    cheers pal
  2. Had a mate, many from Chesterfield area will remember Sammy, he lost his leg but he still gave it some on the floor.
  3. The "foreign" DJ's if thats the right word don't by and large play anything we don't already know from many playlists I've seen, but it's their approach to it all that is refreshing, all genres in a night and they will get up and dance, even if they have never heard it before. They are willing to give any record a try and will not dismiss it cause it was played here or there or made after the 60's. PS... anyone got an mp3 of the Sammy Campbell - I Never Thought - Queen City

  7. I like a drink with the best of 'em Dave but IMHO nighters were a better place before all night drinking at them came into being. It was better with the drugs and soft drinks than it is now with alcohol. Most of the problem has been from locals after a late drink causing friction with soulies but there's also been more incidents amongst soulies in recent years than in previous years. Not saying they weren't there before but problems were probably kept away from venues but alcohol brings out the worst in people. It's ridiculous trying compare the affects of amphet after a nighter and alcohol during a nighter, what about all those over the limit on alcohol after a nighter driving home, alcohol is far worse than the amphet. Why not compare the effects of amphet during a nighter against the effects of alcohol during a nighter, I know which would come out worse....(not condoning drugs btw ) If you want all-night drinking then enforce a membership and keep out the local idiots looking for a late drink with no interest in the music, that would be a start.....or are all-night promoters more interested in making money? Most would sooner pocket say £70 from seven local idiots and sort any trouble after it's happened rather than keep them out and have a trouble free night for the people that really matter.
  8. I hope it's ok too
  9. you can always get another cat
  10. when you post Leave Us Alone can you post the flip too please. Many thanks
  11. danceable soul, hit the nail on the head Paul, I play more than a few mid-tempo numbers in my sets but they are dancers. Stompers and uptempo all night gives me a headache!!!! I said don't wanna hear plodders and lounge music some venues resort too, many so called crossover isn't danceable. What the point of playing records you can't dance too? It's not about the people sat around the venues edges, it's all about the dancers.
  12. sent you them all bar Harder They Fall. I used to have this on a 45 so it will be on a tape or cd somewhere which I can find later if I get the chance...sure someone will save me the trouble looking though
  13. it's all about introducing or reintroducing records to the scene that have long been forgotten or rarely played. There's 100's that had maybe three plays before getting dropped from playlists of DJ's, there's loads from different era's that different generations have missed out on, Stafford/80's plays for the Wigan generation who returned mid 90's on, Torch/Wigan etc records the 80's crowd missed out on, the records are there, some great cheap stuff thats never been played because... well it's cheap and it's not good street cred top play a cheap record is it but like I said some just too lazy to look and want ready made floor fillers everyone else plays rather than look for records that no one else is bothering with, trend followers rather than trend setters, or as others call 'em....Sheep I agree once it's had exposure it's no longer forgotten, can still be underplayed as it may only get aired every two months, but the DJ's continue to seek out records that are underplayed and so rotate your play box.
  14. Maybe there should be like ABTA for travel agents etc etc there should be one for Northern Soul. The National Association of Soul Promoters who joined this association would then be able to advertise as such on flyers and show some sort of kite mark too Promoters who join this assocition would also be able to accept a member from another soul club into their venue just as long as that soul club was was a member too.....just like working mens clubs All venues dates woiuld have to be ratified by the committee and all squabbles and disputes would be settled by an arbitration panel and their decision would be final
  15. Lifeline all-nighters do strike a balance without resorting to the played out same old same oldies you hear week in week out at the majority of venues...air few younger folk in as well. And it's true across the board as well not your Angie Stone's, Drizzabone, King Tutt etc that some consider across the board. The oldies the Dj's at Lifeline play are underplayed or forgotten with the od popular one thrown in but they are dance floor friendly and if you have a policy and stick to it from the opening set it can and does work and they will dance. Lifeline is testament to that with a full house, but as soon as you resort back to your played out same old same thats when your problems start. Load of b*ll*cks when promoters and Dj's say the records aren't out there, they are just plain lazy buggers to idle to look or just too afraid to stick their neck out and try something different.
  16. and it was better for it too IMHO. You said all your hello's and got all your ale at the soul night warm up. Midnight off you went to dance, buy and sell records etc etc..... Alcohol the root of all evil
  17. Maybe so but back in the good old days all-nighters was what it was all about, everything else secondary. Now the soul night scene is probably having a bigger say of what goes and who are the so called "top" djs. It was also a bit of a closed shop as to who DJ'ed at an all-nighter as well at one time.
  18. Cause at the end of the day Kenny mate, the venue owners make their money from the sale of alcohol, they say they want a bar and there is nothing promoters can do about it. The venue owners can at the end of the day get just as much money and probably more from a "normal" kind of night were all the folk go to get pissed and pull a bird/bloke, unlike the northern scene where the punters intake of alcohol is no where near as much. Take it from me venue owners already complain they don't take enough over the bar and Lifeline have approached many venues in the past only to be told not interested, can make more from a disco and send bar staff home in a taxi at a "reasonable" hour. All-nighters slowly becoming a thing of the past, not so much our ages but because there's no money (or not as much money) in it for the venue owners when NS is promoted. Like you said the all night bar is now attracting local piss heads looking for a late drink which in turn causes antagonism between the soulies and the "locals" due to drunken antics of the idiots. Memberships a great idea....bring 'em back.
  19. I said long time ago alcohol would be the downfall of the nighter scene as we knew it. It was much better when all you could get was a soft drink at the bar.
  20. there's a few reasons Beeker. Too many don't care for their own generation let alone the younger generation, they just want to carry on doing what they did in 1977 listening to the same music they did in 1977. Also kids don't want to be seen out with people old enopugh to be their parents and in more than a few cases grandparents The aforementioned venues you run and that others run of a similar nature are not what you would call Northern Soul. Many don't even want ot listen to "new" 60's northern soul let alone introduce contempory soul as you call it. I haven't seen playlists Beat Boutique and Shake and finger....but guess it's more mod orientated????? If owt like the mod doo's I've been to then it's not for the northern scene.

I had it in my head a red one on Soul, like I said probably imagining it on that label. I can remember listing it for Andy for £200 or £250 and it selling with no problem about 4/5 years ago.

the lame excuse of well we are after a different crowd so the clash won't matter always makes me laugh I said this in the too many chiefs topic that there are too many with self inflated opinions of themselves who care little for the bigger picture and only in what they are doing and f*ck anyone else UNTIL promoters start talking with each other and look at the bigger picture the scene will continue in the mess it's become. They should put the scene first and put aside any egos and petty arguments, then the scene will be healthier for it, musically and socially!!. As it is the soul night scene (and the all-nighter scene to a lesser extent) is alienating many, splitting the crowd, friends falling out over in essence f*ck all and in the end driving many away. The area that started this toipic, there was four or 5 venues within approximately 30 minutes of each other this weekend.....whats the point? Why not get together, talk and have two full venues spread over the weekend, one Friday and one Saturday....with no acrimonious arguemnts, splits or petty feuds going on in the background. It's simple really. If this was to mean a venue closing then so be it, the scene shouldn't be suffering like it is it should be prospering.
