  1. Yep pretty much agree with that John :-) The stuff that has crept in is very blues and rock influenced (rock and soul is one term I saw on a sales list, whatever next :-/ ). Dunno maybe they saw a way of making money by adding a dancable rhythm to the blues songs they were singing. Like we both said it isn't what Northern Soul evolved into, it left the mods to do their own thing, left the early R&B behind and went for uptempo (sometimes soulful ;-) ) dance music.
  2. True as it might be the Northern Scene evolved once it broke away from the Mod scene into it's own identity. Mainly uptempo dance music. Now records with a hard edge have always been spun (Cookie Jackson, Mickie Champion, Mac Saten etc) but over the last few years records with a different beat tempo and usually very early have worked their way onto the scene...I think these are the records we are talking about and either like or dislike.
  3. Should still be IMO, but I suppose it's the opinion of the buyer and seller that counts :-( F****** crazy for a record thats not that rare, not over a $1000 rare.
  4. I always thought this was a £150/£200 record. Still 5 days to go too...... https://offer.ebay.com/ws3/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...item=4007747747
  5. What on vinyl????? ask Butch, Kitch or Kenny Burrell, they have the only known copies ;-)
  6. Blues with rhythm, as the title suggests. No strings either????? What some consider R&B, i.e. Mickie Champion etc I consider straight down the middle uptempo Northern Soul. Don't consider it R&B in the slightest. Tough call really what is and what isn't, at least for us Brits, the Yanks just call it all R&B!!! ;-) We just love to pigeon hole stuff, especially dealers, and especially the indemand stuff as it helps sell other stock. The out and out R&B or Rock n Soul as some call it has no place in a Northern Room IMO ;-) Not what I want to hear anyway. Went in the R&B room at Prestatyn, about 6 of us, we lasted half a record before we all walked out, f*** knows what was being played but it was utter shit, in our opinions ;-)
  7. Mello Souls was 86 or 87 so qualifies. Sure someone said Magnetics first got a spin or two tail end of Wigan. Better known from the Stafford era though. Which Four Vandals ;-)
  8. Most of the rock and roll, sorry R&B is terrible and shouldn't IMO be played in northern rooms. That goes for country music too, Barbara Redd etc. Plenty of stuff from the mid wigan era too. Like someone says all down to personal taste. Shite played in all eras of the scene ;-)
  9. My guess is you already know or at least have heard things said ;-) BTW can't you put your name to your posts???? ;-)
  10. Well it does say in the last 20 years Dave :-) Wasn't Magnetics played at Wigan although better known for spins in the 80's??????
  11. "Cowboy" yes11 Not sure about the "soul" bit :-)
  12. Forgot to add if anyone can supply me with lesser known Stafford spins will be much appreciated, better still audio files, mp3 preferably.
  13. I'm currently in the process of doing a Stafford History in audio files (cd), up to about 750 tracks. Dave Thorley going to verify them all, add to etc, Robin Salter is hopefully gonna suppl;y some more Stafford Modern. Also have a few "live" tapes/cds etcd. Loads more but just don't have the time at the minute to do anything about it :-(
  14. Butch is without doubt the best DJ ever IMO. Would have been massive with his records in any era. Whereas DJ's of old had the pick of records when they were plentiful Butch continued to find them throughout much harder times and still does. His main venues nowadays are the 100 Club and the Lifeline al-nighter at Sheridans. Sheridans just happens to be this Saturday :-)
  15. Jerry Williams "be with me" .....trying to remember... not the "Ordinary Girl" the one Carl F spins too. Female intro singing "I'm Just An Ordinary Girl" before male vocal kicks in? Spins it still awesome record. Can stick a little soundbit up later when I dig it out, got it on a live 100 Club recording.
  16. HAve you got a scan of the Bobby Bennett?? Brilliant record pushed by Andy Dyson sometime back and Mich H alos played out. Was also booted on Jamaican label Affirmative, only 100 done.
  17. The best discovery in the last 20 years??? easy that one, Butch's Mello Souls - We Can Make It on Mello. Formerly known as The Del-Larks Just You And I, simply awesome, Northern Soul as good as it gets IMO. Close behind Butch's Diane Lewis c/u " You Ain't Got A Chance" and again Butch's JJ Jackson "Too Much love" c/u. Lots more but these 3 top the pile for me.
  18. Not hearing such good things about the Wilton lately, shame if it's the case usually enjoyed it when been. 100 Club good mix rare 6t's quality & oldies. Upfront venue is without doubt the Lifeline nighters, best music I've heard in years anywhere. Best soul nites are the Union and when Nick puts them on Scenesville, hopefully they will return in the future.
  19. Looks dodgy to me. Would need to see the whole disc too.
  20. File sharing and all the sites that are full of soul are maybe making the music too accessible?????? Maybe if the RIAA and the BPI (or whatever it's called) shut them down it will make folk go out again to hear the music again? ;-)
  21. Cheers Brian, but all credit should go to Andy Dyson and Mick H, i'm just the cyberspace advertising executive :-) Others help out too, Janine for a start hands the flyers out everywhere we go so down to a few the success of the night.
  22. Well the Lifeline crew have a policy of 60's with some 70's, upfront, lesser known, unknown, forgotten gems, anything but the played out or top 200/300. The night is advertised as such and folk warned not to ask for played out usual stuff in case they are offended by the reply ;-) The night itself was a roaring success, a sell out and a full dancefloor for most of the night, it was 11.30 Sunday morning when we left ;-) It does show there is a market there for the rare unknown, lesser known and forgotten gems and folk don't have to rely on the same old same.
  23. Well said John, couldn't agree more. If you or anyomne else fed up with watery northern soul, anthems top whatever then get along to the Lifeline all-nighter on 17th April and hear the rarest of the rare. Not just rare for the sake of it but dance floor orientated rare. The last one was a sell out, the only one yet at Sheridans. So if you want tickets got to the ad elsewhere on this site for Andy or MickH's contact details or give me a shout.
  24. One that Andy Dyson has been playing out. Certainly seems to be indemand once more.
  25. Legit or not, it's no better than a boot IMO. Could have nade it even more "legit" and authentic by including both sides of Tangeers. If it is legit the record company are just exploiting the current popularity of the two sides, same as bootleggers do ;-)
