  1. how long is the Curtis? The one I have here is 4 min 48 seconds?
  2. Humberside doesn't exist anymore does it? It's the East Riding of Yorkshire
  3. Whats the numbers in attendance at Burnley ( I read the reports on here but most lookbacks from a very vocal few and don't always get the full picture), not been for a while and when I did it was quiet although music very good? The Wilton has had it's fair share of poorly attended nights. Fridays just aren't an option for some due to work and family commitments. I worked out Lifelines dates (months in advance) so that no clashes with any other nighter or soul night, especially those who are trying to do something different. I got in touch with promoters to see what their plans were and this was working well. There was no clashes when I planned and subsequently advertised our dates, even with Friday night nighters. I don't think there was much else could have done to be honest.
  4. Yes, don't think there is any "might be" about it.
  5. Its the ending where she holds the note for what seems an age thats missing I think on one. I have it on a tape from years ago where that bit is missing.
  6. I'm not talking 50 miles, I'm talking the same town A 50 miles radius is or can be a large catchment area and could be healthy competition with no worries about how many through the door.
  7. between £10 and £25
  8. How on earth can two venues in the same city/town be healthy? Healthy for who? Certainly not he local soulies who forced to choose between one or the other rather than benefit from two venues on differing weekends. It can't be healthy for the promoter when the paying customers are spread over two venues and it's not healthy for the scene cause of the politics and arguements it causes. Some one else said if they want to put another promotion on it would have to be midweek, so why bother in the first place if the calendar locally is already so busy? I can't see the point of promoting a night when there is already another night in the same town/city just a handful of miles apart regardless of the music policy of either. I certainly wouldn't promote a night just 'cause I wanted to hear something different on the same night as a venue with a music policy I'm sick of hearing, I'd look for another date, look elsewhere or just not bother.
  9. IMO the only way you can try and pull it all together as you say is not too clash. If you constantly clash then you will get fragmentation and soulies preferring one promotion to another....and therefore more politics and arguements causing further fragmentation and splits in the local soul scene. Maybe if some common sense used then soulies would support all the venues in the area and all would prosper with decent attendances rather than half full venues.
  10. but if I was looking to promote a venue, I would just look to see if anything else on the night I wanted and avoid any possible clash, regardless of the music policy of other venues. I for one wouldn't promote a venue on the same night as an established venue, I would look for another date. Even oldies venues still need fresher sounds, you just have to look at some of the stuff played at oldies venues, even if it does take 20 years in some cases The good newer sounds still trickle down to the oldies venues and without the newies venues this wouldn't happen.
  11. send him my best wishes too Steve. Hope he's up n about soon.
  12. yes but if there are two promoters in the same town/city whats the point of both promotions on the same night? irrespective of the playlists/music policy. Surely it would be better to try and maximise your attendance by not being on the same night. Common sense as well if you ask me. The arguement that "we have a different music policy to you" does wash with me either, it's all northern soul/rare soul at the end of the day. Granted give soulies a choice but does it have to be on the same night? I think not when there are three other weekends in the month.
  13. I don't think playlists comes into the arguement in my opinion, or should I say they are irrelevant. At the end of the day it's all comes under the Northern Soul umbrella and putting a venue on in the same town/city as an established venue, whatever the policy, on the same night is pretty thoughless IMHO. Like I also said it often makes you wonder what the scene is coming to and where it's going! I've said it for a long time there are far too many venues in close proximity all over the country and not enough soulies to go round.
