got my copy through, was only £8.50ish from amazon, absolute bargain for a cracking cd. Haven't managed to read the (as usual) extensive booklet yet but will do soon. Any chance of all these booklets in one book Ady? Some great info in them. Keep up the excellent work

Karaoke nights have already been done on the scene, it was early 90's I think.

Anyway this is getting further and further away from the topic subject. Any one can dj with mp3s or CDs, there are even programs that will do it all for you so even less for the so called dj to do. If it is a serious soul night then it should be done properly.

I will say there are some good young dj's out there but I bet there isn't one who is playing someting that isn't already being played by a more experienced dj unless they have some one offs tucked away. I agree they are the future and their time will come but I cannot comprehend the arguement that because they are younger they will offer something that isn't already on offer by an older more experienced dj. If anyone can prove any different please post play lists and tell me what isn't being played anywhere else. The older dj's have a vast knowledge of records that they have heard over the years that they can fall back on, young uns simply don't have this, they will in time no doubt if they stick with it and they will take over in time. As I said earlier it is the promoters who have to start the change in outlook, the dj's with the music are already there waiting! I have heard some good young dj's, Callum bring one and I shall be hearing Aarron at Leeds at the end of the month.l

what a load of crap. So in their time Searling, Levine and Roberts didn't have an ear for the dancefloor? They are three of the best of their time. Butch and Andy Dyson, currently considered the top two don't dance either. Should they be discarded for a young un who has an ear for the dancefloor? Of course they shouldn't, there is no younger dj that can even begin to compete with these two and many more besides. Whether a dj can dance or not, or chooses not too in their old Age is totally irrelevant, as long as they deliver the goods, or in some cases what they have been asked by the promoter then that is all that matters. If not then they shouldn't be getting bookings.

The only other copies in this country I know of Andy Dyson had (mint too if I remember rightly), he played it out a few years ago (early Lifeline spin). Think he got a spare some years ago not sure where it went. Very rare record.

I've seen and heard many so called young uns and not many have anything left field or different to what is already on offer. Many are an image of their parents taste...they play oldies, but because they are young they are the best thing since sliced bread. Older or more experienced DJ's should not be discarded just because someone is 17 years old. They have the experience and the knowledge, it does help, and there are plenty of experienced DJ's out there who will play something different. The problem is with the promoters, many are frightened to go the little bit extra and program DJ's with something different to offer, mainly sticking by the safe tried and tested route!!

there is though an original 45 release of the Swans Nitty Gritty City. Back to your comment I don't know what source was used for the discs given to some DJ's some years ago. But for the sake of argument what if a track only exists on an acetate and the owner gives a few cuts to DJ's to give it exposure/get it out there so to speak. I know of several records that have been made into scene biggies this way, others taken form master tapes. It is practically impossible for one DJ to break a record these days unless the record is exceptional and the DJ in question gets a lot of bookings.

thing is Malc the kids don't know any different, most youngsters weren't born when cds were introduced and have never had the option of vinyl. The actual format has always changed/evolved over time.

At Ellie's 13th t'other week the kid...(well say kid he'd be in his early 20's) was djing from a laptop, virtual dj the program. Got talking to him mentioned I still dj'ed with vinyl...."too f*cking expensive that" was his reply

would a mid week event work now? Don't know about others but I know I can't make a mid week record fair. Said elsewhere a solely Northern Soul record Fair wouldn't work either, you would have to incorporate all Black Music. They still have large record fairs around the country as well.
