. Merry Christmas & happy / healthy New Year everyone. Another great year for soul and personally looking forward to more of the same in 2018! Cheers, Steve
  6. Thanks to Brian (Len knew him first) Goucher for putting me onto many things again this year, including recent “new old” lp by Sugaray Rayford which has a few very decent tracks including this one. No expense spared on the video but at least its a video..a rare thing itself for real soul releases!
  7. Great shout re Split Decision Band LP and I’ve also really enjoyed that whole album this year Another LP which I think worth sharing for anyone not already aware, even though released in 2016 I didnt pick up on it until the start of this year, is The Chapells “Are you ready for the Chapells”..lovingly pulled together by those great guys & gals at Numero and sort of secretly issued under their monthly membership scheme last year rather than sold through stores or dealers etc. As well as the sublime sides from their 45 releases, some amazing unissued dancers and slowies, a bit lo-fi in places but I love it all the more for that. Great sleeve notes too. Anyway looks like there’s a few still lurking on Discogs etc if anyone needs it. Right...pub! Cheers everyone
  8. Following on from above I’ve just stumbled on this recent upload into youtube by Cannonball Records which includes a little of the original acetate recording of the huge Big Lee Dowell track from a couple of years ago. A sort of before & after when you play / watch it. Would love to see that untouched original released in that lovely raw slower mix!
  9. Thanks for the posts so far everyone, please keep it rolling as I’m hungry and need feeding some more new soul over Christmas! The next couple of 45 releases from Connonball Records sound good to me and can be pre-ordered now for the mid Jan release date
  10. ..not forgetting your own great show on Starpoint Mark! Anyway, back to new / recent releases, I missed this at the time of release this August, but Cliff Steele kindly sold me one this weekend. Not to all tastes I know but I really like it. Diamond Street Rhythm Machine “Living Harmony” on Gemco. I’ll be honest I was sold on the artwork alone and hadnt even listened to it when I handed over the cash https://www.gemcorecords.com/
  11. Quite a few as you say Dave! I flit around a bit between them all but I’m mostly listening each week via Podomatic etc to Mark Merry’s Soul Sermon on Starpoint, Mick O’Donnell’s Soul Discovery on Solar and Dave Halsall + others on 365Soul. Keep up the great work guys and Merry Christmas!
  12. Mostly yes but I buy and listen to lots of contemporary soul and other types of music too, all tempos. I agree, Mark’s superb Soul Sermon show and Mick’s equally great Soul Discovery show + many others are great for hearing new and old alongside each other, which is what I’ve always liked personally. To my ears most decent “new” soul sounds “old”..eg the brilliant Kim Tibbs you mention, most of those tracks could be 20-30 years old in their style, but I think with her tracks “Soul!” and “I need you for your love”, it’s that new take on those sweet-spot tempo grooves. Anything new with great vocals and production, real instrumentation (not always essential but I prefer to hear) and good quaility recording, soul or otherwise. I buy and enjoy covers of old songs when done well / differently too. Eg Syleena Johnson’s recent “Rebirth of Soul” album and Martha High’s “Tribute to my Soul Sisters”..both superb albums I think, but equally I hope such talented artists continue to release new and original material as well. New old, old new, new new. I love how we just keep layering even more genres to this wonderful music!
  13. Not for everyone on here I know but personally think it's been another great year for new soul releases / previously unissued releases. Anything recent and decent warming your cockles at the moment..vinyl, digital only or otherwise? The recent (sadly last) LP from Sharon Jones (R.I.P) & The Dap Kings has been on repeat in the car and in my office most days, as it will be over all of Christmas. I'm looking forward to the new James Hunter Six LP in a few weeks from Daptone that can be pre-ordered now. Catchy first track recently released as a download only for now "I don't wanna be without you": Still listening to this track on a regular basis by JR. Thomas and the Volcanos "What a Shame" on Colemine, + their LP from a couple of years ago on Truth & Soul is brilliant for anyone who likes a bit of reggae to forget about winter for a bit! The recent 45 by BAGS "Hey Girl" is lovely I think and was great to hear played out at the weekend towards the end of a soul night: Black Diamond with their "Best Thing" from late summer Lee Fields & The Expressions just pure class and this download only slowie "Time" slipped out a few months back, not on the recent LP as far as I remember: I could go on as I've had a couple of beers tonight, but anyway..over to ya'll and Merry Christmas! Cheers, Steve
  14. Another great compilation, hard to keep up with so many great releases this year! Really enjoying this cd over the last few weeks and the usual top quality notes & pics. I’ve completely lost myself in the prev unreleased Robert Montgomery track on more than one occasion, especially towards the end with the gorgeous backing harmonies flowing alongside Robert’s lead vocal. The Delegates of Soul track is so good and I regret not buying the 45 a few years ago when I had the chance at much cheaper price than I expect it would cost now. Great to have both sides of The Scott Three on cd too for quality audio (how young were those guys at the time?!) + loads more make this well worth buying. Cheers!
  15. Wow..Stunning album, been on repeat in the car all day today and again on the record player tonight. So sad it’s her last ever album release, unless Daptone have more unreleased recordings and material, which hopefully they’ll share in time if they have. I won’t attempt to review it as there’s plenty more capable people already doing so..just go buy and enjoy, no matter what preference your soul taste. Bless you and thank you Sharon Jones and your Dap Kings.
  16. Great to read that thanks and to hear some of their new material.. one or two of which I think they might have included in their gigs last year. They were brilliant in Northampton last Sept and certainly well worth seeing live. Ken can sure still belt out vocal and I think Thomas & Brandon are superb, the band too, all really know how to entertain a crowd. Cool photo I snapped last year and great to have a brief chat with them
  17. Another great release thanks! Brilliant to see this track getting wider attention and interesting to hear the Toppiks version and read all the info + photos. Think I first heard it out played by Steve G. Was fortunate to pick up a copy on IDB a few years ago but this release beats it on sound quality! Love the words too, listening again just now.
  18. Download only I thought? Great track introduced to me by the “Gouch” when it first got released / discovered. Not sure if the singer went on to do anything else? Shame if not. A later version with same backing track (artist name I cant remember at the mo) might have had a 7 or 12 release? Cheers, Steve Useful previous thread here:

  22. Hi Rob, I'll be very interested and grateful if you have the Soul Harmony Singles book (Jeff Beckmann) and/or Voices from the Shadows issues 20&21? Thanks. Steve
  23. Couple years on, so thought I'd throw this out there again to see if anyone might have a copy for trade(s) or sale sometime. No rush Cheers, Steve
  24. Thanks so much to DaveK for selling me issues 1-6 of Voices + some other really great reading material...much appreciate Dave! Paul...I'll be very happy to take issue 21 off your hands if you still have that please and if anyone else can then help me with issue 20, I'll be very grateful and will then be able to complete my Voices Bingo card and claim my prize from Rod Dearlove Cheers, Steve
  25. That matrix matches the one on my black vinyl copy Andy (ending S-1 on the Soul Pot side / S-22 on the Prayer side). I can't recall who I bought it from, when or how much paid, but looks near mint so wouldn't surprise me if this is a recent reissue or something rather than a 45 yr old record? Who knows, could well have been a recent(ish) find of a dozen or so from the early 70s and someone is dripping them out. I'd also be interested to learn more. Cheers. Steve This recent sale on eBay quotes a different matrix number and looked to be in less than great condition, so maybe there's the answer? https://www.popsike.com/SOUL-ONES-Soul-Pot-RARE-TEXAS-FUNK-45-DEAL-WSTAMPED-MATRIX-hear/382057157114.html
