The Europeans where the average age is far younger than the UK, the music policy differs greatly as well with elements of all genres thrown into the mix. Thats the first thing the UK scene has to do, go across the board. I don't mean the across the board clubs already profess to be "across the board" playing safe with the likes of Angie Stone and Drizabone, records with a strong northern flavour.
Dj's should be free to play from all eras, 60's, 70's, 80's, crossover...soul with a funkier flavour, anything that will attract the youngsters. There are very few venues than can claim to be really across the board and very few that do it properly.
Those that do have a strong younger audience, keen on the music and eager to come back for more. Those that continue with the 60's only policy or oldies will only see their audience coming through the doors on zimmers and for the lazy b*stards who can't be arsed to walk those annoying electirc buggies that seem to be the rage these days
