    composed by Gene McDaniels. He also did a version which someone asked about on the RSF some weeks ago but can't find a 60's version, can only find a more recent version. Did he cut one in the 60's? Les McCann the original cersion as far as I'm aware, thats who Gene wrote it for I think, so I read when looking into the track.

    The likes of Mercy have nothing to do with Northern and are far removed from the northern I've been listening to over 20 years. The only thing in common is the northern dancers... I've seen little influx of youngsters to the scene and I think we are highly unlikely to as well in sufficient numbers to continue the scene...the odd venue that do have yopungsters are the exception rather than the rule and many of those do not travel. why on earth would they want to go out with 400 folk old enough to be their mums dads and in some cases grand parents

    When I said Steve in charge I meant you gave him responsibility for that room, sure thats what he mentioned in conversation about the venue once. Rob Marriott charging the squad to get in, "don't give a f*ck who you are, tenner (or what ever the entrance fee was back then)"

    Yeah they were a complete set of b*stards!! Stopping the coaches and searching all who entered the car park in town centre!! They caught one person with a bit of gear from the six all-nighters. Think in the end the venue had to concede to the police as they were refused an extension for one of Colliery Brass Bands I think the stance of the police may have softened a bit now Dave, other all-nighters from other types of music have been held in the area and other clubs have been open all night. Might be worth a try again

    It was 1987 for I think 6 nighters. First one upstairs was northern and downstairs modern etc. Northern went downstairs and the upstairs became oldies room, Steve Smith in charge of that one I think??? The December one was Kebs last nighter outside London before going into retirement, got a rousing ovation that went on for ages and Guy was stood there tapping his feet waiting to start his set

    Lifeline's had three homes so far, Sheridans, the Fox @ Colsterworth and Old Bell @ Barnby Moor. We are moving as of April to Brookfields Club (The Stables) @ Shareshill, Wolverhampton. It's the home of New Century Soul Club too if it hasn't been mentioned already.

    Could have had a mention but I didn't see it (eyes a little tired), Winding Wheel in Chesterfield, best nighter venue I've ever been in.

    It's let down a touch by the femme backing, but it's a great northern dancer!! Sounds better and far more powerful out loud at a venue than it does at home.

    But how do you return your credibility when you go commercial, has it been done without ridicule and being looked down upon by soulies? The whole point of NS was it was an underground scene and some venues went to far with the commercialisation, (some would definately say Wigan did for a period) and therefore proabably lose some of the credibility gained during previous years? Anyway I'm off out now, have a good weekend whatever you do and where you go!!

    But if the man in the street knows about these venues then there's an aspect of commercialisation about these venues. But it's not about the man in the street, it's about the 100's of soulies who's life was influenced by Northern Soul/Rare Soul or whatever tag you wish to give it. The extent of the influence of these venues is as I said gonna be determined by what era any particular person grew up and where they went, not by column inches.

    There'll be many who went to Torch and maybe the Wheel who will disagree. There's many who went to the Mecca who used to look down on Wigan. Don't think we will ever agree on what was the 1st most important venue let alone the 2nd
